View Full Version : Monica MUST have a great hardcourt season!

Clearly, she must get herself ranked ahead of Jennifer Capriati for US Open seedings, who has less points to defend than Monica. That won't be easy.

She MUST do this and get ranked #3, because she WILL get screwed over at the US Open in favour of Lindsay. Of course, she has no chance of a top 4 seeding if Martina makes it back (screwed over twice).

We know she WILL do it :)
Go Monica :)

Monica will have a good hard court season and I think that her ascent to #3 is quite probable!
C'mon Monica!!!

Go Monica

You're right. There's a great chance that Lindsay will be 1 of the top 4 seed. Or maybe not, I think a lot of us forgot that Lindsay did not reach a slam final all last year and was eliminate in the Quarters at the US Open. I also don't think seed matter that much, look at Serena who was seeded #10 last year and made it to the finals.

No....we're just worried they'll give Lindsay a protective ranking in the top 4 bumping Monica out of a top 4 seed at the US Open regardless of what she does.

Good luck Monica in the summer hardcourt season!

Go Monica... but I till hope Venus and Serena and Lindsay are in the top 4 seeds... :D

I hope that screw her over even to help my Martina for that would be quite unfair. :(

Okay, how can you say Monica gets screwed over by another players protected ranking when this whole ranking protection system was basically created when Monica came back in 1995? Nobody is getting screwed and if they are we need to discuss ASV and Conchita Martinez and Jana Novotna getting screwed in late 1995-1996, when Monica jumped infront of them in seedings.

I hope Monica can repeat her wonderful performances from last year's hardcourt season. Except for the US Open, she was amazing and I hope she can take one of those titles this year.

But if you asked Monica about Lindsay and Martina coming back, I think she would be the LAST person to use the word screwed...HELLO!

Monica's was a special case that few of the active players had any interest in supporting. They would rather have punished her for being the victim of an assassination attempt, but Martina N kept pushing them. It was NOT a "injury protected ranking".

The rules clearly state that a player entered under injury protected ranking is to be seeded by their ACTUAL ranking, not their "special ranking", but that the WTA retains the prerogative to seed them differently. Therefore, barring additional intervention from the tour, Lindsay would have been 7th seed.

I probably would have been less upset if they waited a tournament or two to see how she was playing before they decided to try and groove her into the Final. Hopefully Kim will see to it that she doesn't get a sniff of that Final.

And of course Monica isn't going to complain, Lindsay is her friend.

But really, do you think Lindsay had any part to play in this? I think not. If there must be some one to be blamed... it is the WTA.

Agree with you 100% Williams_Rulez...the WTA and, perhaps, the promoters of the California tournies (I would suspect the same thing will happen in all three), who would of course like to see their hometown player get a more favourable draw. I highly doubt Lindsay would have made secret phone calls to rig the draw.

I also think DH is right on the money about the difference between Monica's comeback and an injury-protected ranking comeback. It would have been a little less obvious a sop to Lindsay if the powers that be had waited for a few events to see if Lindsay 'needed' the special ranking, which I doubt she does.

Still, Monica will do what she has to without complaint, as usual ;)

Too bad about the injury. If she had duplicated her point totals of 2001, she would have been seeded ahead of Jennifer. Boy, wouldn't that have been fun, to see if they would dare screw "The Great Jen" over in favour of Lindsay?
