Have we heard anything about the teams?
Obviously Lucie & Nicole are definites if they are fit and available.
But who else do you think they should pick on the Czech team? Zakapalova? She lost 6-0 6-2 to Pironkova today:o but is the 3rd ranked Czech in singles at 61. Then maybe Benesova, she has dropped out of top 100 in singles but in doubles is 34.
Is Peshke available? She is the top Czech in doubles. Maybe they should go for Benesova and Peschke as the 3rd and 4th players to have a strong doubles team?
Or perhaps Nicole, Lucie, Zakapalova and Peschke with Peschke to partner Nicole in doubles?

New Fed Cup captain (Petr Pala) has made a line-up for Feb 2-3 matchup agst SVK in Brno:
1. Nicole Vaidisova
2. Lucie Safarova
3. Kveta Peschke
4. Petra Cetkovska
5. Iveta Benesova (alt)

My God! That captain obviously doesn't like much Barbora, Iveta and Petra K. :tape:

Lucie lost to Castano. I wouldn't be surprised to see her lose the two Singles. And it's not Petra or Kveta who will go on to beat Cibulkova or Hantuchova. :tape: Nicole must win he two aswell.

Slovaks will have the best Doubles team. Barbora or Iveta would' been a MUCH better choice.

:help:.

I think there are major problems with Kveta and Iveta - play played doubles against each other the other day and Iveta didnt even look at Kveta at the handshake.

Also Kveta only played 2 singles tournament last year both on clay and beat Nadia Petrova at the French Open :p

Well, obviously, you CAN'T have Kveta/Iveta as a team.
It's always nice to have a good player to support the top two.
Unfortunately, all Czech girls except Nicole are sucking big time at this moment.

I always tought Nicole, Lucie, Iveta, Barbora and Petra was a good team and would be the team for a few years.

Iveta was often described as the best Doubles player of all four players (she beat Thailand by herself or so).

It's just weird to put Petra C. when it's a super important tie. If Iveta is too mad at Kveta, take Barbora?

Lunaris
Jan 23rd, 2008, 03:12 AM
I too thought Barbora would be a better choice (to play with Nicole after they beat Raymond/Schiavone). Safarova might not play at all, so it's basically on Nicole's shoulders. Though it's possible Hantuchova won't play to rest a bit after Melbourne, that would suck for the spectators however. :(

I hope you're wrong. It's the only way left for them to get on the Olympic team. I heard Iveta say she really would love to go the Olympics...

Kveta is too strong in doubles to not give her a spot. I think Benesova is not the player who should be playing fedcup, she's so weak mentally. I remember the doubles tiebreak against France 2 years ago:sad: She was on such low confidence. What about Kveta/Barbora as doubles? Barbora is good in doubles too.

can't extract much info of substance, but it says Iveta won't go merely as a sparring partner, but a full-valued player and placement on court can change at the last minute. When you look at WTA ranking, Pala picks the players from highest to lowest/experienced. And Petra is numerically above Iveta...

Vaidisova and Peschke seal Czech win
The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Lubos Topolanek, was watching on site when the Czech tennis players celebrated their victory over the Slovak Republic in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II First Round tie in Brno.

Nicole Vaidisova recovered from a poor start to defeat Slovak Republic’s Dominika Cibulkova 36 63 61 and give the Czech Republic an expected 2-1 lead ahead of the second match on Sunday. World No. 207 Magdalena Rybarikova then overcame Petra Cetkovska 64 63 to level the tie.

In the end it all came down to the deciding doubles match. Czech captain Petr Pala changed the nominations, choosing Nicole Vaidisova rather than Iveta Benesova to partner Kveta Peschke.

Peschke, who was the best player in this match, and Vaidisova were playing together for only the second time ever, but they immediately produced some beautiful strokes and took the first set in just 22 minutes. However, Slovak hopes remained alive after they won the second set 62.

There were five breaks of serve in the third set with the final one at 4-4 for the Czechs. The Slovak team was only five points away from a win but it was Vaidisova who ended the tie with two aces and celebrated with all the people in Brno Exhibition Center.

"I want to play Olympic doubles tournament with Nicole now," Peschke said. "She was a very good doubles pupil today, we had a very good harmony," she added with a smile. Vaidisova said: "I was so nervous. And now I am so happy." Regarding the change in the Czech doubles nomination she remarked: "It was a team decision. Captain said that it will be the best solution."

The disappointed Slovak captain Mojmír Mihal said: “It´s the sport, it´s the tennis. I would like to congratulate all the girls, who compete on this tie. I am very proud on my team.”

Three-set thriller for Vaidisova

In the day’s first singles match Vaidisova played a three-set thriller against Dominika Cibulkova, which was reminiscent of their quarterfinal encounter in Bratislava last year. Vaidisova, however was aware that she was defeated in an exhibition match against Cibulkova in Chile two months ago. “But to play the Fed Cup tie is absolutely different than a exhibition where you enjoy the play with the people,” Cibulkova said.

World No.14 Vaidisova was full of confidence after Saturday´s win over Rybarikova. However, the hard-hitting Czech, who made some wonderful returns which were marred by horrible unforced errors, lost the first set 36 and had to do her best to regain her composure and fight back. “In the first set, Dominika let me nothing. But I calm down after that,” Vaidisova said.

Vaidisova immediately broke the Slovak player on her first service in the second set but Cibulkova did not panic and retrieved the break following some excellent attacks at the net. At 3-3, Vaidisova hustled her way to another break point that she converted to win the crucial seventh game. Helped by the non-stop cries of "Nicole, Nicole" from the thousands of Czech supporters, vaidisova proceeded to win the next eight games in a row.

"The people in the arena were super. I had a strong feeling that I am playing at home. I didn’t think that I am a team player but the crowd helped me," said Vaidisova.

There was no stopping the Czech No.1 after that, she raced through the final set in just 27 minutes, finishing the match with her 13th ace.
"My serve was a little bit frustrating," Cibulkova said of her 62 per cent first serve. "And Nicole served in the second and third set fantastic. This is the main reason of my defeat. I am very sad."

Vaidisova can pride herself on an impressive 11-1 Fed Cup singles record, putting her fourth best on the list of Czech players, behind three ‘titans’, Sukova, Mandlikova and Novotna.

An easy victory for Rybarikova

The second match of the day saw Czech No.2 Petra Cetkovska’s tendency to wobble at crucial points in the match. The world No.107 struck the first blow, breaking Rybarikova in the first game with confidence-boosting winners. But Rybarikova, a former Wimbledon junior singles finalist, came out strongly after that, breaking Cetkovska three times to win the first set 64.

This gave the Slovak No.2 enough confidence to keep her level of play above that of her higher ranked opponent and Rybarikova slowly wrestled control. Trailing 4-2, Cetkovska broke Rybarikova´s serve but another series of terrible unforced errors from the Czech player decided this rubber.

"I love this type of competitions. I am six-times more disappointed then after a defeat at the WTA Tournament," said Cetkovska, crying. "I wanted to be agressive to Rybarikova´s backhand, I wanted to go often to the net, but nothing worked." Rybarikova added: “It was very tough match and I was nervous. She played very good, but then I start to play stronger.”

The Czech players, who are in the World Group Play-off’s for a fourth successive time, having lost their previous play-off ties against Italy, France and Spain, now eagerly await the outcome of the draw.

“I want to be on the court for the next Fed Cup tie. And I wish we will play in Brno again. I was born here, it’s my city,” said Lucie Safarova, who withdrew from this match with a gluteal injury, but helped her team from the bench.

Iveta and Kveta will come tomorrow. Lucie said today that until now the conditions are excellent but she know that it will be very tough especially with the Israeli crowd and that she had tough matches against Shahar. However, they want to win and that they are in good spirit.

Shahar said that the fact that Nicole is not here will not make the mission easier because the rest of the Cezch team will play with more motivation. She said that Lucie is very danger on this surface and Iveta and Petra are in excellent form right now so it will be very tough, and she hopes that the crowd will push the Israeli team in the weekend.

Right now, it seems that the stadium will not be full because of the high prices and the lack of Nicole Vaidisova as she was the main attraction for this tie like Sharapova was in the 1/4 finals.

We'll be lucky to win one point...

Why do you say that?
Surely Petra and Lucie can beat Obziler. :o

Thanks for the photos, is it impossible for Iveta to smile or something?

Too bad this isn't televised, two of my very favorite players playing on the same day. :)

Iveta was kind of angry, she thought that she will play and right after the draw she run away and not waited for the other girls.

All the matches will be live in www.sport5.co.il

That's funny, she seems to be really full of herself.

She thought that after she reached the final in Estoril and was in good shape, the capitan would prefer she'd play over Kvitova, but he didn't so she was very mad.

Anyway, like Ithak posted the matches will be shown live in that site, I hope it works in all the countries (With Hebrew commentry :D probably :) ), you'll see in the front page a picture of Peer or something like that so click it :wavey:

Well, if I was Iveta I would have acted the same way to be honest. She has a winning strike of 13-2 on clay and hardcourt and is confronted with the same old bullshit like the tie before - a pure horror. In addition: she has to team up with Kveta who told her preference in doubles for Olympia is Nicole, the mess is perfect.

I don't know, Benesova will really probably play now with her run in Estoril.

See? You expected Iveta to play. 50K Title, 75K final, Tier IV final ; tha's a fine form.

Iveta missed Paris for nothing in April. She might ruin her clay season, when she is playing "shit hot tennis" because of that tie.

If she was a team player, she wouldn't have been so pissed off after not being chosen and been supportive of her teammate. Instead she acted extremely immaturely. You don't know what happened at practice, Petra might have kicked her butt in practice sets, who knows?

The bottom-line is that Petra was chosen and Iveta took the immature route in her reaction.

Petra def. Peer 2-6 6-3 6-0! Her forehand is g-o-o-d.
It was THE match to win. Go Lucie now!

Things are OK now, Iveta was smiling to Petra at the end. :D

Lucie. :weirdo:
At least Petra won, she must have really improved her forehand because every time I have seen her it has been her backhand that has done the damage. She really seems to be gaining confidence and ready to really go places in her career! Go Petra!

Hey guys :wavey:
As I promised here's the report.

First of all, I just want to say that Petra has a new fan- Me.
I was really happy when I heard she would play becuase I really wanted to see her play, and I really like her game (Just one thing, I think her movement and the volley need a little improvement)
So here it goes..
1st match- Kvitova def Peer 2:6 6:3 6:0
At the beginning (In the 1st set..), I think Petra was a little stressed.. She missed many returns (of Shahar's serve..) and few easy balls. Peer wansn't so ggod, but she put the ball in the court more than Petra so it gave her the set. The beginning of the 2nd was pretty match the same, but since 0-2 she really got in to it. She had a great winners, especially form the BH side (Which is really strong! I think she's the only lefty I saw which her BH is stronger than the FH) and some grat FH DTL.
After she she took the 2nd set you could tell she would win the match, she played brilliantly (Those BH returns  )and was agressive, it was realy fun watching her play (Not for Shahar thogh I guess..)
Peer on the other hand, did all the wrong things.. She was deffensive to much and should have moved Petra more, she also hit a lot to her BH side which is very strong and got winners time after time.
In the 3rd set Peer took medical time out at 1-0 but siriously, she wasn't injured, just tried to change momentum :o
I'm sorry that Peer lost (I think, after I saw Petra playing, that if it was a tour's match, I was rooting for Petra) because it's for my country. But after all I :hearts: Petra.. She's awsome!
BTW, what she says when she pumps her self up? It's sounds like "Hoit!" but I have no idea what she says..
I also think her mental side is very good (I mean.. She didn't choke for a second ;) )
Oh and last thing.. The crowd was DEAD in this match, from the start to finish..In Tzipi's match on the other hand..(Maybe becuase Tzipi is more loved, she's cool, and Shahr talks to muh comparing to what she does on court..)
2nd match: Obziler def Safarova 6:0 3:6 6:4
Drama drama what a match!
I notice that many posters on GM wrote how pathetic it was from Lucie, I guess because she was the favorite and Obziler is not a great player.. But they're wrong! I agree, it wasn't an awsome and great much, but it very good and kind of dramatic.
The seven first games went to Tzipi... Lucie wasn't playing very well, and Tzipi was. She was veryy solid and had few aces and really nice winners.
After that, Lucie held serve (Easily as far as I rememmber)and she started to look better, play better, moving Tzipi more, using her cross court FH very nicely. In that set she broke twice to take it 6:3, she played very well and had few great returns from the BH side (DTL)
In the 3rd set, Lucie served first, but Tzipi, like it or not, played a briliant game to break to 1-0 and to hold after saving BP to 2-0.
Since then, the match went with serves.
Lucie and Tzipi held and it was 3-1*. That game was very tense and long.
Tzipi had few break points to 4-1 and a double break lead but Lucie saved them time after time with FH winners and great first serves (Althgouh the one in the last point of the game was clearly out..)
The point I'll rememmber most from that match was in that 3-1 game.. Lucie's ball hit the net and passed, it was pretty short but Tzipi managed to some how reach and pass it over the net, to Lucie's BH Lucie hit a BH DTL which I thought would be a winner since it was strong and accurate, but Tzipi somehow reached it and made a CC touch uot of it :worship: The crowd went nuts! (Infact, the crowd in that match was very good, cheered much more!)
So after Lucie held to 2-3* I thought Tzipi would be broken because of all the missed chances to tae the double break lead... But she hadn't and held easily. Since then, they both held easily exept in 3-5 when Lucie's served and faced a match point but she saved it and took the game, after that, Tzipi held to love.
*I think Lucie missed to many returns
*The stadium was half full, but it was the "good crowd"- Not those who came to see Sharapova in February, those who really love tennis came :)
*Oh and last thing, I don't know how many of you saw Tzipi plays.. She has a solid baseline games, and a good BH slice, her net play is very good too, and her movment is very good too, considering she's 35..
If she wasn't 35 she would ranked much higher

Pics and vids to come!

I hope Pala places Lucie agst Peer tomorow, despite her sad srore today. If not, he's risking burning out Iveta or Kveta in singles before their decider dblz match...:tape:

What a magnificient week-end!
Petra defeated Peer in her first Singles match.
Iveta scored her first Singles win since 2002.
Kveta/Iveta reunited again, successfull, Kveta showed who's the best Doubles player.

With Petra coming up, Iveta controlling her nerves and Kveta who is the Doubles force, things are looking good! With Nicole and Lucie, when they'll find their game again, it's going to be fun to watch!

See you next year in World Group! :hearts:

Nice work, girls. Not many expected the CZE team getting ISR to their knees at home, not without Nicole. With Lucie not beleiving and Tzipi in form, it looked bleak for the Czechs after day one. Then came Iveta and played a dream of a match, followed by another one with Kveta on her side. Way to go Czechs! Congratulations to a well-deserved victory.

Next possible opponents for the CZE girls are: China, France, Argentina, Italy, Russia, Spain, or USA. FRA, ITA and ESP they played in recent years. Argentina may be the best wish to come true .

The best team for Peking would be Vladka Uhlirova and Kveta!
Just take a look at the rankings;)
Furthermore their styles would combine perfectly!!!
Vladka is a classic serve-and-volley-player with amazing reactionj at the net and Kveta has a lot of pow from the baseline:lick:

Plus, Kveta has amazing reactions at the net, too. :)
