View Full Version : "Let's keep on playing MIND games ...."

The big change for Serena Williams from before WB 2001 to after seems to be basically mental. The shots are the same. Her mental focus and concentration are what seemed to have improved. The player that showed flashes, even whole matches of total 'unstopability', now turns it on and keeps it on for whole tournaments.

So, let's look at the rest of the top 20 or so, and ask, who's only a mental adjustment away from a GS title? And what's the adjustment?

My pick is Jelena Dokic. She's already won a couple Tier I's, and she's famous poor letting her attitude go south when she's losing. If she studied some Monica videos, and copied that resolved, she'd wear down some of the opponents who get out to leads on her. It's not that I think she's closest to winning a GS title. But I don't believe that most of the top ten are being held back by attitude or focus. Injuries, not-enough-talent, and conditioning are all issues for some player or another in the top ten.

My pick is Lindsay Davenport. I love Lindsay and before she got injured she wasnt doing so well mentally. After the way she broke down against Venus at Wimby 2000, I felt like there was a mental hump that she had to get over. Not saying that Venus won because LIndsay collapsed, but that when Venus started to raise her level of player after being down 0-4 , Lindsay just didnt have the mental strength to hang in there. So my girl is due for a GS sometime soon. It's unlikely that it will happen this year, but it could.

HINGIS of course, i think the 4 MP against Capriati at the AUSTRALIAN OPEN proved that.

I actually think Dokic's mental strength is her greatest weapon.

Justine and Amelie might need more mental strength to win a slam

Hingis without a doubt. Her only problem in the AO Final was her attitude. She played her MP's too conservative, waiting for Jen to miss. And once she lost the Tiebreak she gave up. If she had been a bit mentally tougher on her MP's I think she would have gone for more on them, and most liekly won the Match.

Justine, Amelie and Elena D. All 3 have a great game and definite Slam talent. Add some mental toughness to the mix and these girls would be solid Top 10 players.

Dokic is a tough cookie, its her shots that let her down. Hit the ball harder and harder when in trouble. There is no plan B. Daniela totally out classed her at Wimby this year.

Amelie... I just can't get her... :(

Dokic seems quite tough up there. Lindsay has mental blocks, but definitely, she doesn't choke.

Adjustment: the reality that-- OUI you are talented! She's got to balance her game with ASV-esque type tenacity (and junkballing) and the power game she already has.

Amelie is the best example, IMO.

She came to mind when I first saw this.

When she is one she can beat most anyone, she is just incredible.

When she is off, she can lose to anyone.

One match she is one fire, the next she is cold.
