Hey Guys,

I made it to Zurich!!!

I had so much fun in Moscow. I ended up going out to a club in Russia that plays hip hop music! Can u believe??? It was tons of fun. I loooove to dance it’s one of my fav past times.... I like watching the videos and learning new moves from the dancers. Then I try them when I go out!! Haha I'm not that good but I really do my best... It’s tons of fun.

Anyways the club was fun and I had to catch a flight at 7am and I had to leave my hotel by 4:15 because the airport was so far a way. It was good we left early because the lady that was doing the tickets and checking us in was such a complete jerk. I mean she kept telling me my CARRY ON was too heavy!!! Can u believe? So what did I do? I had to remain calm. I was ready to leave Russia so I knew if I wanted to get out I was gonna have to be calm... So I kept calm and told her I could not lighten my load (my dogs were in there). She told me that was not her concern. "Not her concern" and I had to lighten the load. She kept telling me that this was not her concern and that was not her concern, so finally I told her "look I don't think CONCERN is the opportune word. The costumer is always right u can't use this word. It’s not the right word." She did not say that word again. Thank God because y’all don't know me I'm from Compton and I was "this" close from showing her what it’s like in Compton. But if I did that I would not have made it to Zurich where I am now....

Ok I did not go to sleep I went to the airport and now I have been up 36 hrs. I am so tired. I'm sorry there is no new video diary guys I have not been able to send one from overseas. But as soon as I can get back I will send another and more! I know y’all miss my face lol!!!

Ok well I'll ttyl and keep reading the blogs! I love u all

Definitely a funny blog entry. Hope she was also a bit self-aware about her diva-ness at the airport. It really isn't the official's concern how you get your carry-on to be within limits. Also: I wish it weren't so, but that customer-is-always-right maxim doesn't apply outside the US. And even here it isn't all that consistent. Can't bring that attitude to a 7-11 in the Bronx or a Liquor Store in Compton. Come to think of it, why is Rena frontin' like she knows how to bring it from the ghetto? She better watch herself, or she'll go down like Brenda in that Dave Chappelle skit... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Nq6e9fb3I

I don't think that "customer is always right" thing in this case applies in Russia, the US or anywhere in the world. There are safety concerns about carry-ons and that's why they should be within certain limits. It's not a matter of serving the customer. Serena's attitude here is completely out of line.

Anyway, those last few blogs have been quite embarrassing. And check your spelling Serena. :o

7-11's in the Bronx?? You don't know the Bronx very well there is like one 7-11 in the Bronx, We have bodegas and little corner stores run by Arabians. Trust if you have lived in the ghetto at some point in your life, there is a situation or two when it will come out trust me.  :armed: :armed: All that aside Serena was just joking around, it was a cute blog.

Hey guys, it's Serena here! Now, as some of you out there may know already, I like to do everything that my sister Venus does. Us lil' sisters are quite the jealous type! Well the point I'm making is that a couple of weeks ago she wrote a blog (which I'm sure you all read with great interest) for our very own Sony Ericsson WTA Tour website, and this week it's my turn! I can't believe they convinced me to do it, but here I am and I would like to share my experiences with all the fans out there.

Well, I'm fresh from my trip to Moscow; can you believe that I'm playing my third event in a row? I can't! I don't think I've ever done that in my career before, but I'm feeling good and determined to make a good run at the end of the year since I hardly played this summer. I had not been to Moscow in 10 years... Can you believe I've been around that long? I can't, I still feel like a teenager... Well, nonetheless, it has been 10 years since the last time I was there - scary. Moscow is an interesting place. I hung out a bit with Kuzzie, saw some interesting things, none of which I can really talk about here, but for sure I had a lot of fun there, played some good matches and picked up some valuable points (yeah!)

For all of those that didn't follow, I got to the finals there and now I'm in Zürich, Switzerland, where the chocolate is oh sooooo good - but shush, don't tell anyone that I ate two today. That's my limit, I swear, otherwise I'll be on the practice court much longer than my hour and 15. I haven't been at the tournament here in probably 10 years as well. I can't wait to make my long awaited return to action. I have been having so much fun playing this fall. My first match is against the tricky but talented Patty Schnyder - make sure you tune into the live scoring!!!

The highlight of the past couple of weeks has been qualifying for Madrid, which we announced today. That's so cool. I feel as though I should be there. Now, with a lil' work and dedication I've made it offically to Madrid. I never would have thought that back in January before I played Australia, and I'm really proud of myself and the strides I've made to get back to this level after two years - no easy feat. I hope my little girls (aka quadrupeds - dogs!), Jackie and Laura, who have been keeping me company, are equally as proud!

P.S. I have also relaunched my website: serenawilliams.com. It's way more slick and up to date compared to the previous incarnation. You guys have to go check it out because it's hilarious. I also write a relationship blog there as well... Where do I get the time?? It's a long story - an important one - but one we will have to talk about!

Well it's late here in Zürich and I would love to write more but I'm a bit tired and I have to play tomorrow. I'm so sleepy, I haven't slept in 36 hours (the life of a jet-setting tennis player is not all it's cracked up to be...)

In fairness to the airline employee, English may not have been her first language and "concern" may not be offensive when used in Russian.

I like Serena's blog because she's just being herself as opposed to patronizing the public. As for typos or grammatical errors, no biggie. Just because Serena's rich and famous doesn't mean she isn't human. :)

ZÜRICH, Switzerland - It has been another impressive year for Serena Williams, winning her eighth Grand Slam title in Australia and her fourth Sony Ericsson Open crown in Miami. Fresh off her third final of the year in Moscow she adds player blogging to her long list of achievements, bringing us along to Zürich as she plays for the Zürich Open.

I agree with you here.

It's not like the rules concerning flights are so "light" in the USA. It's not as if you can take whatever you want on a plane on US flights
Isn't it the job of the employer to tell the passenger his/her bags go against the rules, and yes, it is none of her concerns, it is Serena's

and no, I'm not a hater  . This is just stupid talk by Serena. She sounds like Paris Hilton. Also, very patronising. "Can you believe?"

It was rude on the part of the employee to say it's not her "concern". That is rude and a better choice of words are more professional even it if isn't her concern.

Give me a break. She was in Russia....English in Russia isn't exactly great? The employee probably meant that it's not her responsibility to make sure that Serena's bag was within the weight limit. You have to understand, when English is not someone's first language they're gonna use whatever word that comes to mind to get their point across, rude or not.

I wonder how many players get ticked off at airports(as much as they travel), but we never hear about it because they never write about it?

From an article circa 1999:

<quote>
Lindsay Davenport had to argue with airline staff to be allowed to take her tennis rackets on a flight to Melbourne last week because no one recognised the world number one.

Davenport told reporters at the Australian Open on Friday that she had asked a Qantas airline employee just why her closest rival had been able to board her flight with rackets in hand.

"Well, Martina Hingis needs her racket," the airline woman said, according to Davenport.

The Australian Open top seed said she had to haggle with staff from the Australian airline to allow her to take her rackets on a business class flight from Sydney to Melbourne after she beat Hingis in the Sydney International last Saturday.

World number three Alex Corretja of Spain suffered the same indignity.

"The lady said, 'Oh, your rackets are too big. You can't take them on the flight'," Davenport told reporters, recounting what she said was her strangest experience since becoming the world number one last year.

"She didn't know who Corretja and I were, and I'm like saying 'hey'. We got into the biggest fight with the lady. We almost got like a fine or something."

In the end, Davenport and Corretja smuggled their rackets on board. "But it wasn't easy," she said.

Serena was clearly frustrated and no matter what country you are in people hate getting help up at the airport i got held up for 2 days this summer in baltimore because of weather and the airline told me and the 7 others i was traveling with "its not their concern what we do for the next 2 days" so i can understand her frustration.

also she was taking dogs! you can take dogs on a plane if they meet a certain requirement she obviously got them there so why wouldn't she be able to take them out the same way.... you sound like one of those idiots at airports that cause a person to catch a case i swear!

What the hell do you want the airline to do because they're not able to take off due to weather? Give you a free 5 star hotel room until the weather clears up?

No i didnt tell u all the details we were delayed because of weather after the airline booked our connecting flight so that by the time we got to the airport the other plane would be gone and they said its not their concern so by the time a flight that could make it came along no flights were allowed to take off so whos fault is it?? and i wouldnt ask anyone to put me up in any hotel because of weather issues i know they aren't God but for them to schedule are connecting flight so that we would miss it even if we're on time is ridiculous

Hey guys,
As I am sure you know I had to withdraw from my match in Zürich. If there is one thing I hate it's giving up or quitting. It is simply not in my vocabulary. So my mom told me I should have stopped after the first set and I could have gotten worse but I felt as though maybe people would think, "She didn't even try."
People who don't know me that well don't realize that I'm a typical Libra and I'm actually quite sensitive. I guess I need to stop thinking about what other people think of me and just do what is best. Well, "What happened?" I'm sure you are asking. I strained my right adductor. If you all followed the Moscow tournament my right leg was strapped because I had some tight muscles. So the doc said that it was me overcompensating for so long that my adductor was doing too much work. Blah blah blah... Injuries are always frustrating for any athlete to deal with.
So with that said, I was really upset because I've always wanted to win Zürich. I made a promise to myself that I was going to play Stuttgart, Moscow and Zürich back at Wimbledon and wanted to do everything to keep that promise. I guess I pushed myself too far. Heck, I had my ticket leaving for next Monday!!!
With that being said I decided not to abandon the blog. I like writing and even if I'm not writing so much about Zürich I can still write about my progress as well as things I am up to. One thing I wanted to talk about on my blog is my 'Saying of the Day' to hopefully help people of all ages out. Today's comes from a special friend that I enjoyed so much I want to share it with you:

Confront your fears and they will disappear. Always remember that bad weather looks worse through a window.

So whatever it is that you want to be or do, don't be afraid to do it or go for it. Sometimes I want to meet new people but I'm afraid they won't like me or they'll think crazy of me. These are my fears... So today and from now on I will try to confront people and talk to them. I'm sure they will find me charming (I hope!)
Let's see... I hope you guys enjoy reading the blog and I will "see" you tomorrow!

When I first read it I thought it was a troll post trying to make Serena look bad. :o I'm surprised she would talk that way to someone just doing their job, how is saying something "isn't my concern" being rude? How else are you supposed to say that?

To me it's rude, because most of the time, at least here in the States before 911, there was a such thing called customer service. They would try to help find a way to accomodate that was within regulations, as they realize that most passengers do not know all FAA rules.

Oh haven't you heard? Serena isn't supposed to have any emotions or reactions to anything, like any other person. No frustrations, no anger, no fear, no hurt, no happiness, no nothing. And, she certainly isn't supposed to express them publicly, either in writing or verbally because she will certainly be seen as being arrogant, spoiled, etc. you name it.

I just can't figure out what this 'diary thing' has to do with tennis.
It is more suitable to post it in the fan-zone so you will not have bad reactions of non-fans.
It is after all the GM part of this message board where everyone can post his or her opinion. ;)

If you or others don't want to see the diverse opinion about Serena than stop posting threads about her in the General section of the forum. Serena, like any other tennis player has her own section where all her and mostly her fans can post charming messages about her. But, if someone is willing to post it to the general public than be wise enough to respect a different point of view.
