Who do you respect even when you don't agree?

It's easy to like/respect those we agree with, but I'm curious to known who we can disagree/debate with but still admire:)

Frankly speaking, i respect basically ALL PEOPLE and, particularly, ALL OPINIONS.

Easier for me to say who i don't respect:

1. Those who don't discuss, they just state and stare

2. Those who use insults to boost their argument

Maybe the only person I respect even when we disagree is Volcana. Even when his/her(clarify please?) opinions differ from others, Volcana never insults a player and rarely a poster unless they deserve it.

VIVASELES

For the same reason as Ryan15

he/she is one of the most nicest people on this board. imho

Similar to Way.

I respect anyone that doesn't resort to personal attacks on other posters. I respect people that don't stereotype all fans of a particular player by the actions of the most negative examples.

fans from who I can see that they love their fav because they spend time rooting for her/him, instead of bashing and insulting the rivals all the time!

I really respect all of these posters even though the same isn't shown, everyone is giving their opinion on different subjects, really when you think abou it, you may want to make a point, or tell them what you think of their opinon and what they say, everyone on this board, either conisdered's the thread as a "hate thread" or a "good thread". which really there is only 1. Everyone posts "good threads". But in another person's opinoin, they might not like it.

Oh, I dunno. It depends on the situation.

But Ryan15, I have to disagree with you about Volcana. I used to actually think he was slightly impartial, but he/she has been going on a psychotic rampage the past few weeks regarding his favorite.

My respect goes to posters who have an independent mind, who can generate their own ideas, who can step over their sympathies to their fave and critisize her as if she is not a fave of yours, to those who can be against stupidity, rudeness, arrogance coming from the fans of your group. You know what I mean..

LOL, ys, I can only count a handful of posters on the board who "live up" to those standards. o0O0o, I still respect Volcana, everyone goes crazy at some point or another.

I respect posters who really try and view the tennis world as impartially as possible. meaning, they recognize their bias as a fan of a particular player(s) and try and have an opinion on an issue that is not solely based on the relationship of the issue at hand with their fave. In the same way, its irritating when posters view a situation negatively, when you can tell its more about their dislike of the player rather than the situation itself.

Not really, most of European posters are like that. You won't see them much of talking crap, repeating stupid stereotypes after some less-than-genious announcers, calling names, overusing profanities, gloating over fans of beaten opponents, and never get personal. Quite a few of Canadian posters also fit that description. And from other countries too.

I'd like to think that I respect everyone's opinion all the time, but to be honest I don't respect someone's opinion if I don't understand/respect the reasons they give for their opinions. So if someone just says "I hate X player" without any reason at all, I find it hard to respect them. And similarly if they say "I hate X player/poster because he/she is black/white/blonde/fat" I find it difficult to respect them.

I respect my mom, and family and friends. Even though we may agree I still love and respect them all. I love people who aren't afraid to speak their minds. Basically what Saki,RAA and Brian Stewart wrote.

I respect myself; although most of the time my head is convulsed with disagreement and confusion b/n different parties, at the end of the day they all seem to work for the same purpose - for me ;)

Everyone else on this board is just a character on the screen - atleast for me.

All groups have disrepectful and rude posters.

I try to respect everyone and their opinion.

I have some fav posters (from all different groups) but if I named names, they may get the big head;) ;) ;) know what I mean.

Now you're stereotyping ys ;)

you're saying that all European posters are good and implying that American ones are argumentative, I'd like to think that's not true

Hulet
Jul 23rd, 2002, 09:57 PM
but, how could you forget, ptkten? didn't you hear "stereotyping" is an "independent" thinking and, as such, to be applauded and "respected"? ;)

I respect

Rollo

Brian Stewart

TheBoiledEgg (except for one instance)

Fingon

Those are my main 4...I do respect many people's opinions, but these 4 stand out in my mind.

Everyone else keeps saying "what" they respect, bt not many are naming names.

I want names! ;)

Also....who could forget TraTree - the best poster here.

She doesn't post often, but is the classiest person I know of to ever meet on the internet :D

you're saying that all European posters are good

My English must have let me down. I didn't know that in American English "most of" and "all" are synonyms..

implying that American ones are argumentative

Did I use the "American" word in my post? even more

Well I respect ys because he is brutally honest about absolutely everything, and very well educated - or at least sounds like it!

Many other people, too many to name.

Most people for that matter- theo nly people I dont respect are those who gave me reason not to.

If I take time out to write a serious post and disagree with someone on this board it usually means that I respect them, because if I didn't believe me I wouldn't bother.

Those people don't lose my respect because they don't agree with me - I just hate them forever :p ;).

Seriously though, everyone on this board starts off with some respect from me which they either build on or erode. Not necessarily by what they post, more the way they post it.

I have respect for everybody on the board minus a handful of posters who I will not name although I suspect some of them know who they are*cough* ;) The posters that I don't have respect for are mainly the ones that hate for no good reason at all.

There are a great number of posters I respect...and only a handful I don't. Agreement or disagreement (on any given subject) isn't a criteria for which group a poster falls in for me...it's the manner in which they go about it.

Which, I must admit, would probably leave me off a few lists. :o

Oh well, nobody's perfect. ;)

In terms of this board, I respect those that are truthful with their opinions especially if it's one that might be deemed "unpopular". No smokescreen, no innuendo, no apprehension, no insults disguised in hyperbole. Of course, tact is essential (and I'll be the first to admit I'm not always tactful) but so is candor.

Rollo you asked:

Who do you respect even when you don't agree?

Although I may not always agree with them, I do appreciate the efforts of...

Okay, i can see people around here want to be politically correct.

I respect Brian Stewart, because he has very insightful opinions, he has a very good knowlege of the history of tennis (WTA) and its players, but most of all he does not bash other players. He can criticize witout bashing.
I respect RAA, Bright Red, Mark35, Snuffkin, Vivalaseles, Volcano, Althea, Gumbyycat, Infiniti,Fingon, Disposable Hero, Kart, Josh, Griffin, VW43, Dawn Marie, Freethinker and quite a few other intelligent posters, whom i shall write their names later.
These posters belong to different fan bases, yet they somehow convey their opinions or criticisms across intelligently without excessive and unneccessary bashing

The posters i dont respect are those who get blinded by hatred, that they are unable to communicate intelligently and objectively and there are quite a few of them here.

I first try to understand posters, their make-up, their angle, the kind of personality that predisposes them to view and express things the way they do. As a result, I accept posters for what they are. After all, people here come from all corners of the world and it's amazing to (re-) discover the common thread that links us all humans, whether we be Chinese, Australian, African, European or North/South American. It's like an Earth family having a spontaneous conversation.

Along this line, I have all but respect for most of you. This, after all, is why I can justify taking the time to post here rather than doing something more useful elsewhere.

That said, I don't appreciate those who lose self-control and self-respect. When they stop respecting themselves, they hardly can extend respect to others.

My esteem for some posters also takes a dive when they resort to kindergarten statements like: you're creazy, you're dumb, you're a moron, that's stupid, that's bovine faeces (!), ... These statements are too easy and do not require or reflect mature thinking. Small kids use them all the time, and nobody comes here to re-experience the kindergarten atmosphere (at least I hope not).

I should close by saying that I also appreciate posters who make an effort to polish their writings and writing style. It shows respect to others. The English used may not need to be perfect as the whole world is far from being one English tribe, but it does matter to show care and attention as you're going to be read worldwide.
