Because Lindsay is seeded #2 there. :D So,if 1 and 3 get on the same side,no all-Williams final. :bounce:

why is Lindsay going to be #2???

I am not complaining though, hopefully she will be playing as well as her seed by then!! :)

welcome back Lindsay hope you are as awesome as always (right away)!!

Why qould Lindsay be seeded number 2 there?

And of course it may not happen, they both have to win 6 matches first.

Why would Lindsay be seeded #2 at the Open? The only way that can happen is if she increases her ranking throughout the summer up until the Open. I just do not see that happening unless she wins everything she plays and the Williams fall out early.

As far as I have understood, Lindsay does not have an injury protected ranking. Isn't that right?

Lindsay has a seeding of #2 in Stanford next week. HOWEVER, she is seeded BEHIND Venus Williams. That means that she would be seeded #3 at highest at the US Open.

^_^ they have on the us open entry thing, lindsay is shown to be #2 seed :o

maybe that was for last year?

Considering last year's finalists, and the last two US Open champions, are currently ranked #1 and #2, It's somewhat doubtful that Lindsay will be the #2 seed at the US Open.

the only way it is possible is if she gets an injury ranking, which may be the case

There's always a chance that it won't be an all-Williams final because nothing is certain especially in tennis. But I don't think it would be because of them not being seeded 1 and 2, I don't see how that could happen at all.

Serena is going to be seeded number one because she is so far ahead in terms of points that no one can unseat her before USO. Plus, she was last year's finalist and the 1999 winner, so they won't mess with her seeding.

Venus will be seeded number two because she is also too far ahead to be dethroned before the USO. She is the two time defending champ, so they aren't going to mess with her seeding also.

Lindsay doesn't have a protected ranking. That only happens in cases like Mary Pierce where her rankings sank so low that she is protected to enter tournaments (main draws) without qualifying rounds. However, because Lindsay didn't have any points to defend up until Eastbourne, she is safely in the top ten. And she is coming back with the BOW so she should be OK since she can now defend her points!

They may give her a higher seeding because she's done well at the USO before, but it won't be #2. Maybe #5.

Good luck to all three! Whoever makes the finals is fine with me!

Oh, and they won't officially announce the seedings for another few weeks. So whatever they have on their current site is old. Maybe from last year.

And how do you know that Lindsay will defeat Serena???
Serena won the last meetings, so it's more likely Serena to win and not Lindsay.

OMG and Lindsay just cameback! And why is Lindsay A RIGHT LOSS for Serena??? You're talking too much Jordan

Relax folks. Venus & Serena will be seeded #1 and 2 for the USO. As for the final: One would have to be a soothsayer to predict the future...but I wouldn't BET against it happening...

I can't see the USTA mucking up such a potential final when the rankings dictate that Venus and Serena are on opposite sides of the draw. Curiously, Lindsay is seeded #2 at the BOTW, ahead of Monica, who is higher ranked.

Even if the USTA were to give Lindsay a #2 seeding, I would suspect it would be a co-#2, putting her and Venus on the same side of the draw (opposite Serena). But I just don't see it happening; especially after the big stink over the way they manipulated the men's seeds a few years back.

Davenport was seeded #2 in Stanford over Venus Williams who is #2 in the world, so going by that logic she will be seeded #3 at the US Open

I just hope Monica scrapes that #4 seed now over Capriati.

Lindsay will be seeded third, behind the Williams. It is obvious since they seeded Davenport behind Venus at the Bank of West Classic this year.

Well if Lindsay does get a higher seeding than her ranking its disgusting! She should get the seeding that her ranking giver her which will be 9 maybe higher!

They could just bump Venus and Serena to #3 and 4, so they'd still be on opposite sides of the draw. Then they could give the vacant #1 seed to someone like... oh.... Chanda! Problem solved. :)

harloo
Jul 19th, 2002, 07:24 PM
Zvonera, are you serious? There is no way that Lindsay will have the #1 or #2 seed at the U.S Open. She has been beaten by either Venus/Serena 3 years in a row at this tournament. Serena and Venus are last years finalist ranked #1, #2 competing for the last 3 of 4 slams. And at last years U.S. Open Lindsay and Martina was there.

Both Ladies own Davenport in recent head to head matches. I just don't see it happening this year, but if Lindsay has a great comeback then it might be possible next year.;)

I would laugh forever if they rigged the seedings that way and Williams sisters ended up on the same sides of the draw, it would basically say that attaining a ranking is pointless because the WTA / US open retain the right to fix the draw as they see fit.

Anyway it's not going to happen, not only for the reasons harloo mentioned but also :

Every year until this year that they've both entered US open, Williams sisters could potentially have been on the same side of the draw ... has it ever happened ???

I think some one here is just having wishful thinking... :)

This is really a Great News!

I'm hoping Lindsay DAVENPORT will get #.2 seed.

I'll reckon (My prediction for The US OPEN 2002 seeding)

#.1 SERENA Williams
#.2 Lindsay DAVENPORT
#.3 VENUS Williams
#.4 Martina HINGIS (IF she's decide to playing)
#.4 Jennifer CAPRIATI
#.6 Monica SELES
#.7 Justine HENIN
#.8 Kim CLIJSTERS
#.9 Amelie MAURESMO

Really great BS is more like it. For those wishing an end to the Williams/Williams finals........I don't think it will happen this year.
Can you imagine the out cry if Venus and Serena ended up on the same side of the draw......Can we all say FIXED or RIGGED? I mean, the moderators would have to shut down the site.

I doubt that Lindasy will be seeded #2. She'll have a chance to prove herself next week and hopefully face Venus in the tournament final next week. Boy, I can hardly wait for the fireworks to begin.

Katulampa, how can Martina be the forth seed?
if she enters as a wild card, will she be seeded?

Why would they seed the two-time defending champ number 3 behind Lindsay? Explain that to me please, i'm confused. And clearly Serena is miles ahead of the rest of the field so there is no way they'd mess with her ranking. I do think they are going to be seeded 1 and 2.

Martina has a Injured Ranking protection (I think she was #.3 before the French Open & Wimbledon 2002), I read from some of the tennis source, she will get WC if she's not sure iether she'll playing or NOT, and she will probably get #.3 or #.4 seed?

Martina doesn't have an injury protected ranking. Youhave to be out six months.

Lindsay's injury protected ranking is #3. She gets seeded ahead of anyone but the current #1, #2, and #3.

A much likely scenario for no 'All Williams' final is injury. I don't see a Venus or Serena playing hurt making the finals. They're better than everyone else, but not that much better.

Hee.

I'm a huge Lindsay fan;but I don't want her bumped up
on some protected injury ranking or whatever they make up.
Aren't there a couple of other players that did well this year...
Venus? Jenn?

I love Lindsay too...but it's a bit much. She doesn't deserve
to be seeded 2. Even Lindsay wouldn't want it. Let's be
realistic here. Lindsay is only worth a bumped up as the
number 4 seed, if anything. I'm thinking of Indian Wells..
Miami. Lindsay wasn't there. I think it's quite disrespective
to Venus and Jenn giving LD a easy road as a seed.

If there's a Williams vs Williams final- so what. I don't want
to see players get a free ride to the semi's because they didn't
need to play their toughest opponent I want a real grand slam.
Let's have the world's best - no free rides.

Speaking of free rides. Hingis and her WC might just back fire.
Has she even considered that the first round opponent might
be Venus, Serena, Jenn, or Lindsay?

Even though Hingis is a wildcard, she will get seeded according to her ranking.

At the moment she would be the #9 seed.

Unless the US Open decides to move her up a bit, which I doubt as she is not American.

Even if Hinigis is a WC into the the Open, she will be sedded by her ranking!! so she will never have to play lindsay or Venus nor Serena in the first round!! :)

Moving Hingis up? Come on now? What about Daniela or
Kim or Justine?

This is what the seedings should look like.

1) Serena
2) Venus
3) Jenn
*4) LD (courtesy of the USTA- a semi free ride)
5) Dokic - (Worked her little butt off this season)
6) Kim (She can still play decent tennis, right?)
7) Justine (Still better than Hingis nowadays)
8) Amelie (Now a force)
9) Daniela (She won Indian Wells- that's gotta count)
10) Seles (she's not dead yet)

Hingis should be somewhere from 11- 16; but not higher
than Chanda Rubin who actually won a hardcourt title this
year!!

babsi

I only think it is a very slim chance that they move Hingis up.

My view on seedings is that they should stick sorely to rankings.

And I defintely don't think the USTA would move Monica down to #10, and if they did that and if I waw Monica I would not play the US Open.
