First off, no surprise to me that Monica has twice as many votes as her nearest competitor. :)

Secondly, it smells an awful lot like sour grapes in here...LMAO.

Personally, I'd rather see Monica win this poll than win on the court. It shows that people admire her as a human being, not just an athlete. Which in the big picture -- is worth a lot more.

Lastly, to those that are insinuating that by clicking on the site they have been "tricked" by some "scheme" into voting for Monica, and the results are tainted, pull your head out of your behinds. The thread author simply posted the link to the page that showed after he/she had voted. Sheeesh. Some people just can't deal with the fact that Monica is more beloved than their fave.

Guess what. She earned it. So get over it.

Monica, you continue to rock. :D

:) :) But, it really begs the question, "would people still feel as they do, had Monica NOT been "stabbed"??? I mean, would so many people "idolize" her, had her circumstances been different???:D :D

I am, and have for a long time admired Seles, but I wonder how much of my admiration/fondness is related to what happened to Monica???? And, will, the fans "ever get over it"??? For, you see, I think Monica herself, has moved on, but, the fans present an altogether different issue. They almost always bring up the "stabbing incident", regardless. Just a curious question????

The answer to your question is more complex than you might think, but I'll try.

I belive that Monica is so beloved because she is an incredibly gracious, generous, and lovely person. (I happen to know this personally.)

I don't think fans flock to her because of sympathy because someone tried to kill her. Not for the most part, anyway. But as is anyone, Monica is the product of her experiences. The tragedies that she's suffered have brought out the best in her...as I stated before, she's become an exquisite human being in every sense. Additionally, her courage, grace, and determination in light of all she's been through are inspirational to many. So these two factors, I think explain why she is such a fan favorite now. And they were brought about in part by the stabbing (and the death of her father).

It's really impossible to know "how" Monica may have grown up if it hadn't happened. Who the giggly teenage might have become had she not had to endure these trials by fire. But she did, and that's why she's who she is.

Does that answer your question?
