I am getting a little tired of some posters all of a sudden becoming the defenders of lower-ranked players just because higher ranked players are taking wildcards or not into events.

Wildcards are not just intended for newcomers. Or local or national players of certain tournaments.

If a high-ranked player wants to take a last minute wildcard into an event more power to them. It is their right and they deserve it.

It is my fault for saying 'stealing' - I was just interested as to why Martina had opted to go for that option, rather than entering and waiting to see what state she was in by the time the US Open came around.

I am totally for higher ranked players using wildcards to make last minute entries into tournaments, but I do feel Slams are special and it is a nice chance for up and coming players to get some experience on a big court against the big players. Having said that I would be much happier if people like Maria Sharapova, Vera Douchevina etc got wildcards into Slam main draws rather than them always going to Australian, French, British and American players. It should be a chance for youngsters who have a bright future, not youngsters who just happen to have been born in one of the four countries with Slams!!!

You make thoughtful, objective remarks Mark, but it has been kind of annoying to read lately that people think it's such an injustice for top players to take wildcards.......
