ZURICH 07 - The Draw

13/10/2007:

Tennis queen Justine returns to Zurich Open for the first time in four years after illness and injury has kept her out of the European fall indoor season. It was in 2003 at Zurich where Justine was first crowned in her career as the #1 ranked player in the world. She also won the Zurich trophy that year. The debonair Belgian will begin her opening match on Wednesday or Thursday against Vera Zvonareva or a qualifier.

JH will play the winner of Vera Zvonareva or qualifier in the opening round. She may then face the winner of the Daniela Hantuchova, Dinara Safina, and Shahar Peer cluster in the quarterfinals. The semi-finals could be another battle with the winner of the Jelena Jankovic, Amelie Mauresmo, Nicole Vaidisova or even Marion Bartoli section of the draw

The names that standout on the bottom half of the draw are Elena Dementieva, Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Ana Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova, Patty Schynder and Tatiana Golovin

Catch Justine in sizzling action at the Zurich Open on Eurosport. The Tennis Channel in the States will air the semi-finals and final next weekend. International Ju fans can see matches on WTA broadcasters taped versions aired on later dates. Please check you local tv listings for specific times and days. Local match times are (CEST) Switzerland.

I don't know, it's late in the year, Number 1's in the bag, and she's probably tired...

If she gets to the final against Serena, I'm sure she'll bring it, but I'm afraid she may be looking past this tourny a tad toward YEC. :tape:

Plus Serena's in the final in Moscow. Do any of her fans really think she'll play Zurich??? I suppose her recent statements kind of obligate her to, but that's a lot of tennis in a short time for Serena.

Henin indicated after she played Stuttgart that she felt fresh. It appeared to me from her recent comments that her goal was to win her remaining tournaments this year and take a little time off before the Australian summer tour.

Indoor is not Henin's best surface, but her current motivation will likely push her to play her best, win or lose.

It will be interesting to see how her current form translates onto the indoor surfaces.

All the best to her and all the other players who are playing this late in the year!

I'm not saying I'll be surprised if she wins, only that it won't surprise me if she loses to, say, Jelena for the first time there. :tape:

Well you keep thinking Jankovic is going to win sooner or later, but when the match starts im like... 'Justine isnt going to lose here' I cant see anyone beating her really... maybe Serena could push her all the way but shes in such great form its hard to see her losing...

I hope you're right. Seriously, though, I think Jelena's more of a threat(not to mention a more immediate one, considering the draw) to Justine because she really has to maintain a consistently high level, both mentally AND physically, to beat her. That's asking a lot at this stage of the year, and like I said, there's no doubt in my mind that Justine's really got her sights on repeating as year-end champion. :hehehe: I REALLY hope she can pull THAT off!

Considering she's defeated Myskina, Mauresmo, Hingis and Sharapova indoors, I don't think it would matter too much.
