pretty good draw.. Nicole can reach final but Vakulenko can be tough.. I hope Nicole won't lost early if she's seeded #1 again :D

Nicole can reach final but Vakulenko can be tough..
But I think Lindsay Davenport will be tough.

And it would be an interesting match if Nicole gets to play her in the Final.

Good luck Nikki.

If she wins Linz I wouldn't mind seeing her withdraw. I just want her to end 2007 with at least 1 title.

I hope she can put Linz behind her and move on.

She can definitely win this title.

Good luck Nicole! :)

One thing: Nicole MUST reach the final.

I hope she can put Linz behind her and move on.

Playing this would indeed help forgetting about another missed opportunity, but I believe Kodat's policy is to take big breaks after each of Nicole's chokejobs, so she'll probably withdraw.

I'm not sure if this is the wisest course of action, since I often see players doing the exact opposite, with good results. After losing to a ghost from his past in Madrid on Sunday, Fed moves on and plays his 1st round match at Basel on Tuesday. After losing finals she should have won, Azarenka plays the very next week, doing decently in Prague and beating Sharapova in Moscow.

And to our Canadian friends, if Nicole does make it there: be nice to her, even if she isn't nice to you.

I guess I'll have to get used to her beating up scrubs at Mickey Mouse events, seeing as though that's all she can do.

Sighs.

It would be nice if Nicole could end the year by winning a title (even if it is yet another T3), but I'm not sure if she can beat Lindsay (or Vera)...

Patience, guys. She's still young and in development. Fruit will come eventually, just don't lose faith. I know what I am talking about. ;)

Question about YEC... What has to happen for Nicole to be there? With Venus withdrawing, can Nicole qualify if Maria withdraws?

Vaidisova
Oct 28th, 2007, 05:42 PM
According to TBE

no Venus now so

1 Henin 2 Kuznetsova
3 Jankovic 4 Ivanovic
5 S Williams 6 Sharapova
7 Chakvetadze 8 Hantuchova

alts Bartoli and Dementieva (Vaidisova needs final in Quebec to be alt#2)

if Sharapova withdraws

1 Henin 2 Kuznetsova
3 Jankovic 4 Ivanovic
5 S Williams 6 Chakvetadze
7 Hantuchova 8 Bartoli

alts Dementieva, Vaidisova

Have you already forgotten about Zurich?

There she beat Jankovic in a fairly routine match and then was only a few games away from giving the world #1 a beatdown.

She is soooo close to finally breaking through to becoming a top 5 player (at least).

She decided to play finally (if she's in Quebec, because we don't know at this moment).I'm surprised because, as Corswandt said, she has a tendency to not play during a moment when she loses a match in three sets.(which is the worst thing to do of course, I agree.)

Derek.

I don't think so.

After her lost against Ivanovic, she got sick.
After her loss against Peer, she got injured.

It just happens to be a coincidence with the breaks after chokes. :p

This sportswriter from Montreal newspaper is blogging from the tournament http://communities.canada.com/montrealgazette/blogs/opencourt/default.aspx

I emailed her about if she had seen Nicole at the tournament. She said Nicole is supposed to arrive tonight and that she would try and get pics/video of Nicole practicing (there are pics/video of Lindsay on the blog).

I saw it on the official site (http://www.challengebell.com/challengebell/#). Poor Nikki. I was really hoping that she win the title in Quebec City and once again it looks like another injury. This is a bad way to end the year. I hope that she takes an extensive break so that she can come back strong in `08.

There is a photo of her walking off the court on the official website.
She's walking alone and nothing visible on her wrist.

Maybe she was tired. I will try to get more details tomorrow.

Well, I checked back and she indeed has a strapping (?) around her wrist while she play but not walking of the court.

It's still very stranger she retired after winning the set.

Nicole's 2007 injuries:

Finger cut
Wrist injury
Mono/viral illness
Hamstring
Wrist injury

I think that is all. What a horrible year it has been. :o

I hope the wrist injury isn't that serious (considering she had just won the 2nd set )...

It's the same problem she had during the claycourt season. I wonder whether it's really that bad or it's just a precaution because obviously she was able to continue in the match waiting for the outcome of second set and then retiring.

Neptune
Nov 1st, 2007, 11:03 AM
I don't really know if it's a bad injury or she knew she wouldn't have enough energy to finish the tournament. She tried to play four weeks in a row which is hard.

Vaidisova
Nov 1st, 2007, 12:11 PM
Vaidisova, for her part, said the wrist injury was something ongoing that had forced her to retire from other tournaments earlier in the year. She said she had started feeling it in the middle of the second set.

There were twinges last week in Austria, but she thought giving it a few days' rest might help. So she did make the trip. But it was a wasted trip, even if it was really just a minor detour on her way home to Florida.

Seeds Enjoy Mixed Fortunes On Day 3 in Quebec City

QUÉBEC CITY, Canada - Wednesday's action at the Bell Challenge was highlighted by the premature exit of top seed Nicole Vaidisova, who was forced to retire from her first round match against Renata Voracova with a right-wrist injury. Among the day's other winners at the $175,000, Tier III event were No.2 seed Vera Zvonareva and No.3 Julia Vakulenko, who came through tough encounters with Severine Brémond and Stéphanie Dubois respectively.

Vaidisova made the brighter start in the all-Czech contest and although she took the opening set, her lower-ranked compatriot was posing the world No.14 plenty of problems. At 2-2 in the second set Voracova's pressure finally began to pay dividends and she took four of the next five games to level the match up, 26 63. However, at this juncture Vaidisova, who had her right wrist taped from the outset, decided she was unable to continue and disconsolately trudged off court.

"I've had this injury before and I started feeling it midway through the second set," Vaidisova said. "From there it just got worse and worse and it was especially painful on forehand returns. It's disappointing, because I obviously like this city a lot and I would have liked to have finished the year with a win."
