Obviously, this thread was inspired by the 'Capriati vs Davenport' thread. I found the answers there curious. And since the same three slams vs one and career high #1 vs career high #2 rank, Olympic Gold medal, etc, occurs in this comparison, I'm curious about how people will vote.

And 'greater does NOT mean' who had better career accomplishments'. Wish it did, but that logic, unexamined, can lead to sme curious conclusions. Was Chris O'Neil really 'greater' that Mary Joe Fernandez? Most would say not, but O'Neil won a slam, and Fernandez didn't.

What the hell is going on with these threads? How can you compare a player 70's - 80's with a 90's player??? They played in differents eras!

Yeah but Davenport did not really come to her own until late 1996 and really emerged in 1997. She was known for being a choker and she was still carrying most of her then almost 200 pounds for most of 1993-1994. However Davenport was already stepping inside the top ten by late 1994. She ended top 6 in 1996.

Davenport.
Was year-end #1 four times (1998, 2001, 2004, 2005).
Had a higher winning percentage than Sabatini (unlike Capriati who is well behind Gaby in that department).

Davenport defeated Graf in a Wimbledon final the same year Graf won the French Open.

Sabatini defeated Graf in a US Open final the same year Graf won the Australian Open. And when Graf was the clear #1.

Advantage Gaby!

Sabatini played in 1984-96, Davenport in 1991-2006.

Yeah but Sabatini was going downhill very fast in 93-95, only a shadow of her former past. Davenport "emerged" in 97 because Sabatini was gone, Graf was injured, Sanchez over-the-hill and Williams sisters still too young.:p

Yes and Sabatini retired in 1996.

Anyway, the answer is clearly Lindsay - I don't have the same view on her as I do with Capriati, Lindsay has proven herself in every way possible.

It's not a slight on my fave Gaby who had an illustrious career as well.

Why is there a comparison? the answer is quite obvious isn't it?
The outright winner is davenport.

more titles, slams, etc.I mean i think she leads in every department except their H-Hs which is unfortunate because she really only became the davenport we know today in 97.

Comparing their games, I say Davenport. The only edge I give to Sabatini is better instincts at the net, otherwise, it's all Lindsay.

really not true. Davenport came into her own because she decided she wanted to be a professional tennis player rather than a girl with a lot of talent but no work ethic. As soon as Davenport was able to move faster than an 80 year woman in decent shape she became a world class player capable of beating anyone.
