When the updated YEC race totals come out tomoow, the points standings for those who have not qualified will lokk like this:

5. Serena Williams - 2,766 points
6. Anna Chakvetadze - 2,628
7. Venus Williams - 2,470
8. Maria Sharapova -2,431
------------------------------------------------------
9. Danilea Hantuchova - 2, 096
10. Elena Dementieva - 2,022
11. Marion Bartoli- 1,989

Of the 4 who as poised to qualify, only Serena is sheduled to play in Zurich (Maria and Anna withdrew; Venus was not scheduled to play). Should she well there, she will qualify for the YEC. I don't know if Serena, Anna, Dnaiela, Marion or Elelna are playing in Linz the following week, but Anna should qualify between this week and theend of next week. Should Elena, Marion and Daniela play well down the stretch, there is a slight possibility that they could knock both Venus and Maria out of the YEC race, but it is more likely Venus will qualify because Daniela, Elena and Marion are 374, 448 and 481 points behind Venus respectively and they would have to win Zurich and Linz to do that and from the peliminary draw from Zurich (which will change with Maria's withdrawl), that doesn't seem likely. It is more likely that Maria would be the odd woman out becuase since she has apparently ended her 2007 season by withdrawing from Zurich and Linz, either Daniela, Marion or Elena can pass her for the final YEC spot.

Marion is not completely out too ;).

It was said in other Thread that Elena D. will not play in Linz, so she need to win Zurich to be in YEC. (But Ithink players can/may change her mind, she and others, if they have a chance to be qualified)

How many points did Marion earn by playing Zurich (I can't pull up the updated rankings thread)? If she earned at least 60, then I will admend my post.

I think she will pick up Linz if she loses early in Zurich, particulary if she knows she has a chance to qualify.

i think that Elena will take a wild card in Linz
i over heard her talking with Dany, about taking over Venus and Maria

Elena to win in Zurich over Dani
and for Dani to win Over Elena in Linz and Quebec...
as long as Lindsay stay out of the way

In Moscow, you mean? If so, she won 60pts with a R2 run.

Yes, I meant Moscow. Thank you.:)

Since that is the case, I amend my post.

Would be great if Elena played Quebec City.

The thing is that Elena does not want really to qualify. she will not make any effort for this. Actually, I'm sure that she would love to end the season right here right now.

Her problem is that she will have to fly to Madrid as alternate but for sure she will not make any special effort in Zurich.

Elena's rivals in Zurich Fran, Serena and Sveta, she may lose also if she don't want to go to Madrid...

BTW, Will 2 alternates (ALTs) need to go or just one?

Is Maria gonna play the Championships even if she qualifies. Does she really have the confidence to go up against the Top 8 players?

Elena & Daniela have horrible draws coming up - they won't make it very far i believe.

I think this year the 9th player will get in because I don't see Maria going even if she manages to qualify in the last place....

I has tried to do the math again, I hope I'm right. When you add Marion in the List

also Peer, Safina and Vaidisova have a chance to take over Maria or Venus. (Even VERY unlikely, but still) ;)

if Dementieva refuses to play Linz, she is a fool.

Well, without a good run in Zurich, it's useless.

I honestly believe that after winning Moscow Lena is not so concerned about the YEC. I think she would be happy with winning 1 or 2 matches in Zurich then ending the year and focusing on 08. Hantuchova will likely overtake Sharapova at this point considering i doubt Sharapova will play again in 07.

335 in 3 tournaments still won't be easy for her

this attitude won't take her to the slam title!

LOL your right, i used the wrong words. I kinda meant that its likely Sharapova won't even play the YEC

this attitude won't take her to the slam title!

Well running herself into the ground the last few years just to scrape into the YEC hasn't done her any good either or gotten her a slam title.

Anyway it would be fantastic if she could make it to the YEC this year, i think that would make her the only player to have played every YEC since 2000, is that some kind of record?

They were not added to the list becuase I don't they will be anywhere near 2000 points as of Monday.

Elena said after the match that she is not even thinking about Madrid and she will not play and win only for this. She just want to enjoy playing and the ranking or the championship is not so important for her right now.

i dont even think sharapova's going to play the YEC. Shoulder issues. she dropped out of Zurich and possibly Linz (both in which she's the defending champion)

She withdrew from Linz also.

How can they make 350-400 points until the YEC? The only way Hantochova/Bartoli/Dementieva play the YEC is if Maria withdraws. Otherwise, I don't see any of them winning Zurich or Linz.

Here are all the scenarios I can come up with by which Daniela can make the YEC. Note that she needs 335 points to tie Sharapova, and as you'll see each point is huge:
1) 1R in Zurich, win Linz, SF Quebec City (341).
1) 2R in Zurich, F in Linz, F Quebec City (350).
2) 2R in Zurich, win Linz, any points at Quebec City (336).
3) QF in Zurich, SF in Linz, F Quebec City (335). // What's the tiebreaker, this could happen.
4) QF in Zurich, SF in Linz, win Quebec City (375).
5) QF in Zurich, F in Linz, QF Quebec City (335). // Tie again.
6) SF in Zurich, F in Linz (385).
7) SF in Zurich, SF in Linz, QF in Quebec City (355).

In short, she needs to beat Safina in Zurich at least, play well at Linz, and probably enter and do well at Quebec City. But this is doable which is more than I would have hoped for just last week at this time. If any of these scenarios come to pass, it is essentially mathematically impossible for anyone behind Daniela to catch her.

What's important for daniela is that she HAS to make the zurich quarters otherwise it's gonna be really really hard to surpass sharapova.

And it will also depend on how elena will play in zurich AND if she will get a linz wildcard. Lena needs a win in zurich OR zurich final and linz semi to pass sharapova.

It will probably all be between daniela and elena because there's a good chance sharapova will withdraw from the YEC. We will know more after zurich.

Thanks for posting it dAnFan, it won't be as hard as I expected for them to qualify but it sure won't be easy and I wouldn't be surprise if Maria is still #8 by the YEC. The most consistant will qualify and so far Daniela has been playing very well this fall ;)

you're right. If daniela happens to draw lindsay early in quebec city she's done for, she won't surpass sharapova unless she gets to the quarters in Zurich and wins linz. But what's more important for her right now is to try and stay ahead of elena.

Dementieva just got the biggest title and victory over another player of her entire career today. She mentioned in Stuttgart as well she isn't interested in Madrid and wants to take a long break. She doesn't quit events and she'll stay true to her commitment in Zürich but she will just swing freely and will see what happen.

Much more than likely Hantuchova is in the YEC if Maria withdraws, regardless of what Daniela does. Bartoli and Dementieva will be the alternates. (All this if no one else withdraws other than Sharapova, if she even does withdraw.)
