View Full Version : Wertheim's answer to Williams not crediting past coaches

Last week you wrote that the Williams sisters had technical help from coaches besides their father, Richard. That being the case, why do they never thank them? You would think they would be gracious enough to give credit where it is due, not just to their dad.

Right on. I mean, did you catch how effusively Hewitt praised Darren Cahill after Hewitt won Wimbledon? Neither Andre Agassi nor Monica Seles can go a match without deferring credit to Nick Bollettieri for all he did for their games in their formative years. And when she finally breaks through, you can bet Kournikova will speak glowingly of her days with Eric Van Harpen. If and when Marat Safin ever wins big, we'll be bleary-eyed and late for work if we listen to him thank all of his coaches.

Bottom line: Right now the Williams sisters only have two (or one? or none?) coaches. It is hardly a breach of etiquette or evidence of a lack of humility when they neglect to thank previous tutors.

I am left to assume that Richard wanted all the attention and credit. As far as attention goes... in my entire life, I have never seen someone make a t-shirt of themselves and then wear it around an event? Bizarre! Rick Macci has taught those girls basically all their fundamental strokes and tactics during their most important years...the formative ones. Why he continues to receive absolutely no credit... when he deserves ALL the credit; is due to Richard...Mr. humble himself!

Question? If my son grows up to be an alpine skiier...does that make me a skiing instructor? Oh yeah...I drove him to the slopes!

Great job Richar... oops, I mean coach Williams.

Write on is for Mr. Wertheim. I wouldn't care if joneg2' son became the greatest skier who ever lived and pissed (or did not piss) on everybody he knew.

Hey Rick Macci got paid and that was thanks enough. Richard and Oracene are now the coaches so get over it. They are the only ones who should receive thanks. Venus and Serena are now dominating the WTA under the watchful eyes of their parent coaches. This will continue for years to come, so grab a seat and enjoy the ride. Anything less may cause stress which could initiate nightmares. If you just cannot get over it then bad dreams to you! :p

joneg2 - Rick Macci himself doesn't claim he taught them "all their fundamental strokes and tactics during their most important years.." So why do you claim it?

Somewhere, Richard Williams is laughing at you.

Isn't it odd that Rick Macci, the man who 'coached' the #1 and #2 players inthe world has not one word about it on his website? Could someone post Rick Macci's claims to be Venus and Serena's coach? How about you, joneg2? You're the one who KNOWS he's the 'real' coach.

*Applause* something that makes sense ... for once.
