Flavia's been regaining her form, so that match will be tough.
Hopefully, Nicole's cold settles down and she's not too tired and she'll be able to do well with this draw. :)

Hey! I think Nicole is in a great shape:cool: Flavia is a though opener, but we will see. I watched the lst matches of Nicole on TV, she impressed me a lot, i think she is even better as in the middle of the year before her injury and illness. She nearly beat Justine, but she had no luck in this match!

I'm going to be at the tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday; cheering for her. Perhaps i post some photo from Linz.
I hope Nicole wins this tournament. That would be great.
The draw isn't very easy but like i said before she's in grat shape.

Considering the circumstances I think Nicole could (should) win this tournament. Her along with Henin and Golovin benefits from having a shorter season due to injuries, personal issues or illness and are the in-form players right now while rest of the tour is already tired after a long season and suck. Unless she self-destroys like last year in Zurich she should be a favourite in semis should both her and Golovin make it. Naturally I wish Nicole would play another particular player than Tatiana in semis, let us see what happens. :p
She really needs to break this loss in every semifinal at Tier I/II curse becausë that's the last thing which prevents her from reaching a better status in many people's eyes.

Vaidisova overcomes nerves in Linz

LINZ, Austria (AP) -- Fifth seed Nicole Vaidisova battled her way past Flavia Pennetta in the first round of the Generali Ladies tournament, winning 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) on Wednesday.

Nicole Vaidisova had to come from behind to defeat Italy's Flavia Pennetta in the Linz event.

The Czech teenager, who reached the semifinals of the Zurich Open last week, made 47 unforced errors and converted only three of 16 break points.

"Flavia is hard to beat, so I am proud that I won," the 18-year-old Vaidisova said. "I'd never played before in this arena and had troubles adapting to the circumstances."

A break in the opening game was enough for Pennetta to win the first set, but Vaidisova -- who also defeated the Italian at this year's U.S. Open -- had two breaks in the second to pull even.

The world No. 14th lost to love while serving for the match at 5-4, but wrapped up victory in the tiebreaker to set up a second-round clash with Austrian wild card Yvonne Meusberger.

The winner of that match will play fourth seed Dinara Safina in the quarterfinals after the Russian beat Italy's Karen Knapp 6-2 6-2 in her second-round tie on Wednesday.

The Czech teenager made 47 unforced errors and converted only three of 16 break points.
This is Nicole's problem: She needs many BPs to close out a set/match. So it's more difficult to win when playing against other top players.

Vaidisova Outdoes Pennetta; Chakvetadze, Safina Win

LINZ, Austria - Nicole Vaidisova was amongst the winners at the General Ladies Linz on Wednesday, willing her way past Flavia Pennetta in a nail-biter as the first round came to a close and the second round began at the Tier II event.

In a first round clash, No.5 seed Vaidisova outduelled Pennetta, a wildcard in this week's draw, 46 63 76(4). After they split sets, the crowd was treated to one of the tightest sets of the tournament thus far - 58 minutes to be exact, with Pennetta rallying back from 4-2 down only to lose in a tie-break.

"She played a great first set; I was a little tired, but in the end I was able to pull it out," Vaidisova said. "It's easy to win when you're playing great but winning the ones where you're not playing that great helps you much more in the future."

Vaidisova has had her share of setbacks this season - sitting out the lead-up to Roland Garros with a wrist a right wrist injury then missing most of the summer hardcourt season due to a viral illness - but since the indoor swing began she has picked up right where she left off, reaching the quarterfinals of Moscow and the semifinals of Zürich, and now winning her Linz opener.

"I started the season really well but then I started getting injured and sick too," Vaidisova said. "I think I could have made it to Madrid but when you play nine or 10 tournaments it's tough. At this point, I'm just happy to be out there. I could've been done for the season after Wimbledon. Tennis-wise it has been a good year, but health-wise it sucked. Next year, the No.1 priority is going to be my health."

Pennetta, who was just three points from winning the match in the tie-break, had won 13 of her last 16 matches coming into Linz, including her last five in a row at Bangkok, where she won her first title of the year.

Hantuchova, Vaidisova, Schnyder advance to quarterfinals

The Associated Press
Thursday, October 25, 2007

LINZ, Austria: Nicole Vaidisova beat Yvonne Meusburger 6-3, 6-1 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies.

The fifth-seeded Vaidisova had seven aces and was in control throughout.

"I kept my concentration well and that's why I didn't get in trouble against Yvonne," said Vaidisova, who will play fourth-seeded Dinara Safina on Friday.

Fellow seed Vaidisova enjoyed an even smoother passage into the last eight, seeing off local favorite Yvonne Meusburger in less than an hour. There was little to separate the two players in the opener, but in the seventh game the Czech teenager secured the vital break of serve before comfortably holding out to take a one set to love lead. From here, despite the partisan crowd at the Intersport Arena Linz, the Austrian wildcard could do nothing to stem the tide and soon after succumbed to a 63 61 defeat.

"I think I played better than in the first round," Vaidisova said. "In the second set I was starting to find my range and with every set and every match I win, I get more confidence and hopefully I can keep it going in my match against Dinara [Safina]."

Meeting Hantuchova in Saturday's semifinals will be the No.5 seed, Vaidisova. The Czech teenager has been in fine form during the European indoor season and her impressive 63 76(7) win over No.4 seed Dinara Safina sees her through to a second consecutive semifinal - she fell to Justine Henin in the final four of Zürich last week. Vaidisova made a flying start to her quarterfinal clash, securing an early service break and closing out the set soon after without too much difficulty. The second set was considerably closer, but despite holding a set point at 7-6 in the tie-break Safina could not capitalize and two points later double faulted to hand Vaidisova a place in the next round.

"The second set was really close and I think it all came down to who handled the pressure better," Vaidisova said." I think I was perhaps a little better at controlling my nerves and I'm happy I managed to win such a close tie-break. I served for the set twice and so I was a little disappointed not to win earlier, but she [Safina] played some great tennis and deserves a lot of credit, but thankfully I managed to get over the finish line eventually."

There's a new article on the Linz website about the matches planned for today and those from yesterday.
I'm not german, but i understand this & that ..

Basically it seems that Hantuchova is very popular over there, a complete Intersport arena was sold out for her match yesterday against
Alona Bondarenko (with over 5000 visitors). Also in there something about Nicole who kept the upperhand in a quite exciting match
against Dinara Safina. 6:3, 7:6 (9/7). Finalizing with the cat & mouse game that Patty Schnyder with russian Anna Chakvetadze played,
apparently she had to make way for Patty's semi final within only 39 minutes of play, end score was 6-1 6-0.
Chakvetadze told the press afterwards that she felt this was her worst game of the season, that se moved badly & she almost slept at
that place.

The article can be found here: http://www.generali-ladies.at/presse/news5_185.php

You really think that Nicole does everything better than Daniela? She has bigger FH, that's for sure, her serve is also better. Nicole is a ball basher when Daniela is clearly not, she mixes up her game a lot, not to mention her good volleying skills. All Nicole does is hitting the ball as hard as she can, well at least most of the time. And look at Daniela's techi\nique, she hits the ball really clean. Actually she surprised me today because she played few dropshops, I can't remember when was the last time she hit a dropshot.

What irritates me in her that there are matches when she comes out on court without any plan, it happens against the top players. And she needs to hold her nerves because it only helps her opponents

When Nicole grows up, she will be big and finally she'll win tierII's and maybe someday even a Slam. She's like Sharapova and Maria has won 2Slams, then why not Nikki?

Oct 27th, 2007, 08:50 PM
^^ Nicole has improved her game and added another dimension in it. I too used to think she was only a ballbasher but her recent matches convinced me it's no longer the case. Yes, she relies mainly on big serve and hard strokes from the baseline, but everyone relies on their biggest weapons. She has improved her volleying skills which are now quite good, certainly much better than Ivanovic's, Jankovic's or Chakvetadze's out of this world and also has added backhand and forehand slices into her arsenal which help her a lot in defense.
I agree with the line about tactics though, Nicole really needs a clear gameplan for these matches. She did it against Serena in Moscow where she was hitting her serves consistently on Serena's body. But that was more an exception I think. Maybe she underestimated Daniela? Her biggest problem is her head however. When she led 4-2 in the third she couldn't hit a first serve to save her life, Daniela utterly crushed all her 2nd serves and broke back. As for the MP in 11th game, Nicole couldn't do anything about it as Daniela hit a big first serve winner. Today Daniela was able to hit a big serve when she needed, unlike Nicole who even made a DF in the tiebreak. Daniela also was more disciplined in depth of her groundstrokes and didn't give many short balls to Nicole which she could attack. Daniela coped very well with the pressure putted on her serve because she served after Nicole in both 2nd and 3rd set.

I am a little bit sad that Nicole still has to live with the "Semisova" thing but of course I couldn't cheer for her today. I am sure it's only a matter of time for her to overcome this obstacle.

I'M SO SAD!!! sry for Dani fans I called her bitch, it isn't truth but I would do call it about every player Nicole lost to today.. because it's annoying how Nicole can't win any semifinal on big tour, hope 2008 will be better...

I also think Nicole played really badly tactically today.. she should serve more to Daniela's backhand because Daniela just can't hit so good shots and returns on her backhand :(

Another disappointing loss for Nicole. :( She was on the verge of winning it, up 4-1 in the third set and needing only a break point to win the match, but once again she let it slip away by playing too tight and one dimentional. Then she practically handed the match to Dani in the tiebreaker when the serve deserted Nicole. This is another tough loss that is becoming all too typical for Nicole. She obviously has the ability to win big matches, but she still isn`t quite there mentally. That is something i like to see her work on. Anyway i hope that she learn from this loss and bounce back in Quebec.

This is by far the worst loss of her season. This tops the Krajicek loss by miles.

She's playing a girl who she owns, to finally get over her poor record in SF and finally reach a Tier II final.

And she chokes.

She isn't going to get any better chances to breakthrough than this.
