from what i've seen and read, i know that jelena is good friends with li na (or is it na li? i've seen her name both ways), good aquaintances with kuznetsova, ai sugiyama, and serena, and also bethanie mattek and chakvetadze.

i know "for sure" (me channeling jelena there) that she's not so buddy-buddy w/justine, bartoli, and ivanovic. not to say that she's enemies or that sorta thing (in justine's case i'm not sure), but just that she's not as close as she would be with someone else like, say, li na or sugiyama.

what about the other wta players? sharapova? hantuchova? who else is jelena friends w/?

I think with Justine - there's a healthy respect there... I can't see them being truly buddy-ish simply because of their current rivalry but Justine was interviewed by Eurosport and cited JJ as one of her main rivals and also commented that she'd overdone things this year... and JJ was awed by that - I think these were done at Stuttgart.

There seems to be more of an amicable rivalry there than with Ana/Bartoli "for sure" (hee!)

After Beijing, I wouldn't necessarily add Lindsay D as one of her friends!!!
Wayward tennis ball, anyone?

She's very friendly with Nadia Petrova and Jelena Kostanic-Tosic as well. I don't think there's any animosity between her & Justine, they're friendly, but Justine doesn't really make a lot of good friends on the tour (I think I heard Dechy and that's probably about it).

I'm very sure that JJ & Bartoli dislike each other, and I'm fairly sure of the same between JJ & Ana.

Jeca gets a long with Masha though :) And she especially likes Yuri. She thinks he's funny :haha: lol Who would have guessed? Well they go way back, so :)

Hmm, from what I've seen @ Zurich she pretty much sits with everybody. Likes to hang out with people who are having a blast. Justine just minded her business and ignored everybody. Didnt even spend time in the players' lounge.

Quite the social butterfly isn't she? :D

yes, she seems to be :)

i could see like jj, maria, tatiana, serena and a few choice others being the "popular ones" in the "in-crowd" of tennis

You should have seen them in Birmingham, they were so funny together. Plus they go way back -> Nick Bollettieri -> both young and immigrants -> always playing against each other -> so go figure -> arrow

Gah, I really dislike Serena. Dont like anything about her.

How can one forget that? The story of the young girl that was 7 years old when going to the States with 700 $ partly money from her grandparents' savings and that was given a spot at Nick's school at the age of 9 has been told a gazillion times :haha:

never really paid much attention to tennis in general until wimby this year, let alone maria. always saw commercials w/her and canon, first w/her and her name on the fence w/tennis balls, next with her pomeranian. i'm sure i'll have more unnecessary surprises about athletes in the future

There was an article that Predrag (I think) translated from Serbian somewhere in the N&A thread that quoted JJ as saying Serena's sense of humor is very similar to her own and they were very friendly. Also, we can recall that in Venus' pre-match interview at the US Open this year, she said JJ was "very nice."

I watched someone's YouTube clip of the ceremony at the end of the match - a veritable love-in saying each other was just the best - it made me chuckle - but it's good that she's quite the social butterfly... adds to the character of the girl, dontya think!?

Well, since Monika Seles is JJ's mentor, it's natural that they are quite good pals :)
