Vow of Eternal Fanship

I hereby induct Lucie Šafářová into my Eternal Fanship.

From now on, and until the end of her career (or my life), I will follow her with the same level of dedication as the ten players of whom I'm already an Eternal Fan, to the maximum extent that my personal circumstances and available resources will allow.

This vow is permanent and irrevocable, and I seal it with my Word of Honour.

[Word of Honour: a promise that cannot be broken without disgrace]

My Eternal Fanship

1. Monica Seles
2. Maria Sharapova
3. Daniela Hantuchová
4. Jelena Dokić
5. Iva Majoli (retired)
6. Karina Habšudová (retired)
7. Vera Zvonarëva
8. Nicole Vaidišová
9. Anna Chakvetadze
10. Iroda Tulyaganova
11. Lucie Šafářová

My Website

I have just opened the Lucie Šafářová section of my personal website:

http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/safar/

Still under construction, it features:

* My Lucie Šafářová Biography: This already consists of a detailed appreciation of Lucie's tennis-qualities (and other attributes), and will be followed by a tournament-by-tournament review of each year. I will add reviews of previous years later in 2008, the review of 2008 at the end of 2008, and thereafter update it only at the end of each subsequent calendar-year.

* My Match-Reports: a point-by-point description of Lucie-matches that I've seen on TV. The only match there so far is her fourth round of the Australian Open 2007, in which she upset defending champion Amélie Mauresmo. Soon I will add her quarter-final against Nicole Vaidišová, and in February, I'll go back and add the French Open and Wimbledon 2007.

* External links: every Lucie-related web-page I know (and that I think is appropriate to include in a PG-rated website such as mine).

Coming soon:

* Matchography: the result of every match Lucie has played that counts towards the WTA Singles Rankings. I'll try to update it within 24 hours of each such match, although matches prior to 2008 will be added later in the year, when I'm not so busy.

Match-Reports

During the Australian Open, French Open, Birmingham, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, and the Olympics, I will follow these tournaments with full-time dedication, posting round-by-round reports to this forum whether I've seen the matches or merely followed them on the Internet.

Since I'm working full time now, I will follow other tournaments privately, without posting reports. This even includes the US Open, which is not televised on any channels to which I have access, and is therefore not worth demanding two weeks' extra leave for - especially since the USTA have forbidden the distribution of videos from the US Open since 2007.

I wish Lucie and all her fans a happy new year.

Yes: I am still working on last year's Australian Open! Like SPECTRE, I always deliver what I promise.

I have added a new TV-report of Lucie's quarter-final with Nicole Vaidišová, which I recently acquired from Tennis Videos International (http://www.users.bigpond.com/tennisvideos1/).

It was a mouthwatering match of brilliant tennis from both players, despite the easy-looking score.

My report is at:

ROLAND GARROS (Paris, France; red clay; Grand Slam)
============= http://2007.rolandgarros.com/

I have uploaded to my website my reports of Lucie's third- and fourth-round matches at the French Open 2007:
http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/safar/french_open2007.html

The third round is a TV-report, the fourth round sadly just a scoreboard-report.

Although this is the first time I have revealed these reports to the Lucie Šafářová community, some of you may have read them already at the jeldani (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jeldani/) or sharapova_vaidisova_hantuchova (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sharapova_vaidisova_hantuchova/) Yahoo! Groups, or at the French Open 2007 WTAworld forum (http://www.wtaworld.com/archive/index.php/t-300336.html). The changes are as follows:
+ added Statistics for both matches;
+ edited my third-round TV-report in a few places;
+ done proper transcripts of the interviews she gave just before and just after that delicious upset of Amélie Mauresmo!

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS (Wimbledon, England; grass; Grand Slam)
================= http://championships.wimbledon.org/

LUCIE ŠAFÁŘOVÁ [25]:
1r + Zuzana Ondrášková, 7-5 6-2
2r + Eleni Daniilidou, 6-4 3-6 6-3
3r - JELENA JANKOVIĆ [3], 7-5 6-7 (4/7) 2-6

Jelena Janković: "It was a big battle out there. She was swinging at the ball, making some unbelievable shots. At some points I was thinking, 'My God, is there any way out?'"

Third round (Friday 29th June 2007)
-----------

- LUCIE ŠAFÁŘOVÁ [25,DF] lt. JELENA JANKOVIĆ [3], 7-5 6-7 (4/7) 2-6

This was easily the best match of the first week of Wimbledon 2007: full of lung-busting rallies; Lucie's flairsome power, amazing gets, and many winners, went a long way towards inducting her into my Eternal Fanship in January 2008.

Groups, or at the Wimbledon 2007 WTAworld forum (http://www.wtaworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=950). This version features minor edits to the point-descriptions (including the missing point at 1-1 in the first set, where Lucie hit a backhand drive-volley winner), and the addition of Statistics and four more articles.

I have also written brief reviews of Lucie's first- and second-round matches.

My Lucie-reports - including a point-by-point description of her third-round match - are at:

Second round (Wednesday 27th/Thursday 28th June 2007)
------------

+ LUCIE ŠAFÁŘOVÁ [25,DF*] d. Eleni Daniilidou, 6-4 3-6 6-3
* I was a demi-fan of Lucie at the time; now I am an Eternal Fan.

I found a couple of points from Lucie's second-round match on my Today at Wimbledon videos, and have updated my match-report accordingly:

The additions:
>>>
I saw the match-point on Today at Wimbledon: Lucie served out wide; Daniilidou hit a short forehand return; Lucie hit a crosscourt backhand winner just inside the sideline, pumped her fist and smiled.

Friday's Today at Wimbledon showed another point from this match: Daniilidou hit a crosscourt forehand winner back behind Lucie, who tried to turn but slipped over, did the splits, and then rolled onto her back, clutching her right knee with both hands, her face screwed up in agony. Then she was sitting on her chair, rubbing her knee with a pack of ice, and in tears while a trainer wrapped brown tape around her knee.
