View Full Version : I agree that the Williams are head and shoulders above the field right now, however..

Let's keep in mind that Serena has only won 3 consecutive events, something not that unusual for a world #1. Also, remember that the last time Venus played an event Serena wasn't in, she lost.

So the field is still in business.

If they make it to the US Open finals again then threads like these will be meaningless.

quite right.
Yes, she's *only* won 5 events this year. *only* 2 grand slams, and 2 tier 1s.
she's *only* leading the #2 spot by about 800 point and the #3 spot by about 1800 points.

She's *only* beaten Venus, the previous #1, twice in a row and *only* beaten Jen cap the #1 before that a few times in a row. plus she had hingis' number for certainly the last few times they have played.

RIGHT NOW, serena is head and shoulders above the rest of the field, excepting perhaps her sister who is a bit closer. this will not last forever and i'm sure that serena will lose a few more times this year, but by far she is playing far and away the best tennis of anyone on the WTA.

of course the field in still in business...

The've been in the last 3 out of 4 grandslam finals, the tournaments that matter that says it all, u know aswell as i do that to the vast majority of tennis fans the only results that matter are the grandslams and they are dominating thoese..

The following in a sarcastic tone: How dare you harbor any hopes that the rest of the tour including that loser Monica Seles (despite having more Grand Slams that Venus+Serena) could even dare to challenge the Williams. Hell Lindsay and Martina should not even bother to come back. ;)

1) If Venus and Serena both get through the rest of this year, it'll be proof God exists, cause that would take a miracle. There's half the year to go, and both of them get hurt often. I'm counting my blessings and not going crazy. It's good to see them #1 and #2. It's better to see them both health. It'll be GREAT, once Venus is #1 again it'll be great.

2) In December of 2000, who pegged Jennifer Capriati 3 GS titles? I'd say 'the field' has a damn good chance of winning the US Open. Remember, 'the field' already has two spots in the semis. Venus and Serena both have to win five matches to get that far.

I'd bet money right now on at least a 'One Williams final'. I'm keeping my shekels in my pocket where another ALL Williams affair is concerned.

Serena is on a tear and so young and her game can still grow. She is the only player with the exception of Venus in the WTA right now who I can see really DOMINATE the field. I wouldn't be surprised if Serena wins the next 5 grandslams. She'll be ranked so high that she will be at least 1300 points from the rest of the tour. If she is ranked high at the end of the year, she'll be tough to catch imho for the remaing of 2003. She has no points to defend at OZ, and I can see Serena staying at #1 for a few years. I fear Serena will stop alot of girls to get to #1 ever again. Outside of Venus, of course ... these players are getting better and better, and I pretty much think Jennifer, Hingis and even the sweet Seles will never become #1 again. And yes I am a bit cocky... but Serena is spoiling me.:)

Dawn, maybe you should come back to reality. Hingis fans said the same thing in 97 when no one could touch her. They thought she would continue to dominate for years and now look at her. Seles fans said the same thing in 93 and then look what happened. You never know what can happen in life. Serena may get a career ending injury. I don't care how good the player is they can't beat real life.

Serena's game is with the "here and now", Hingis's isn't. 9lmao about reality) Now I can see Serena CLEARLY being #1 for a long time and winning 10 slams before she retires. Steffie, Seles and Navratolova did it and I think Serena can too. Of course everyone is human and can be hurt and can retire early, but with the way things are looking I think Serena can dominate for a long to come. I am not saying this ONLY because I am a Serena fan, but I really think she can dominate and be one of the greatest ever. Even thought Hingis fans said that in 97, for everyone else the writing was on the wall .. we all knew she was going to go down. Her game was stagnant, and don't even go there about the serve. Seles got stabbed, but if she didn't she would of been DOMINATING still.

Right now, Serena is the player who I can see in a realistic view as winning 10 grandslams before she retires. Venus is a close second. Serena is fast, has great groundies, but the one weapon that I see her really hurting these players with is that gorgeous serve. Her serve is the best on the tour right now, first and second, and man, barring injury or anything crazy or drastic, I think she will DOMINATE. Sure she will lose some, but I think this women will retire with 10 slams. if not more. :)

I don't recall hearing anyone say this. Maybe you can tell us about some actual people who said this.

I agree for the most part with Dawn Marie. My only slight disagreement is that I think Venus will also easily win at least 10 GS majors before retiring (barring injury of course). The strange widespread belief on this board that Venus will simply be dominated by Serena in the future I find perplexing. Contrary to what people here seem to think Venus has one of the sharpest minds in tennis today and will readjust her game to challenge and defeat her sister again. I forsee that a genuine rivalry will emerge and they will trading GS majors and the top two rankings between them for years to come (again barring serious injuries). Unless someone new comes along to challenge them who has extraordinary talent that we don't currently know about. I don't think any of the current players (including Lindsay & Martina) will be able to seriously challenge either one of the sisters in the next five years or so.
