I can't see it. Is it someone just trying to find a flaw in Serena's game so they say that? Ot is it because she plays mainly from the baseline so they confuse her for some one who just ball bashes?

Ummm, sometimes her volleys do suck. She's not consistent. Didn't she lose a ton of points from at net against Justine at the USO?

doesn't everyone lose points at net? and why doesn't everyone talk about the way she vollied at the Miami final...or even at Australia..

Any REAL Serena fan knows this information already. But supertroll needs attention so it creates another thread as usual.:tape::lol:

Serena has good volleys, much better than the average non-doubles player. But she is a baseliner, in the main, so you don't often see them. Check out some of her old doubles video. That will give a better idea. She has a nice drop volley, and can volley effectively off both sides.

Why so much trouble vs Henin? Because Henin can do what was taught in the 1960's to combat net play. Use topspin on the passing shot to get it below the level of the net, so the player at net has to volley upward. It's used to be most good players could do that. Now, almost no one can. They certainly can hit with topspin, but not with the delicacy required to make the ball dip just as it crosses the net.

To answer the question in the thread title, (Why are people saying that Serena can't volley?) it's because a lot of Serena's critics don't watch her. Why would they? They don't enjoy seeing her play. Consequently, they are commenting from their preconcieved notions, not from Serena's actual play.

barring her sometimes suspect footwork, her volleys are the weakest part of her game. duh.

she's no sharapova, but she's no mauresmo either.

it's not a glaring weakness, but relatively speaking, it is weak compared to the rest of her game.

It was funny. In that match, she was dissed on her poor volleys after one screwed up one, and then she hit an excellent backhand volley a few points later.

I think her volleys are fine.

Serena is a better than average volleyer by WTA standards

like someone said, she is not as good as Mauresmo or also Justine, but she is better than Masha and most other Top 20 players. To be honest I consider Serena a better volleyer than Venus because Serena makes more of the low volleys that just kill Venus

I'll always remember the great defensive volley that Serena hit, when she was down MATCH POINT (!), off a wicked Kim Clijsters passing shot in the Aus Open 2003 semi. That volley won Serena a Grand Slam title. Anyone who says Serena cant volley should re-watch the 3rd set of that match

Are you talking about that announcer from the tennis channel? I can't remember her name...Katrina Adams or something? Yeah, she was all over Serena this morning in the Kuzy match. "It amazes me that Serena is such an inexperienced volleyer." Katrina must have said that about three times. Even i got tired of it...

Serena doesn't need anybody to defend her, her accomplishments speak for themselves. I mean, she's no

No, it's just that her volleys are FAR from good most of the time.

he volley technique is quite good. She just doesnt come to the net enough and when she does, its in desparation and off a bad approach or something. I think thats her problem. Her volleys aren't in the class of mauresmo's, henin's, hingis' or even venus' but they're pretty good however, if you look at other players e.g Jankovic, Golovin. Their volleys may not be very good but whenever they're coming in on their own terms, its always on the right ball and so they have the easiest voley possible instead of giving themselves a harder volley for no reason. Serena's volleys are better than their but its all about reading the court which of course henin, mauresmo, Jankovic, hingis, golovin do so well. Serena doesnt read the game as well and often gives herself a harder volley. Even Venus has (well had - at wimbly and US Open) begun to read the court and game better. Its never too late to change.

I think looking at her game you can't say she can't volley. She's certainly not awful, I've seen players a lot worse. That being said, she's not a natural (although I think Venus is a natural) and she's prone to a weird technique on the volley sometimes. She gets the job done a lot of times when she's up there, though.

This sums it up really.

There are much better volleyers out there which is a bit strange to consider given that Serena is usually around the top end of most lists of all other tennis skills.

All,

Corina was the one that called Serena an inexpirenced volleyer; which isn't a word = volleyer). She also took it upon herself to agree w/some of the mealie mouth pundits that often say that Serena thinks she can stay out of the game and then come back thinking she can compete/win. Not once did she attribute any of those absences to injuries. Besides - when is/was she suppose to re-enter on the tour? When she looks like one of the Olsen twins? It's like years ago, when she had been out for almost a year and then came back and won Miami.

I mean, I didn't get that comment, because she also stated during her remarks that Serena was not in the best of shape, had other outside interests and yada, so she (Serena) had some nerve showing up in Stuttgart and Moscow thinking she could compete - let alone win. Huh? And alas - she just beat the number two player.

Serena can volley. It's just that she doesn't do it consistently. Besides - she has won 9 Major doubles' titles. So, she can't be that bad. Most times playing singles, she doesn't get that much practice. And Corina has won..................?
