Seeing as the 2008 Australian Open Series is drawing closer, I thought it was time to start a thread for January.

Here's hoping Alicia can do even better than last January and really start to push back up towards the top 30 by the end of 2008.

She has a lot of points to defend in the first quarter of the new year, so good luck to her...I hope she can do herself proud :)

Events Alicia will be playing this Aussie summer:
-Hopman Cup
-Sydney (qualies to begin with)
-Australian Open

How do you think she will go in these events? Discuss :)

All I want for the Hopman Cup is for the Aussie team not to half to pull out because of injury... so over that!!!

Sydney I would love to see Alicia win one or two rounds - push a top girl maybe.

AO... 4th round:) obviously provided with a decent draw

Hopman Cup- Ditto above, I'm so sick of injuries! I hope the Aus team can stay fit and injury free and really push the other teams.
Sydney - Just get some good form, I couldnt even guess the round, as long as she wins her first match.
Aus Open - equalling her best or more would be nice! But even 3rd round and perhaps if she faces a higher rank, she really tests them. It all depends on the draw really!

Ben.
Dec 20th, 2007, 12:35 PM
I reckon that she will win at least one singles match at the HC,
In Sydney, shell go through the qualies & make the second round in the main draw,
Then at the AO she'll at least reach the second round or better provided she has a good draw :)

its annoying that alicia didnt draw either dulko or hsieh as they would be quite easy compared to serena, sania and lucie.

i think she will beat the latter two though, she always plays so well in melb!

I think she can go 2-1 at Hopman but agree with Sydney, and unless she gets a REALLY kind draw at the Open, 3rd Rd it is

Hopman Cup has always been a happy hunting ground. Who knows she could do a 2003 and just come from the clouds and have a great tournament. You never know with Sydney its always unpredictable with overseas players ans the heat and If she is really on her game a 3rd or even 4th round is not out of the question.

2-2 at hopman cup. To beat Sania and Lucie. Luzack to beat Fish and Australia to win the doubles to make the final where they lose 3-0 to serbia!!! But in saying that if Serena dosent get up for it then it could go 3-1. Still big question mark on her.

Sydney, Rnd 2
Aussie Rnd 3-4 depending on draw.

article from the age

HAVING recently signed a one-year contract to coach Alicia Molik, former Australian No. 1 and French Open semi-finalist Nicole Bradtke believes a top-20 return for Molik can be achieved before the agreement expires.
Molik, the one-time No. 8 who has rebuilt her ranking to 56th after a long period sidelined with vestibular neuronitis, opened the new season with a straight-sets win over world No. 23 Lucie Safarova on the opening night of the Hopman Cup. There were no ranking points at stake and her opponent had arrived from the European winter, but the signs were encouraging.
Not least of all for Bradtke, who received a phone call from her long-time friend early last month asking if she was available to help. The timing was ideal, with Bradtke working only part-time with the Fed Cup team and National High Performance Academy. The recent retirement from basketball of her husband, Mark, would also help with the care of the couple's two young sons during the minimum 15 weeks Bradtke intends to spend on the road with Molik in 2008.
Daily practice sessions, mostly at Albert Reserve, were supplemented by a continuing off-court program with the academy — and former Melbourne Tigers' — trainer Simon Carney. More than 11 years Molik's senior, Bradtke has slipped into an informal mothering role, while emphasising a simple back-to-basics tennis approach. "It's no Einstein stuff, no magic cure," she said with a laugh.
"Alicia wasn't one of these players who burst on to the scene; she actually worked her way up and I think it was just unfortunate that she got the inner-ear infection and it was just an awful time for her, so now she's actually got to take those same steps again.
"I don't think in her mind that she should probably be looking at, 'oh, I'm going to get back into the top 10'. I think you've got to have these small steps first, for her, because you just don't know when it's going to happen. It might happen, and we hope it happens, but it may not happen, so she's doing everything that she possibly can to put herself in that right position.
"A lot of the time this year she was mis-hitting a lot of balls, her timing was all off; she only mis-hit one ball last night, which was great, and she served really, really well and her timing was pretty good, so the signs are there. Just to have your first win on the board does your confidence the world of good. Any win's a good win."
Bradtke has been helping develop a more potent Graf-like backhand slice and encouraging an aggressive approach to the mid-court balls generated by Molik's exceptional serve. Her kicker gripped well on the new blue Plexicushion on Saturday night and the 26-year-old then partnered Peter Luczak in the mixed doubles against Safarova and Tomas Berdych to seal Australia's 2-1 defeat of the highly rated Czechs.
Molik spoke later of the confidence she had gained from a productive end to the season and the clarity of her new on-court approach. "I think I'm a lot better at not confusing myself out there. Simple game plans; big serves, big kicks, jump on the forehand, that's about it. Follow the ball to the net. It's very simple," she said.
Indeed, much has changed from 12 months ago, when Molik was still ranked outside the top 150. She had just won her wildcard into the Australian Open through the pre-Christmas play-off and needed to strategically use her limited number of injury-protected tournament entries to rebuild a career she had feared was over.
"The first three months of this year were just terrible for her and she ended up not doing so well, and I think it really wrecked her confidence for the rest of the year," Bradtke said.
"But then the last block that she played when she went to Europe she won more matches there than I think she'd done all year, so she came back pretty grooved, had a bit of a purpose, had a bit of time off, had a bit of a think about what she wanted to do. I'd like to see her in the top 20 by the end of the year. I think that's a very achievable goal for her and anything beyond that is an absolute bonus."

Ben.
Dec 31st, 2007, 08:37 PM

I shall do a results tracker for the month
So this is how it stands:

HOPMAN CUP - Exhibition, Alicia was ranked #56
RR1 - d. Lucie Safarova (#23) 7-5 6-2
RR2 - l. Sania Mirza (#31) 6-2 2-6 6-4
RR3 - l. Serena Williams (#7) 6-2 7-6(7)

1-2 W/L record, not bad.

She needs to work on her serve a bit more, and her backhand is letting her down, well theres a few things haah. But if she brings in some form from her first match, and her second set against Serena she might have some success.

Rejuvenated Molik ready to hit heights again
Friday January 4, 6:36 PM

PERTH, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Australia's Alicia Molik, who reached the top 10 in 2005 before illness put her out of the game for six months, believes she is ready to continue her climb back up the world rankings.
Three years ago, Molik reached a career-high eighth in the world only to suffer an inner ear infection which affected her balance and vision, destroyed her confidence and dropped her out of the world's top 500.

But 18 months after she first returned to the tour, the 26-year-old is back up to 56th in the rankings and targeting a good run at this month's Australian Open, where she reached a grand-slam best quarter-final in 2005. ADVERTISEMENT

"I've been playing tennis for a year and a half since I was injured," Molik said. "So I'm not making a comeback, I'm playing tennis. My results are my results and they are what they are.

"I am feeling a little more confident, a bit more ready to go than I was last year and ready to test myself against the better players."

Molik acquitted herself well representing her country at the Hopman Cup, winning one match and pushing former world number one and Australian Open champion Serena Williams hard in another.

"It's been a reasonably positive week," Molik said after her 6-2 7-6 defeat by the American. "I was pleased that I finished on a slightly stronger note against Serena.

"I was pleased with the way I recovered after the first set and managed to push her right the way through."

Molik plays in Sydney next week, a tournament she won on her last visit in 2005, before the Australian Open begins in Melbourne on Jan. 14.

"I am looking forward to playing in Sydney, the last time I was there I took away the trophy," she said. "I like the city and the stadium so hopefully I'll have a good week."

Yeah I know...they should just show the whole coverage of one tennis the medibank international rather than show two events etc. its ridiculous.

They should the GC final and Adeliade semis/final, the problem is the times they schudled it. Today the womens match started 12.30 melbourne time while the first men's amtch started at 1.30 melbourne, surely there's a good chance that it's going to go longer than one hour, start it at 12 or 11.30 at least. And tomorrow with the 12pm start, they only give 1 and a half hours to show two aussies, if they started at 11 like normal we would see all of alicia's match and probably some of pratty.
