View Full Version : The 'Upper Tour'

The GS, Tier I and Tier II tournaments.

Sure Venus Williams, Monica Seles, Jelena Dokic et al play Tier III, IV and V tournaments. Occasionally. But these are virtual practice tournaments for these players. They win them routinely and with near certainty. Competition for the elite players is strictly Tier II and up. Here's 2002 so far. I'll add the last half of 2001 if I get motivated. Don't count on it.

There's a good bit of diversity here.

6 of 31 clay
9 of 31 indoors
12 of 31 Hard/Outdoors

** ********

2 RA - Rebound Ace
1 CI - Carpet Indoors
2 GSI - Greenset Indoors
2 GC - Green Clay
4 RC - Red Clay
2 GR - Grass
3 SI - Supreme Indoors
3 HI - Hard Indoors

12 HO - Hard Outdoor
31 tours

This is where Amazons rule. (Though names like Hingis and Rubin do occasionally grace the winners circle.)

What is different about Rebound Ace compared to a hard court?

I dont' think we can categorize Venus as playing tier 3 and lower.

She's only played one tier 3 this year, Gold Coast, since 1998.

I don't remember her playing tier 4 or 5.

Monica played low ranked tournaments last year to compenstate for the Year end Championship.

Jelena doesn't win every tier 3 event she enters, Strasbourgh is a tier 3 and she didn't win it.

Interesting. It's pretty much who would expect. Personally, I hoping for more Iva vs. Patty, Chanda vs. Myskina finals! :)

Fingon - She did play the Tier III. I once started a thread about Tier III Players, didn't mention Gold Coast, and people got all over me. Yeah, it was her warmup for the year, and she maybe plays one TIer III every year. (Not 2001, I think, but she played Oklahoma City 97, 98, 99.

The phrase was 'NEAR certainty'. I was aware of Strasbourg. By now, you've seen the 'Developmental Tour' thread.

mboyle - Rebound Ace is a rubber compound. Depending on how you treat it, it can be faster or slower. Many players don't favor it, because its gets sticky when its hot. A lot of sprained knees and rolled ankles have occurred on Rebound Ace. Well, that's what Cliff Drysdale siad during OZ. I don't have all the player injuries by surface in front of me.
