Venus and Serena (esp. Serena) are playing so well right now but we all know that the #2 ranking is still up for grabs and that anything can happen in tennis like injuries , burnout, retirement or just other players stepping up and getting better. So which non-Williams do you think will become the next number one in the world?

Of course I had to vote for my fave if she stays healthy but otherwise my vote would go to DANIELA HANTUCHOVA.

I think Hingis, when she gets back from injury. I beleive that her injury even though it is bad, has given her time to think of new strategies of how she can beat power players, and she will soon succeed:):)

I really, really do hope Hingis. :)
But her injury will surely give her a hard time. I doubt that she'll ever completely get over it.
Hingis does have a unique game but it will still be hard to win against the hard hitters.

Where's the option for those of us who feel:
"Can't none of them beat those Williams!"

for one what does somebody becoming #1 have to do with the #2 being UP FOR GRABS?
Anyway, which top player or player will get to the #1 spot, is going to be the player who wins some slams. Also it depends on how well Serena does through out her tennis career. I see her DOMINATING the field, and retiring with at least 10 slams. Anyway, I vote for Kim and Lindsay as the two who can possibly become #1. The rest I don't think will get there as Serena unless Serena or Venus retire. I only see Kim or Lindsay as winning slams to even think about getting up there with Serena or even Venus for that matter.
Capriati-Her serving is in need of an overhaul. She is not going to get any younger. She could get to #2, but I think she'll fall in rank soon as I don't see her defending the Oz open. Her draws in slams will get harder for her to win. Especially since Lindsay is back. I just have this feeling she is going to go on a downward slide.
Hingis- Her serve is so attackable she'll start getting spanked by lesser known powerful players. Nothing against her game, but the laws of relatitvity are against her. Hingis is getting old as well, that is in tennis years. She will get her rank back up, but she can't win slams let alone become #1. I think she has the game, but it is so attackable playing taller faster and powerful girls. Her aura is gone now and people are starting to figure her out. ALTHOUGH I NEVER UNDER-ESTIMATE HINGIS, as she still has got MOXY.
Seles- as much as I like her, time is also against her as well. I think until she decides to become 100% commited to fitness she'll go out in semi's. Great striker of the ball, but power players are hitting harder and the two hands can become a liabilty.
Henin- great game, her fitness is good. Her serve is powerful for her size. Great all-court game. She lacks the head to go with it. Mentally fragile. I think she needs about 3 more years, and I think she will be a late bloomer. She is my 4th pick. But I just don't see her winning slams. And whoever wins the slams will win that top rank especially since the points went up.
Clijsters- can do it. Mentally good, has all the weapons and the right attitidue on the court. Just a matter of time. Could win her first US open this year, but I see her doing great in her J"unior year", 2003. it is easy to play strees free, when your the new kid on the block. It is tough as hell when your trying to defend those points, in the sophmore season. It is even better when it is your junior year, and your stress free and the holder of slam finals on your belt. Henin, though the same, has not the mental brain... yet.
Daniela- I like what I see with this kid. But she needs a good solid two years, I am interested to see how she performs NEXT year, and how she handles the pressure with defending and being the target. I do think she will become #1 and too be honest, I think she is a good possiblity, but just not so sure how she will perform in the future. She reminds me of Venus, a bit erratic in her young years but has many weapons and you know with an open mind that she is going to just kick somebody's ass soon. Just a matter of time with Dani just don't know when.
Eleni- good but until she gets herself into tip top shape she doesn't stand a chance in hell. I like her style and game, but I know it is not good enough. Personnally I think other players should be on the list before her.
Mauresmo-even though two weeks ago this gal was getting on my nerves, I still have a soft spot for her. Besides I think she was just hurt. I don't know if she made those quotes or not, so I will give her the benefit of the doubt... THIS TIME.:)
Anyway, I think she has the weapons and game. In fact Mary j Fernandez said it best about Mauresmo. "she has so many weapons that it is hard for her to pick the right one" Or something like that. Which can also make her lose a match. Personally I still think she must work on her mental game. I can see her winning a slam against anyone but a "Williams". I really don't think she'll break through, but if she does I would be happy for her.
Dokic- hell no! should not be on this list at all. I like her and she is nice to watch and she is mentally focused, but she is also working her body to the ground. In fact I would not be surprised to see her out with an extinsive injury in the near future. In fact she fights on the court, and is mentally tough, but then again mentally tough also means off the court and right now, she is acting like a dubya. Sorry Jelena fans, but we all know she is PLAYING JUST WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TOO MUCH.
So in "SHORT":):) I think LINDSAY will get the #1 rank before the rest of them, as she has NOTHING MUCH TO DEFEND and has weapons and power and been there done that. Her game is with the "here and now"all she needs is a good draw and a good match or two. She can hang with Serena and Venus and the whole WTA.

Martina Hingis !!!!! Melanie Molitor told her since she was a baby ,that she will be No1 FOREVER :bounce: :bounce:

I'm sorry, but I don't think Hingis has what it takes to be at the top anymore. Serena and Venus have waxed her off the court for the past 4-5 meetings.
I think Lindsay has the best chance. She always gives them a run for their money. But, I don't even see her doing it. The only way I see a Williams being knocked off the top would be injury!!
