Since I couldn't find the old thread via search, I decided to restart it. See if you can guess which WTA player this is. (Rollo and Way will have to sit out a turn, as I may have told them. :))

I played in the late 70's and early 80's.

Despite my short stature, I hit what was (at the time) the second fastest serve ever for a woman; several MPH faster than the likes of Navratilova and Wade.

When I first went to college, I played on the varsity men's team.

Despite never winning a big title, I achieved a couple of firsts.

My nickname is "Pearl".

hey, brian, i know why you said you told me but you haven't "actually" told me.
So what's your offer to avoid me spoil this turn?

The one who said "Renee Richards" got half the answer right!

Jul 23rd, 2002, 02:56 AM
Richard Raskind.

Jul 23rd, 2002, 09:21 AM
if you DO know the answer, why don't you give it, Zummi?

Not too obvious, eh Zummi? :)

Not so subtle hint to Zummi's clue: it wasn't Vincent Richards. :)

Another hint: she was righthanded, with a one-handed backhand.

I never know these....
but I'm dying to find out!
who was it????????????!!!

No more guesses? If Way or Zummi wants to answer, go ahead. :)

Jul 23rd, 2002, 08:37 PM
Renee Blount :)

Despite being only 5'4", Renee managed to hit triple digits on her serve-- with a wooden racquet!

She was the first African-American to win a tournament in the Open era, and the first Af-Am to be seeded at a slam in the Open era.

She played on the Men's Varsity tennis team at the Hampton Institute. She quit tennis briefly, but returned at the encouragement of her family, and accepted a scholarship to UCLA.

Here's another to mull over:

I played most of my career in the 1980's.

I was born in Switzerland, but spent most of my childhood in Peru, winning their national championship at the age of 13.

I then moved to the US, but played Fed Cup for Germany.

I was one of the "glamour girls" of the tour.

I won my second career singles title the year after giving birth to my first child.

I have 8 siblings.

I have represented my country in international team competition.

I was also a talented horsewoman.

I reached the highest ranking of any Phillipino player in WTA history.

Is it Diane (I remember she spelt it a funny way - Dian or Dyan or something...) Castillejo? Or one of her sisters ;)

Marita Redondo? :o

Damn, you're good, Linnie!

Okay, try this one:

I have a college degree in Phys. Ed.

I got financial help from a heavyweight boxing champ early in my career.

I also played other sports.

My name is not Althea Gibson.

Ahhh.....this one's a toughie! Anyone else venture a guess?? ;)

Aug 7th, 2002, 03:32 AM
I totally forgot about this topic!

A guess...who is Andrea Buchanan?

P.S. technically-speaking, Marita Redondo was a U.S. citizen, wasn't she? :)

Brian Stewart

Not Buchanon. And yes, Marita was a US citizen. But had I said "of Phillipine heritage", that would have given away too much. (Turned out to not make a difference. :))

Lori McNeil? I'm guessing because she and Robin givens were friends.

What year did Blout win her title Brian? I lived in the hampton area for a while, was Rennee from there?

Brian Stewart

Not McNeil.

Renee was born in Washington, DC. She went to the Hampton Institute ~1975, by my estimate. She then took her sabbatical, and returned to go to UCLA. She left UCLA in 1978 to turn pro. As of 1981, she was living in Carrollton, Texas.

She won her title in 1979. She had to play a tiebreak set in each of her 5 matches (must be a record), and had to go 3 sets to defeat Lucia Romanov in the 2nd round, and Nina Bohm in the semis. She beat Iva Budarova in the finals. Romanov probably ran out of gas, as she had to win 9 (!) matches to reach that second round, including pre-qualifying, qualifying, and the 1st round.

Another guess... Who is Kim Sands?

Brian Stewart

You got it.

Aug 9th, 2002, 06:37 AM
Cool. Ok, here's another one...

I have been ranked among the top 25 in singles.

I've played Federation Cup for the USA.

I have a Bachelor's degree in secondary education and Masters in Business Administration.

I was among 2 players (other being Pam Shriver) on Martina Navratilova's final shortlist of potential doubles partners for the 1981 season. Oh for the "what-ifs" of history...

Candy Reynolds?

Aug 13th, 2002, 04:34 AM

Rita Mae Brown used to joke about how she always apologized to Candy when she saw her b/c the ultimate deciding point in going for Pam over Candy was that Pam was younger; and Rita Mae had a good deal of influence over Martina at that point. No wonder Billie Jean King still blames her for encouraging Martina to end King's own doubles partnership with Martina.
