Unfortunately Nicole won't be seeded  but she defends no points here so there's some chance to earn some points and beat top players.. there're a lot of beatable players like Sharapova, Bartoli, Chakvetadze etc... (Hantuchova :p ) I hope Nicole will get nice draw to win some matches here. Draw ceremony will start at 13:30 CET.

GOOD LUCK NICOLE!

It doesn't suck at all. There is no in form top 20 player in Nicole's quadrant but Jankovic, who might not be 100% fit. Many players got way tougher draws.

Srebotnik's great movement and footwork? :tape:
Srebotnik is one of the most aced top 100 players, so it's hardly a surprise. Hantuchova plunked her 10 times last year at Wimbledon. I remember it cleary.

Edit: I also found that Nicole played Srebotnik at Australian Open this year and aced her 12 times. Shocking that such a Nicole fanatic like you doesn't remember. :p

Vaidisova earns welcome victory

1 hour, 14 minutes ago

Nicole Vaidisova earned a welcome 6-4, 6-2 victory over Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik on Monday to reach the second round of the Zurich Open.

The Czech enjoyed a highly successful first half of the season, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open as well as the quarter-finals of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. But she was then struck down by a virus, and has since played only the US Open and Moscow.

"I missed four tournaments after Wimbledon, and then I pulled my hamstring after the US Open," Vaidisova said. "It's disappointing because I played well and had a good ranking and a big chance to reach the Championships. I was really looking forward to it.

"Then in the second half I almost didn't play at all. But these are things I can't do anything about, and now I'm just trying to enjoy the fact I'm on the court healthy."

It was a good win over Srebotnik, who has excelled in Zurich in the last two years with victories over Amelie Mauresmo and Elena Dementieva as she reached the 2005 quarter-finals and 2006 semis.

A vital difference between them was the serve, as Vaidisova claimed victory with her 11th ace and Srebotnik was plagued with six double-faults.

"The serve was definitely the key, and I thought I returned pretty well," said Vaidisova. "She has a big serve too but after a couple of games I was able to step it up and hit some good shots from that."

World No.15 Vaidisova was another player to rack up an impressive victory on Day 1 of the Zürich Open, requiring little more than an hour to brush aside the challenge of Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik. The Czech star made a bright start the contest, securing an early service break before closing out a tight opener. The second set saw Vaidisova display glimpses of her very best form, racing into a 5-2 lead before wrapping up a 64 62 win with an ace.

The 18-year-old Vaidisova's reward for her opening round success is a clash with No.3 seed Jelena Jankovic. The match will be the pair's eighth career meeting and although the Serb trails the head-to-head 3-4, she has won their two most recent encounters.

"I could only improve on my performance from last year" Vaidisova said, "since I only won two games then. The key for me today was my serve, it gave me a lot of free points and I think it put her [Srebotnik] under a little bit of pressure. Hopefully I can continue playing like this against Jankovic because it's going to be a tough match."

Yeah, I agree. Justine has been playing incredible tennis the last few months. Hopefully Nicole can push her in the match. I'm still happy to see that Nicole did pretty well in another tournament though.

Vaidisova
Oct 20th, 2007, 12:44 AM
Henin's semifinal foe, Vaidisova, was equally impressive during her straight-set dismissal of the Ukraine's Alona Bonarenko in Day 5's opening match on centre court. The 18-year-old Czech star required just one hour, 11 minutes to record her 34th victory of the season and despite a battling display from Bondarenko in the second set, the 61 64 win was never really in doubt.

"My goal this week was to last a little longer in the tournament than last year," Vaidisova said. "Then I only lasted 42 minutes against Golovin, so things are a looking up this time round! I've been fighting a cold this week but playing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday has certainly helped and it's great to be out there again and playing well here has done wonders for my confidence."

Henin said it was her toughest match since losing at Wimbledon. While that encouraged Vaidisova, it couldn't make up for the loss.

"I had my chances definitely," said Vaidisova, who missed half the summer with mononucleosis. "Being able to play so close and so well against the No. 1 player in the world is a positive thing, but right now all I can see is that I lost, so I'm not happy."
