Zurich is only the 10th time since 1990 that a WTA event has had the top 4 playing. When you take into account all the tier 1s and season ending championships, that's pretty surprising.

Majors don't count as WTA events, do they? I assumed they were always officially ITF tournaments. Same with the YEC.

It would be interesting to see when the other occasions were. Off the top of my head I would guess Miami and Filderstadt have at least had the top 4 playing on one occasion. Can't think of many others (does our resident statistical expert AnnaK_4Ever know?!!)

Miami had the top 4 in:

2006 (1 - Mauresmo, 2 - Clijsters, 3 - Henin, 4 - Sharapova)
2003 (1 - S Williams, 2- V Williams, 3 - Clijsters, 4 - Henin)

Indian Wells had the top 4 in:

2001 (1 - Hingis, 2 - Davenport, 3 - V Williams, 4 - Seles)
