View Full Version : Rankings and Draws for US Open

This is what someone said from www.venusserenafans.com

I called the WTA office last week and I was told that Lindsay's protected ranking is #3. She will be able to use that ranking status for her first 8 tournaments back. Consequently, she is expected to be seeded #3 at the US Open. Any tournament she plays in where the #1 and #2(Serena and Venus) players are not, then Lindsay will be the top seed. If one of either #1 and #2 is not present in a tournament she plays, then she will be the second seed above Capriati and Seles.

This means that Lindsay will most likely be seeded number 3 at the US Open. I also called them just to make sure and understand after reading this. They told me the only way Linday can get seeded number 2 or even number 1 is for 2 reasons.

She is seeded number 2 if 1 sister withdraws.
She is seeded number 1 if they both happen to get out of the tournie. (not likely)
She is number 3 if they are both in the tournie.

So after thinking, this is great news for davenport, but when the news breaks out to Capriati that she is most likey going to get either the number 4 or 5 seed (depending on how her and monica do during the hardcourt season) her draw is really going to be messed up. The number 4 and 5 seed always get tough opponets in the RD 32's and quarters. Monica last year I believe lost early round, and she was seeded like 4 or 5. But really this is to straighten everything up, that yes the sisters will be on opposite sides of the draw, and the All Williams Final is still in tact. Best of luck to lindsay's return, and the continue domincance of the williams from the clay and grass back to their favorite, the hardcourts!

Well there was never any doubt that Venus and Serena would be seeded #1 and #2. It would be outrageous NOT to. But thanks for the info and explains a lot about Lindsay's seeding in Stanford.

If Jenn is seeded #5 she's going to explode :o Imagine if she draws Venus or Serena in the QF :o

I hope Monica gets the #4 seed.

yes Sam L, that is what Im saying. She would have a fit. But I don't know if she will draw them in the Quarters, Serena drew Lindsay last year but she was seeded number 10. But if it happend. Just imagine. She knows she would loose, and then she would be thinking about her ranking, and just watch it plumit down and down and down. Man would she be pissed. But also thinking, when Hingis comes back, what is stopping her from getting a protected rank? Oh it must be b/c she hasn't been out for the allowed time. But damn. She probably would get number 3 or 4 along with Lindsay, and cappy could end up 5 or 6. Man just thinkin about it makes me crack up.

I think that good news for Venus and Serena, but I'm sure it will piss Monica and Jennifer off. Monica and Jennifer are in a neck and neck horse race for number 3 currently with Jennifer ahead by 41 points. Plus Monica has a butt load of points to defend this summer. Jennifer has 481 points to defend this summer (Toronto-F; New Haven-SF; San Diego -QF) and Monica has 867 points to defend (SD-F;LA-F;Toronto -SF). I don't think Monica will over take Jennifer and will be ranked at #4, thus if Lindsay is given the #3 seed with a protected rank, Monica is pushed back to #5. My early hunch is that Lindsay will not be in top form to make it to the semifinals let alone finals and will get upset early, I see Jennifer making it to the semifinals before losing to Venus and Monica bowing out at her usual stage of the QF's. Martina H. is an unknown factor. I don't see being out for a number of months really affecting her game (NOTE: see Hingis's performance from first two months of this year, after coming back from an injury), but it will be interesting to see if she has made any improvements to her game to where she is really competitive with Venus, Serena or Lindsay. This should be interesting.

I say if Martina plays the Open, the top five seeds should be:

1. Serena
2. Venus
3. Martina or Lindsay
4. Lindsay or Martina
5. Jen or Monica

Martina wouldn't be eligible for a special ranking if she comes back for the US Open, she wasn't out long enough.

Jul 23rd, 2002, 04:18 PM
I don't think Monica will over take Jennifer, but I do believe Jen will be pissed about being seeded number 4. Hopefully this will spur her on. I think Lindsay deserves a protected ranking. I hope she takes full advantage of it. She looks to be in the best shape of her life from the recent photo's I have seen.

I always thought that the protected special ranking applied to ranking to enter tournaments. If it applies to seeding., why didnt Mary and Anna use their protected ranking to get seeded in some of their earlier tournaments?

Jul 23rd, 2002, 04:26 PM
It makes no difference being seeded 3 or 4. Being seeded 5 on the other hand...

Jul 23rd, 2002, 04:29 PM
anna was not out for 6 months because she played in san diego in betwen
In Pierce's case, I still don't understand why she didn't get seeded. wasn't she in the top 5 when she got injured?

If Lindsay is being given a special seeding dispensation, the fair thing to do would be to slot the displaced player in her section. In the US Open example, whoever gets bumped to #5 should get placed in Lindsay's quarter automatically. If Lindsay reaches the quarters and defeats #5, she will have justified her seeding. If she loses early, it will actually make things easier on #5, as her draw will open up.

The only gripe the #5 would then have is if she has to go 3 tough sets to beat Lindsay in the quarters, and is worn down for her semi. But then, without a special seeding, she could have drawn Lindsay in the the 4th round.

They say be careful what you wish for  Not that Jen publicly longed for Lindsay's return, but her past statements concerning the Williames rankings and results sure implied a whole lot... Anyway, it looks like she will be the player whose seeding will most likely be affected after all :o

Infiniti - Actually, if this quote is accurate info"...Jennifer has 481 points to defend this summer (Toronto-F; New Haven-SF; San Diego -QF) and Monica has 867 points to defend (SD-F;LA-F;Toronto -SF)."

Then it's Monica who'll almost definitely be pushed down to #5. She has to make up almost 400 points on Jenn in only four tournaments. Wait. The seeds come out BEFORE New Haven. So Jenn isn't defending New Haven points for US Open seeding purposes. That kind of casts the top four seeds in stone, barring injury.

1 Serena
2 Venus
3 Lindsay
4 Jenn

Rankings and Draws for US Open

I cannot speak on the rankings but every player should wear a pair of draws. ;)

NOTE: Jennifer is not playing New Haven this year, but has added Los Angeles to her schedule.

Jul 23rd, 2002, 09:54 PM
I dont think anyone can be upset at being seeded lower because is Lindsay had not got injured they would never have got that high!

Well, its good that Lindsay is seeded 3rd behind Venus and Serena. I love it this way! :D

Jul 24th, 2002, 01:10 PM
Oh and the reason that Mary Pierce, nor Anna K didn't get a protected rank is b/c they didn't ask for one. They went straight into playing their first tournie back from injury. So that is why. Linday played the pieces right. She waited. Knew she could get a protected rank, so there was no rush. I think Mary really would've done better if she knew this and took advantage!

Jul 24th, 2002, 02:21 PM
I agree with infiniti2001

I do find it a bit ironic that Jen has implied that things would have been different with Hingis and Lindsay in the mix. That probably has some truth to it. but things ARE going to be different when they return - in that Capriati will sure to be bumped down by Lindsay in tournament seedings for the next few tournaments. If she had taken care of business while they were out, instead of griping about the Williams sisters plotting their ascension to #1, then she wouldn't be in this situation.

Jul 24th, 2002, 03:10 PM
I thought Mary was seeded for 1 tournament when she came back last year but then she reinjured herself.

Jul 24th, 2002, 03:23 PM
yeah she was seeded, but i wasn't her old seed when she first got injured and had to take time out. basically when she entered her first tournie back, her ranking had not fallen to where it is now. She might have been between 8-15?
