Well ... that doesn't look good at all!!!! One title in the last 52 weeks (a GS for sure but still!) and only 3 other finals ... all lost against the same player (Serena)! it's amazing how is she's been totally dominated by a Williams sister in the past year!!!! 7 out of her 15 losses (~50%) were due to a Williams! I understand her feelings towards the Williams family now !!!!!!

Well besides her loss against Stevenson in the beginning of the year (perhaps due to rustiness), she's consistent in her defeats ... only against top11 players!

One GS is definitely better than having no GS or Tier 1 title since the start of this year

jay_k- good point, but i don't agree on that opinion.

i think any title would be good for her, as long as she gets an easy draw, she may win. But her title drought will continue, as long as Venus are in the tournie's, and seeded 1 and 2 at the slams. Only hingis has accomplished the feet of beating both of them in a slam, but Really venus didn't show up at the 2001 ausie semis.

I'm not a big fan of rating players just by the titles they've won, but no matter how you look at it, in the last year JenCap has won a grand slam tournament.

So to me, she leads the rest of the tour apart from Williams sisters.

CONSISTENCY! is what this story tells!

lets not knock Jen. I think her record is not worthy of the #1 ranking (thus she is now third, with Monica close on her heels)
but she is pretty much a lock to go at least to the quarters of most events, more likely the semis. that's still pretty darn good. and 3 GS over the past 18 months is nothing to sneeze at.

losing to serena and venus late in events is nothing to hang your head about. the matches with serena have been pretty tight matches, its not like she's getting blown off the court.

Thank you RAA, exactly the point I was going to make!!
Ok, she might have only won one title in the past year but you can bet your bottom dollar that there aren't many players out there who, in every single one of their tournaments has reached AT LEAST, the quarters, semi's or Final! (taking out Sydney of course for Jennifer) she has reached ALL of these in the past year :p

joao : Well ... that doesn't look good at all!!!!

Why don't you take another look at where she has reached in her tournaments then you might actually see something

:D :D :DJenn had best start winning something, or else, she can kiss the number 1 (#1) good-bye!!! I can't see her getting back to the top with just semi/runner-up in tournies. SHE NEEDS TO WIN MORE TOURNAMENTS!! It's as simple as that!!!:D :D :D :D

That record and a GS title every year wuld be acceptable every year for the rest of her career.

I still say she's very consistent in the tournaments she plays.

Jennifer is the only player who has troubled Serena this year .Serena got a lot of juicy points for beating Jen when she was # 1 .Now Jen should just start returning the favors.....;)

RAA

I agree that climbing back to #1 will be tough, given where Serena is in terms of points and number of tourneys, and the fact that Serena was off with an injury for the early part of 2002.

But, honestly, the criteria I look at most closely when evaluating how a player is doing is grand slam performance. if you ask me, you can win the Toray Pan pacific title 10 times and that doesn't come close to winning a grand slam. so, yes, jen is lacking in the overall titles department. but she had three slams before Serena even won her second slam, and Venus has four, which isn't that far ahead of Jen either...

Its a weird record for a 3 times grandslam champion!

It's a million dollar record

It is a rather good record. I mean, as long as she wins a slam, it is a good record. ;)

She is a consistent enough performer, and she won a slam. If she could win only 1 title in the whole year, well, she chose th right title... :D

I think she was lucky Serena was not around at the AO ... she might not have even a title this year! But we will never know!

When I say it doesn't look that good I mean it doesn't look good for someone who was #1 player in the world not long ago, and a 2 times GS winner in 2001!

Of course if you compare her record with anybody else's but the Williams it looks good! But do you think JCap is satisfied with herself, being beaten always by the same players and not winning a singles title in 6 months???

I don't think JCap's goal is to reach the SF or the finals in each tournament ... I think like any other player she wants to win it! And lately, she's done very poorly to reach that goal!!!! So ... no it doesn't look good!
