View Full Version : What the HELL is Jankovic doing in Bangkok?!?

Asmus

This has been her post-US Open schedule:
1 week off
Sep. 10 Bali
Sep. 17 Beijing
Week off
Oct. 1 Stuttgart
Oct. 8 Bangkok

She's played 4 out of 6 weeks, going from New York to Asia to Europe and now back to Asia to return to Europe in time for the championships and perhaps play other events in Europe before.

If she wins in Bangkok, she will win 140 points. However, she has played so many tournaments that her 17th tournament is 115 points, so the most her ranking can even go up is 35 points--a little low considering that she's #3 in the world with a shot to finish at #2 and make inroads to #1 next year!

As it stands, Jelena has 710 unused ranking points approximately (close to Eleni Daniilidou's ranking at #39 with 711 points) and if she wins Bangkok her unused ranking points will climb to 825, which would be good enough for #35.

Does anyone agree that she is setting herself up for a major burnout next year?

Every player gets injured. When it happens to Jelena, everyone will say "I told u so".
But injury happens to every player. She's healthy and enjoys long plane rides.

lets hope she doesnt get injured, thats the most important thing.

As for playing too much: well, its annoying but she enjoys playing that much  and burnout is quite possible :o

It wasn't really a "week off" after US Open.. she lost on Wednesday I think. Her first Bali match was also on Wednesday?

She is playing Bangkok over Moscow:eek:

I'm sure a lot of this has to do with the fact that she was near the bottom of the gold exempt list and I think has to play three tier 3 tournaments. She won't be playing these tier 3s next year - and will definitely not even be allowed to if she wanted to it clashes with a tier 1 or 2.

I hope that next year she does cut down on her schedule like she says she will. But she committed to Bangkok a while ago and - unlike a lot of players I could name - honours her committments and does not pull out at the last minute.

Yeah, let her do whatever she wants, if she likes to play a lot, who cares? We all know what happened to Clijsters in 2004 when she did the same thing in 2003, so... But this girl is really crazy and her schedule is a mess!

Injuries happen at any time, not just if you play too much. In fact for example the Williams sisters, they have never played loads of tournaments and yet are always getting injured.

she said she was going to cut her schedule NEXT SEASON so she's taking full time this season :-) but really this much travel is really to much. so far she's palying Bangkok, then Zurich, and she is not on the entry list for Linz YET, so hopefully she will take some time off before the YEC. and yes, she has played some 80 matches this season and didn't get an injury yet, so she has a good strong body at the moment and she's taking full advantage of it.

Just one question, does anyone know does Jelena have a coach? If she doesn't then this is her way of training plus visiting some interesting destinantions :) plus it's hard to find a coach that can follow her traveling schedule

Pimmchanok
Oct 7th, 2007, 01:25 PM

she's no friend of the environment, travelling that much
if she should only play tournaments in europe I could try to understand, but going to bangkok now is just stupid! (knowing she doesn't have a first round bye...)
maybe she can play in canada too one week before the masters...

Could it be that she's been listening to that MacCartney song recently?

In a village in Old Siam*, sir
There's a lady who's lost her way
In an effort to find a man, sir
She found herself in the old UK

For those who have gaps in history. Siam = former name of Thailand

i think she wants a chance to beat venus, that's why. she needs to establish herself as a real real top top top wta player, you know ;).

Why not?

It's not up to us where each individual plays.....its their choice. Jelena probably has apperance fees/commitments/promises as well as a desire to play in a new country and visit new cultures.

She needs only 9 matches more to play in this season to be 2nd player in history (after Navratilova) which played more than 100 matches in some season - if she played 11 matches before end of this season she will tied Navratilova record in number of played matches. If we also count FED CUP matches, she need only 4 matches to be 3rd player (after Navratilova and Clijsters) with more than 100 matches in one season! She need only 19 games to be 2nd player in WTA history (after Navratilova in 1975) which played more than 2000 games in one single season (if we count FED CUP matches she is already only 2nd player with that "success" ), and she is maybe (possibility is atleast more than 70%!!!) already broke world record in "minutes at court per season" and "points played in single season" - but we dont have relevant stats or sources to proove that. Also, if she played atleast 110 new games (about 5-6 matches) she will broke Navratilova "2090 games played" record from 1975. If we count FED CUP matches - to overtake 2165 Navratilova world record in number of games which she play in one single season (1975) she needs to play 90 new games (about 4-5 matches). Also she needs about 6-7 new matches to broke world record in number of sets played across one season (again Navratilova 1975). Like you see - if no Navratilova 1975 season JJ will be already absolute "WTA history" leader in all this categories, but she still have chances to overtake Martina1975 - she will play atleast one match in Bangok and Zurich, and atleast three matches in Madrid round robin... and... we all know JJ - she will maybe ask WC at Linz!

Wrong. Coetzer played 27 tournaments in 1997.

Jankovic could be the first year-end Top-3 player in 20-25 years to have played more than 22 tournaments during the season.

Yes but Kim played singles and doubles, being #1 in both at same time. That is a LOT of tennis, and also why Kim was so amazing.

This may have already been answered in this thread, but a player who finishes in the top 10 one year cannot play a Tier III event which clashes with a Tier I event the next year, right? That's why Venus and JJ can play here?

Bruno71

This may have already been answered in this thread, but a player who finishes in the top 10 one year cannot play a Tier III event which clashes with a Tier I event the next year, right? That's why Venus and JJ can play here?

It's more complicated than that:

Select WTA Tour players will be chosen prior to the Tour Year as Gold Exempt and Silver Exempt players...

The 1-20 Gold Exempt List will be determined using a
hybrid formula determined 50% by WTA Tour Ranking
(Monday after US Open including Special Rankings)
and 50% by Marquee Value

So it's not solely their WTA ranking that determines what tournaments they're required to play the following year, and which ones they can't...it's this "blended" Gold Exempt list, which is determined after the US Open every year.

Currently, players ranked 1-6 on the Gold Exempt list are not allowed to play Tier III tournaments unless there is no Tier I or Tier II tournament being held at the same time.

JJ was #14 on the Gold Exempt list last year...I don't know what Venus' status was. In any case, neither have any conflicts playing in Bangkok, and were perhaps committed by the WTA to play it.
