she's like 'I don't think we should do drug testing because I don't want people showing up unexpected at my door.' she's a Jehovah's Witness! as a young kid, she used to go and bang on people's doors all the time! how rude!!!

and actually if you would follow up research, instead of starting a stupid thread like this, you would know that when asked if she ever did that, her response is No, they are Jeehovah's Witnesses but they have nerver gone out witnessing to people and knocking on their doors. If you are a Jevhovah's Witness, you don't have to go out knocking, dang please follow up on some reasearch or something.

SORRY BUT I THINK I JUST MADE YOUR THREAD POINTLESS- lightningboy21

um, i disagree. she said in an interview early in her career that she and her sister went out once a week to her neighbors. _you_ didn't do your research.

The drug testing should be done by surprise several times a year. I don't think V+S are that brand of Jehovah's Witness. They posed in very skimpy swimwear for a fashion magazine so I don't think they are that conservative.

Don't "KNOCK" people's religions. I don't really have a religion, but I respect those who have their beliefs. you should do the same "JUNIOR".

if you know anything about jehova witnesses then you should also know that blood is a very special thing for them. They believe the soul is in it and that's why they often refuse bloodtransfusion!
so regarding her believe it could be a reason why she doesn't want that people come at her home and control it!

Unless she's still banging on doors, what Venus did or didn't do as a kid does not make her a hypocrite NOW.

Nice introduction.

lightningboy21
Jul 19th, 2002, 06:32 PM
i don't agree with that at all. look at what's happening with bush and harken - just because he doesn't get corporate loans _now_ doesn't mean that he's not accountable for past behavior.

lightningboy21 you are an idiot! She NEVER said she was agaisnt random drug testing, what she said she did not wan't someone coming to her house unannounced. I for one never open my door to any un-expected visitor. A lot of people have that rule.

That was funny and I really love Venus. If you were trying to make a serious statement, you failed. But it did make me laugh, so you get points for humor. Please find another way to discredit Venus this argument is weak, but funny. LOL

Bush and Cheney were grown men with years of experience in business when they participated in those scams, that is not at all the same, imo (although I'd agree Bush hasn't matured much since he was an adolescent), they were not teenagers finding their way in the world and living in their parents' house.

lightningboy21
Jul 19th, 2002, 06:56 PM
victory1, this has _nothing_ to do with the drug testing! it only has to do with the fact venus said she doesn't want visitors unannounced at _her_ house and then she made a big stink a few years ago about how as a practicing Jehovah's Witness, she was happy to go around to other people's houses unannounced.

I think there is a big difference between knocking on someone's door to ask them for some of their TIME (like Jehovah's witnesses do to talk about their faith) and knocking on someone's door and asking them for some of their URINE or BLOOD.
When the Jehovah's witnesses come along (or the girl scouts for that matter) you can politely or not so politely tell them to get lost. No skin off your nose.
you can't do that with random off-site drug testing. the testers must be allowed in to take a drug test. if you refuse, that counts as a positive drug test. BIG impact on your life/career.

if you think the two are comparable, you are a bit daft.

People have to remember Venus and Serena are celebrities who are Jehovahs witnesses. You wouldnt find Michael Jackson knocking on your door.

Use your brains if you had any. Venus wouldn't know those people who came to test her for drugs, so it makes it even less likely that she'll be safe when she lets them in. But hello, if Venus did knock on doors, I'm pretty sure that her neighbours would know her, would recognise her.

I didn't say anything offensive at all. The skimpy outfits they wear (which are fine by me) are PROOF that they are not very conservative. I think that the difference between going door to door for your beliefs and for samples of blood or urine are quite OBVIOUS!!!!! Of course it is much more of an intrusion. Nonetheless Capriati, Williams and ALL PLAYERS should drop the "privacy" argument and submit to the testing so that they can prove over and over and over that they are not using the drugs. This way, their accomplishments mean even more. And yes the testing should be done quite frequently and over and over. Sorry folks that's the hard, cold truth. Don't ask me for any sympathy for any player who then doesn't wish to follow these rules. We fans pay out the wazoo to see them and these girls are TREATED VERY VERY WELL and the lower-ranked players should be tested frequently also and will thus have the peace of mind to know that higher ranked players with much more money are not having an unfair advantage in keeping them down.

well as a tennis player or world class athlete of any sort, I think if it becomes a rule than it is good and they really shouldn't complain about it, it is illegeal so if you are doing it you should be kicked off the tour

c'mmon guys... why must we always go back to this "either you think the williams sisters are perfect or you're an evil racist" buisness...
I respect Venus and Serena's faith, and I don't think them complaining about people just showing up at their door step is wrong, but lightingboy made an interesting point: they belong to a faith that does just that. before anyone yells at me, I just wrote a seminar paper about JW, and I know what I'm talking about. it's a part of their faith- recruting(sp). it doesn't mean Venus and Serena do it, and I don't think it's in any way derogatory to the sisters. why get so upset?

Rayny
Jul 20th, 2002, 10:58 AM
I don't think you can compare what Jehovah's Witnesses do to a random person showing up at the doorstep of a celebrity asking for bodily fluids.

Celebrities have major concerns about stalkers and assorted loonies who want to harm them. Think of George Harrison getting stabbed in his home, John Lennon being shot, actress Rebecca Shaeffer being killed by a crazed fan who rang her doorbell. Both Serena and Martina have been the recent victims of stalkers. Do you really think its fair to ask them to let someone in their home?

A better idea would be to selct a safe designated location well in advance (a hospital or clinic) and call the player right before the test is to be administered and ask them to report to the testing site. Also, the testing could be done at the tournaments to ensure that the staff is legitimate.

Bella
Jul 20th, 2002, 03:45 PM
Rayny, random people are not going to show up at celebrities' doors. Known people are going to show up at tennis players' doors. It's not as if the WTA can't figure out how to do this safely. Venus and Jennifer didn't understand that? That is bothering me.

Lots of you have extolled Venus and Serena's religiousness as a virtue before. Did you absolutely forget that when complaining about it being brought up? Did you get confrontational or rude when other people brought it up before?

I think the original poster set up a trap for my fellow Williams fans, and many of them fell into it. Note that he/she ended the post with an unexpected "how rude!", just to add more bang.

I also think this poster is actually an imposter, ie, an old poster (one of those so-called haters) assuming a new name. So, if we can, just forget about him/her.

Venus is fine and will keep on dominating the tour for a while with her sister.

Venus is fine and will keep on dominating the tour for a while with her sister.

You mean Venus will keep being dominated BY her sister.

Anyway, I have personal experiences with Jehovah's Witnesses, and those who said that if Venus went to doors when she was little, that her neighbors would know her, that's wrong. Jehovah's show up in any neighborhood and come to the door unannounced. I get a weekly visit from the Jehovah's Witnesses (they just don't know when to give up hahaha). They aren't from my neighborhood and I've never seen them in my life. I just wish they would stop coming to my door, it is illegal here after all, to come door to door to try and convince people to change religions. They are really annoying and the word "no" means nothing to them. Next time I have to call the police on them I guess!

Bella
Jul 20th, 2002, 06:08 PM
Vanity, is it the same person or two people each time? If you have been clear and firm and they keep coming, I understand your frustration, but please, give them the notice next week that you will call the police on the next visit. They are doing what their religion requires.

Just tip-toe to the front door and look through the peephole. If they are Witnesses, then don't answer. I don't answer the door anyway unless I know who it is on sight or I'm expecting a service person. Also, if you have an intercom, ask them who they are and what they want. If you don't want to hear the routine, ask them to leave. Or better yet, respond that you are Catholic. They know it's hardest to turn a Catholic. Trust me, it has worked for me before. They'll split faster than one of Venus' first serves. I have also had Mormons appear unannounced as well. It is not just Witnesses that go door to door. I sort of admire they dedication, but I'm not interested in becoming one.

Vanity

 I've had various encounters with Witnesses, and don't think what they do is "recruitment". Usually, they speak specifically about certain "issues" and offer "their" literature on that specific topic. Their purpose seems to convince you to "live" according to their "beliefs", so, maybe the true purpose is "recruitment". Just never thought in terms of them recruiting. I've nver been asked to attend any services or other meetings, just to read their materials or hear their versions on specific issues.

I guess, in actuality, it is recruitment as the ultimate goal, through persuasion that their way is the better way. LOL:eek:

About the various religious groupings that come to the door...I can seldom distinguish between them...all have that weird brainwashed look in their eyes, and often seem to have American accents.

The two facts are probably connected. ;)

They are very hard to get rid of...and remind me of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. (shudder) :)

The Witnesses who came to my door (about 10 times ?? ) did not look brainwashed. In fact, one of the chippies looked like she didn't want to be there. All were Black, but I don't think it's a Black faith. The first time I actually talked to them, curious as I was. The literature was live in paradise and the pictures and all, painted, not photos. They seemed genuinely into it, not brainwashed. It's a real religion, no doubt, not a cult. I don't think door to door works, but who knows.

Vanity
Jul 20th, 2002, 10:28 PM
The jehovah's witness' are definately not an all black faith. Most of the ones that came to my door were white; I only remember two black and one chinese. I think door to door just annoys people, especially when you tell them time and time over that you don't want to be involved in their religion. I am also not one of those who is afraid to open my door, either. I don't mind them coming around once, perhaps even two or three times, but coming to my door just about every week for the last couple of years gets on my nerves. So, perhaps some people can understand why I am annoyed. :)

I'm still waiting for lightning to post the quote of Venus saying she went door to door. I usually don't take people who start threads like this at face value.

As for the drug testing, Venus pointed out the danger in that. When she said how a stranger showed up at her door claiming to be from the WTA or USTA or something like that. They are famous.

What if Serena's stalker or Martina's stalker showed up that way? Before they knew about them, and they let them in? Do you know how dangerous that can be.

Anyway welcome to the board. Believe me you haven't said even near the magnitude of stuff that's said about Venus and other players. But I'm sure you'll try to do your best :)

Hypocrite? Venus? I don't think so. Those of you Hingis', Capriati's

I don't like Hingis and Capriati. And I am not stupid to start a
thread about these players in any way. If you don't like somebody, you are not supposed to talk about them.
