The National Indoor event is argubaly the most difficult tournament to win given that invites are only given to the champion/finalists of the ITA Regionals and quarterfinalists from the All-American event. The remaning spots are wildcards which go by pre-season rankings. In other words, only the players who are playing the best at the moment are given entry into the tournament. All of the regional tournaments are being played this weekend.

Thanks! Also, I found this, about one of the wildcards http://www.athletics.armstrong.edu/news/wt101407.html

I think that Pandzic won this last year and got all the way to the final, before losing to Cohen.

I forgot about that. Yeah Pandzic was at Fresno Pacific, a NAIA school, when she won the title last year. Jelena played for Fresno State, a Divison I school, previously but then was ruled ineligible. The NAIA schools are more laxed about eligibility requirements.

The Northwest Regional Championships draw has been posted (its in the 2nd post). Its rather unusual to see that Babos is playing, usually players that qualify at the All-American tournament opt out of regionals. That being said, she has an extremely cush draw until the quarterfinals where she should meet Petuhkova/Deason.

Big first round match between Cossou from Cal and Venise Chan of Washington. The winner is a big darkhorse in addition to Jennifer Heisner who was a top junior (ranked as high as No. 16 in ITF Juniors) but went AWOL last year even though she was on the USF team. I think she may have had to sit out a year for eligibility reasons like Falcon who did the year prior to last.

urklerlay, Hodzic is not playing singles but is teaming with Yen in the doubles draw.

The Southwest Regional, West Regional, and East Regional singles draws have been added to post #2.

The West Regional features USC and UCLA for those who are interested in those teams. Oddly enough Nelson is not entered into the West Regional but she could receive a WC into the National Indoors based on pre-season ranking. Although that remains unclear given that she retired in her only fall match.

All regional draws are in post #2 save for the central region which no one really cares about anyways.

Quite a few upsets at the Northwest Regional. Bojana Bobusic from Cal who normally doesn't even play in the starting singles line-up had a very impressive run stopped in the semifinals in three sets to Nguyen. I wonder if she can sneak into the Indoors given her wins over Burdette and Gloria.

McVeigh from Stanford had a couple nice wins over seeded players Kusano and Kucerkova. I'm surprised to see Visico from Cal in the finals. She's definitely been efficent, not having dropped a set. But good for her as she earns a spot in the Indoors for the first time. She'll have a hard time there given that's she a counter puncher. But she'll have her hands full with Nguyen tomorrow. I always felt that Visico was placed way too low in the line-up, which stifled her development in college.

R32
Rowe (Fresno State) def. Durkin (Stanford) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2
Bobusic (Cal) def. Burdette (Stanford) 6-2, 6-0

Quarters
Bobusic (Cal) def. Gloria (Fresno State) 6-4, 6-2
Petuhkova (Fresno State) def. Babos (Cal) 6-2, 6-3

I'm most impressed with Duke's Zslinszka and Nze who've both reached the final and will play against each other tomorrow.

They might not even play the final. A lot of the time, especially in finals of tournaments, when teammates face each other they abandon the finals. I don't undertand it. Is it so that they can catch their flight home? Or does the coach decide that its not worth it for them to play seeing how they play each other everyday? Or is it more do to rankings so that neither will get a loss?

Well in the Midwest they definitely did not play the final, between Northwestern's Rose and Murray. It seems that they did the same thing with the all-Duke final. I actually think that this idea is kind of nice, as both players have already qualified.

Actually, I just read this on the Duke website:
Duke’s two freshmen, Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka, will square off for the singles championship at a time and date to be determined later this week.

While I understand why they would rather play the match at home, its also a little weird since the match at home won't really simulate tournament play. There's also another all Georgia Tech final in their regional between Miller and McDowell and the all Baylor final of Broosova and Ormond.

Apparently tomorrow is when the full Indoor list will be out including WCs. I was reading earlier that if you don't make the quarters of your regional you are considered ineligible for a WC. That would include Burdette and Durkin from Stanford, Srebovic and Alexander from Florida, Lin from UCLA, Corovic from Texas. Its a pretty extensive list of highly ranked players who didn't make the quarters of their regional. It'll be interesting to see if the ITA goes along with this criteria. Currently WC selections are No. 3 Gloria, No. 23 Flower, No. 27 Newman, and then after than it goes to the high 30s. Meaning the ITA could potentially skip over top 30 players for players below No. 40.

Also Susie Babos played the regional despite qualifying already because she felt that last year when she didn't play the regional she didn't have enough match play going into the Indoors (and subsequently lost first round).

Georgia Tech is just unstoppable, they should have at least 4 girls in the Indoors, probably 5. They're really starting to shape up as the new college tennis dynasty. Word is they just snagged Rebecca Marino to play for them next year (the official word comes out tomorrow but I did some snooping around). Apparently its suppose to be between California, Georgia Tech, and Stanford. I would love it if she went to Cal, seeing how they have 4 scholarships avaliable (Babos, Visico cohort leaving). But I'm 99% sure its Georgia Tech.

And with USC and UCLA have subpar performances so far this fall, it looks like Georgia Tech is going to repeat this year and next year as well.

The wildcards have been announced, although I think they made a mistake seeing how they need one more WC.

9 players from AA + 16 regional finalists - 2 (McDowell, Miseviciute qualified at AA) + 7 WCs (listed below) + 1 (ITA College Champ) = 31

I think they forgot to add Catherine Newman from Vanderbilt.

At-Large Women's Singles
Gloria, Fresno State
Flower, Georgia Tech
Marand, North Carolina
Mesterova, Loyola Marymount
Ciobanu, Notre Dame
Striplin, Georgia Tech
Mosolova, Northwestern (ITA Wild Card)

Alternate List
1. Zoricic, W&M
2. Petukhova, Fresno State
3. Schmitt, Marshall
4. Fink, USC
5. Munch-Soogard, TCU
6. Goia, Furman

I was trying to figure out the last time that Stanford sent only one player to the Indoors. Nguyen will be the only Stanford representative. I find it a little strange that the Stanford team keeps on saying that people shouldn't worry about their subpar performances in the fall. They say that its due to the fact that they just started practicing (Stanford starts later then most schools) and other teams have been practicing for a month. While I understand that this could be a factor and the same time they have always started late and still have had good results in the fall. The argument would hold better if Stanford had a history of bad fall performances.

I can't find the draws earlier than 1998. But I venture its been over 10 years that this has happened, maybe even since the inception of the Indoors in 1984.

That's a great committment. I always get upset that Cal never gets any of the best US players. I don't know why they don't get better US players. I think I am hearing rumors that Stephany Chang might committ to Cal. They do seem to have a corner on French players (Ravelojoana, Ilcinkas, Cossou) in successive years. Seriously, some school should pay me to do their recruiting.
