Hopefully this means Flavia is BACK to her good old level! :D

i'd suggest it means she's gone to another level beyond that.

i'm so happy to be a supporter of Flavia right now. Very proud of the way she's turned things around. might have to pop over to Italy in the off season and make a move on her.

Well done Flavia :yeah:! Great fight!

Bad performance from Venus, she cannot return well a first serve :tape:. Too many dumb errors on crucial points. She seems back to her level before Wimbledon, when she took every match not seriously enough.

Get the title now, Flavia! ;)

Venus, she played horrible tennis from what I heard. But on the positive side this is the 1st time in like ages since she has played three tournaments in three consecutive weeks with good results. So i guess there is no need to cry about it :)

Congrats to Flavia though, she earnt the win with consistent tennis & she deserves to be in the top 20.

Venus' heart would not have been in any of these tournaments IMO. i don't think if she intended to fully exert herself Venus would play 3 weeks in a row anymore. her body is too susceptible to injury.

Disappointing, but you got the one that mattered i.e. Wimbledon. Good job from Flavia, but rest up venus for the YEC or for 08 if you don't make it there for whatever reason. Oh and somebody tell Venus to play a REAL warm up tournament before the Australian this time.

Wow! :clap2:

Flavia :worship: Excellent win! Didn't see the match, but according to the stats she played extremely well! :yeah: Especially in holding her own serve, she even won more than 50% on her second serve points! :bolt:

Venus :awww:  The only thing I could conclude was that she was fatigued(played 3 tournaments in a row), second serve & return let her down a bit. :( Missed out a chance on her 4th of the year... Hopefully you did enough to qualify for YEC, Venus

Good luck in the final Flavia! Win it all now! :D

I don't understand how some people say a win, a final and a semi in three TIER III is a good run when your name is Venus Williams  If Serena, Justine, Maria, Amelie,... would have done so everybody would say they are in slump! So I'm gonna say: pick it up Venus!

Glad to see Flavia is back on old form again :yeah:

I watched the match....I should say that Flavia didn't do anything special...she kept her first serves in and groundstrokes strong and flat...this was already enough to kill venus today! Flavia just needed to keep the balls back to venus and venus would hit wild shots very soon! Venus didn't grunt or attack a lot! She even struggled to get the balls in....POOR PLAY!!!

Venus missed like six to seven returns in the tie-break

Venus
She needs to rest before she plays the YEC. ;)
I hope she can raise her game, in this shape she´ll have no chance there.
That´s the difference between 2000 and 2007.
2000 she won New Haven and 2 days later she played the US Open and won there, too.
2007 she hasn´t got the power to play 2 or 3 good tournaments in a row. Her results are still good, but she only played small tournaments.

FLAVIA FULL TROTTLE !!!!!!!!!!!!! When she ending her season? I think it should be after this tournament, she could still play a tournament before the end, but so many consecutive tournies she'll be tired! MAKE A STIR IN 2008  Quit many upsets here!!! First shahaar now venus (and razzano) ! YEAY FLAVIA

Maybe Venus played worse than you'd want to, but she played many matches as did Flavia so I think that maybe the conditions were tough and Flavia just kept strong, the weight loss has to be positive, cause if it was just loosing weight and not gaining muscle and strenght at the same time she wouldn't cope so many matches in the 35+ degrees matches

Venus wasn't playing her best, but Flavia took her chances and held her nerves when she needed to, despite hitting 2 or 3 DF's when she was up a break in the 2nd. Flavia was also very solid when she saved the 1st SP, with a stunning FH winner. :inlove: :D

Congrats, Flavietta !! :hearts: :worship: :yeah:

In 2000 Venus was 20yrs old. At that age you can do anything;) . When I turned to the livestream linked and saw Venus, I told my husband that Venus needs to be in a bed somewhere. She looked so tired and worn.

I thought it was an excellent idea to play in Asia. The lower rank tournies definetly need some promotion and I personally think that Vee sometimes struggles against lower rank players. She played well throughtout and even added an extra tournament. She shouldn't be bashed for that or retire just because she lost to a professional player. That's something I think womens tennis needs to realize. Almost every man on the ATP tour can beat anyone on any giving day if they come out swingin right! The WTA is starting to get like that as well. Flavia played well. She took her chances and fought hard. Venus might not have play her best, but who does when they lose!. Take some positives and be grateful she played 3 weeks straight! Venus rest up, improve your serve and if you qualify for Madrid....SHOOTOUT! YOU BETTA GET'EM!:armed:

Why are people so mad that Venus lost?

First the complaint from fans is that Venus doesn't play in the fall. Well, she played this fall and and her results are a win, a final and a semifinal. What's more important is that Veus has secured enough points to likely qualify for the YEC. Plus, being that she is #7 in the race as of today, if Sharapova or Hantuchova does well, expect to see Venus in Linz to make sure she qualifies (though I think she will qualify after Zurich as I believe Maria and Daniela will lose early).

As much as I like my fellow Venus fans here, I think a lot of them expect too much from Venus (I mean she isn't a robot programmed to win every single event). Vee seems to receive far more criticism for her losses than any other top player. I mean yeah we know Vee should be winning these kinds of matches but big deal if she slips up now and again, it happens to everyone

btw Liz, I'd be really surprised if Vee enters Linz. I think she is done with tennis for the moment and will only play the YEC if she qualifies on what she has as of right now. I might be wrong though.

Damnit. Nonsense.

Being a tennis aficionado, I experience feelings! Feelings change with the circumstances. Serena won, you're glad (as you said), it's a feeling caused by Serena. Venus sucked big time, I'm mad at her, it's a feeling caused by Venus. Thus I have the right to be mad at Venus, you have the right to be glad for Serena. And before you jump on it, I could have said "I'm angry", it doesn't really change anything. Being "mad at her" and "being angry" is kind of the the same thing.
So stop agressing me for BS and being so haughty with me, we didn't raise the pigs together.

yes this is a pathetic loss to a bad player at Tier III in straight sets :tape:
But we've all seen how badly Venus is capable of playing. I've seen her literally give 3/4 games away with 16 straight UE and DFs. So losing to Pennetta is not that surprising. This loss only shows that she is playing at the level she was playing at b4 Wimbledon and USO. Which is that crazy up and down level where she can beat anybody and lose to anybody.

I'm sure Venus will be fine to qualify for the YEC.

However, for those of you who aren't so sure: How can you be such a great player to win a GS in a year, but not have enough results to back it up to get a spot in the top 8 eight YEC? I think thats shameful.

I never think its a great idea for a top player to play too many events tier 3 and below. One or two a year, whether it be for confidence, match practice after an injury, change of surface, playing @ home etc is fine - - but playing 3 in a row like this, it can only bring the level of a top player down to that of a tier 3 player.

Play the best => you play better to cope with it.
Play those ranked below => your play gets dragged down.

And not to take anything away from Flavia, but that reasoning above is so true.

too true. Plus you lose confidence when you lose to the bad players that populate the Tier III's and IV's and you don't gain that much confidence by beating them cuz jsut cuz you can beat Flavia Penneta doesn't mean you're going to be able to beat Ana Ivanovic but if you lose to someone like Penneta it prob. means you will get thrashed by Ivanovic.

Also, what does that say about the WTA tour that someone who is losing to journeywomen in Tier III's is also winning slams (a la Serena and Venus). Womens' tennis is crazy. Nothing makes sense in the game anymore. The only consistent force is Justine, all the other women are crazy.

VenusSerenaBlvd.

Venus can play up and down, not just at different tournaments but even within tournaments. Wimbledon this year was a perfect example of how she can play like crap the first couple of rounds and then turn on a switch. Vee needs to rest up and prep for the YEC (which I think she will still make).

I don't know what some of you are talking about. I mean Venus has had wins vs. many of the top 10 players - Ivanovic, Jankovic, Kuzy. She has trouble with playing against the lower ranked ones. I think playing these 3 weeks was pretty useful. I feel that Vee should have played the upper tier tourneys, but hey it was her choice to play the Asian circuit. And she still did a great job playing there. All the top players lose to lower ranked players during their careers. It just sucks when it happens, but hey it was still a great year for V!

I think her movement is one of the very few aspects of her game that survived during the first 6 months of this year.

I can't believe how people think a loss against Razzano is more understandable than a loss against Flavia. Pre-injury Flavia was actually a really good player. I really hope this win, and the whole of her Asian run, mean that she's getting back to where she's been before. I'm sure she is though, the signs were already there in june:yeah:

I can't believe how people think a loss against Razzano is more understandable than a loss against Flavia. Pre-injury Flavia was actually a really good player. I really hope this win, and the whole of her Asian run, mean that she's getting back to where she's been before. I'm sure she is though, the signs were already there in june:yeah:
Good luck in the final, Flavia:kiss:

Oh, and I agree that a player like Venus shouldn't play 3 tier-III's in a row. Even winning all three of them wouldn't have been "great" for her, I think.

Fed Cup. And she looked extremely mediocre there.

Fed Cup. And she looked extremely mediocre there.

When Fed Cup? Lat time she played was against Peng and she won, and before against Henin in FInal at Charleroi, in which she lost 4-6 5-7 playing well, and before against Spain destroyed AMG 6-3 6-0 and Dominguez Lino. Probably you made a non sense post and now u dont know what to say..

vs Peng?
Yes, that was in the middle of her slump, of course she looked mediocre then:rolleyes:

There's no use in using her form in april as a marker for how she might have played today though:tape:

Todays win was a steady win for her, very steady. Say what you want, but she was leading all through the match, and she kept her head together in the 2nd set when Venus broke back, and in the tiebreak, which must have been really exciting for her. After the year she's has, this is huge for her, and anything but mediocre.

Hey All,

Anyone that says Venus should retire needs to look into the mirror and may haps retire themselves. I've always found it a little sad that certain player's so-called fans say the same thing upon their so-called favorite player's loss. They take it to heart seemingly more than the said player(s). If Venus wasn't playing, some would complain about that. And now that she is and for the most part is healthy, some complain about that. It's a good thing, Venus could care less what anyone on this board thinks, for she doesn't even have to be out there. She is rich, mind you.

I am just happy to see Venus still around. I thought she would be gone by now. I really do believe that next year will be her last (after the Olympics), so I just want to savor the realization that she is still standing now, in 2007 & hopefully, in 2008. She is on a mission to make the Olympic team.

Another thing some don't seem to get is that this is a tour that these ladies compete on. No one can win them all. If so, then why play the game? What would be the point?

I appreciate the fans that love the game first and then their so-called fave(s). Why can't some just (and like Venus has said) accept that "it is what it is?" The league is always evolving, and parity is one of the aspects of it. Good on Flave for getting the job done. Venus knows she didn't deserve to win, because she didn't execute well enough when it counted. Why can't some see that? It really is beyond childish for some to suggest a player retire because said player got outplayed - and for whatever reason.

After all, she had just beaten her previous opponent 6-1, 6-1. Today, she was not able to play her best in order to beat Flave's best. It really is that simple. We need to be happy that Venus and others are healthy at/by this point of the year, and be happy that she will be back next year.

Good Lord no, Venus will be around for a long time yet ;) In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if she was still active on the tour by the time the London olympics come around. I know you could argue about her injuries taking their toll but she plays a limited schedule anyway so I think her body will hold up. I'm just trying to be really optimistic

I thought Venus was making a mistake playing 3 events in a row, not sure why other than to gain match practice because she'll make the season ending champs. This really is a horrendous loss, hard to tell which loss is more shamefull, Razzano or Penneta?! Impossible to choose really, but to think someone of Venus' calibre could lose to either player is truly shocking.

Its not a loss of monumental proportions.Venus must have been tired from playing for three straight weeks and played twice in one day the previous day.I think she did well enough to gather 275 points and solidfy her no.8 ranking and its a certainty she will qualify and her ranking can go up from eight to probably no.6.I like Flavia but I think its one of those flukish wins that dont really matter. If she had lost at Wimbledon I will say all these pages are warrantied.Flavia is a top 25-30 player and will never be in the top 15,she is 25yrs and almost the same age as Venus and she has never tasted the top twenty.I dont give this win a merit because its meaningless Venus was tired and the fact that she reached the semis is great. As her faithful fans we know she will rise again as a phoenix.Go Vee!:bounce:

Unless Daniela, who is the closest to possibly grabbing the final YEC spot, wins Zurich and Linz, Venu will qualify for the YEC. In fact, if you look at the Zurich draw, you'd like Venus' chances. In fact, Venus could qualify as early as early next week.

Sorry but this Asian tour was a really stupid decision by Venus as i stated when she signed for Tokio in the last minute.

She played 3 events, 1 Tier IV, 2 Tier III, 3 straight weeks, 14 matches, 30 sets. Walks away with 275 points. No top 20 wins.

Compare that to what Henin did in Germany, playing a Tier II event, 1 week, 4 matches, 9 sets and walked away with 300 points and 4 top 20 wins.

That´s what i call a smart scheduling.

Oh well

I would agree if Venus's main goal was to get points for YEC. Venus just isnt as consistent as Henin and a quarterfinal loss in Germany IMO isn't as good as winning a tournament and reaching a final. She kind of burnt out, but it was a good showing for her and we all know that Venus has never really done well in the fall indoor season.

I think the stupid part was playing 3 weeks straight especially with her "anemia" issue. Maybe she was trying to stretch herself, who knows.

I think the best choice would have been to start out at a Tier IV and then maybe go to Stutgart(sp?) or Zurich or somewhere where she would face tougher competition. However, Venus has had enough top 10 wins to prove that she shouldn't have too much of a problem except against Henin.

Yes but Venus should have choosen lets say Beijing Tier II (keep in Asia if she wanted to visit there) and Zurich Tier I. Both weeks apart from each other and i am sure Venus would have won more than 275 points betwen both of this events and played way less that she did.

But what she has now? 3 tiring weeks, only 1 tournament win, no top 20 wins, and doubts about her game perhaps for losing to considerably lower ranked players than her and also she could not beat a top 20 player along the way.

I mentioned this here http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=11724933&postcount=33 .. but delusionals jumped on me.
