Venus choked a bit, served for the match at 64, 65 up, and had 3 MPs at 6-3 in the TB. And then her injury came in the 3rd.

She still tried her hardest to win despite having the injury, which was good to see. Unfortunately, Virginie did not get tight and took good advantage to win the match.

I don't expect to see Venus in either Bangkok or YEC now (even if she qualifies).

Both were hitting so hard, and a lot of nice winners.

Oct 6th, 2007, 05:45 AM
She did take an injury time out. It affected her, but she continued to fight as always. Virginie put up a great fight and deserved the win. I don't think the injury is major. I would think that she is going to take next week off. At least I hope she does.

She still might not qualify?? Damn it!! I really think she deserves a spot in the top 8 of the YEC rankings. If I were part of the WTA head honchos, I'd feel funny if a current top 10 player (who won Wimbledon) does not qualify.

lol yup!!!

Razzano played great. But Venus really choked that match away. Too many DF on imp.points. Which is wierd when you look at her match aginst Jankovic where she hit great serves on imp. points.

Oct 6th, 2007, 05:45 AM
Well done to Razzano for fighting down the nerves - it looked like she might choke it away but she held firm the third time to consolidate the break and serve out the match.

Venus - great effort but should have got it done in the second set tiebreak. Paid the price for not doing so. Gamely continued in the third while clearly restricted - hope that leg is only strained and not too injured and rest will cure it.

I only managed to catch the match from 46 52 for Venus, but what I saw was horrible. I like Virginie a good bit, she's a great player and I'm proud and happy for such a huge fin for her, but Venus was TERRIBLE.

I saw her come to net in a set and half TWICE. And she botched both volleys.

I suppose it was dramatic but all the errors and long pauses.....just kind of left me dead.

As soon as Venus lost I immediately thought of how the WTA blogger thing cursed her. Oh well. Again, congratulations Virginie, her year has changed dramatically.

I wouldn't go that far.

She clearly had a thigh strain or pull in the upper right leg and it was hampering her movement but it's not like she was about to collapse. She was still able to compete at about 60-70% mobility.

Great match from Razzano. She choked a 5-3 lead in the 2nd set, and nearly choked the 3rd as well but she fighted weell.Back to back titles, with a win over Venus is good.Like I said in an other thread the girl always had the game to be top20, maybe even top10, and I think that Bartoli's final at Wimbledon gave her some confidence. Now that she had find some consistency she can only climb the ranking.Better late than never.

funny how people are blaming the lost due to the injury..
well.. she did get injured..
Venus was badly injured my ass...
she got injured when she didnt close
it out on those mps..

6-4 6-5, she didnt make it
then 6-3, served twice, she still didnt make it
6-4 7-7,she served a freakings double fault...!!!
WTF?

she says that she does a lot of things in her blog...
then why doesnt she fuckin care about her serve???

she was being flat footed a lot...
and those freakin UNFORCED errors...
whats the excuse in that??

after hitting an error, she checked her freaking nails..!!!
once again hit a df on break point......

one thing i wonder is that, why she didnt attack the net more in the 2nd set??
and Razzanos forehand was on fire...
Razzano was playing like Morigami, less consistent but more power..

You could see that either Venus wasnt prepared to play this match,
or she had too much karaoke last night..
she was giving the match to Razzano in the first set...
both played awful..

oh most of her serves werent long...
they were on the net..!!
yucky play totally...

go Venus play your Bangkok,
the tournament the you committed to before you
did this and that...!!!

and oh..!!!

I think that there should be a new rule that
that a player could use..
A 5 min massage break..!!
totally abusing the injury timeout..!!!

KoOlMaNsEaN
Oct 6th, 2007, 06:40 AM
What a comeback Virginie and with great play from your forehand. Such a dramatic match one of the most IMO with virginie up 52 then down 3 match points at 6-3 in the tiebreak then venus' LONG injury timeout then the whole final set with five consecutive breaks. Great match

Venus is 309 points ahead of Daniela in the YEC Race now. with Daniela resting next week, that leaves her only 3 possible tournaments left in the yr, meaning should would need about 100 at each. there are many possible combinations of results that would get Daniela 300 points. the minimum for each of the 3 tourneys would be a QF in Zurich, SF in Linz and a Final in Quebec but obviously a win in Linz or Final in Zurich would get her the 300 points but it is unlikely. and all of that is assuming Venus really is injured and wont play until the YEC. so Venus is probably better off just resting next week.

Oct 6th, 2007, 10:02 AM
Its not a devastating loss, she reached a final in two weeks thats too much to ask for Venus who never plays this time of the year.I am glad she managed to get 215points to solidify her place at the YEC.She is still playing and enjoying herself thats what matters. This loss is insignificant to her real fans she has 36 titles and won a slam this year and has been winning a lot.She must have been tired, all the same good luck Vee at your next event.:worship: I would not read too much into this loss I am sure Vee is not devastated.:wavey:

Excellent post. As long as Venus isn't seriously injured, and it does appear to be just a strain, it is not a loss Venus fans should lose sleep over. My guess is that Venus is still in a good position for year end championships and she can afford to take next week off. If her thigh is still bothering her it would be wise to do so. I really don't think Venus is fit enough to play well for three straight weeks anyway, she needs to conserve her energy.

As for Virginie, well, she has now won 10 matches in a row and that say everything about how well she is playing. She has always been a great talent and it is good to see her putting it together. I suspected Venus would win, but this was always going to be a close competitive match and I'm not that surprised Virginie won.

Venus needs to get it together. I'm tired of her serve "betraying" her. I'm tired of all of these errors. She's a professional. She should learn to correct some things. another choke by venus. ill just have to add this matche to her qf in san diego and sf in charleston.
venus served for the match and had mps in the tb and still managed to lose. this is ridculous. all she had to do was play on good point or get one good serve in. why have teh biggest serve if it constantly lets you down and you constantly df. had she won this match she coulda just withdrew from bangkok and maintained her winning streak going into yec. what happened to venus not losing tier 3's. first istanbul and now this.

There are so many childish posters on this forum it's freaking unbelievable.

Anyway I'm a bit pissed at Venus for not closing it out in 2 sets when she had the opportunity, coming back from 2/5 or was it 3/5 to to serving for it at 6/5 and the serve let her down big time. Even up 6/3 in the tiebreaker I somehow felt it would go three and Razzano would win.

The thing is I actually thought with the injury it would have been a blow out but Venus stayed in match, clearly became timid in her movement and could not hold serve at 4/4. Virginie was not going to let it happen again and she served it out KUDOS to her. Congrats to her two straight finals and two wins.

Congrats to Venus also for making it TWO STRAIGHT FINALS, that should commented especially playing practically everyday. And she DID not retire she let Virginie WIN it, go girl.

If she does not make the YEC I would be upset but so what.

Big Congrats to Razzano!

Vee hope the injury is not to serious and if it is go home girl it's not worth it.

A shining example of how the Williams sisters -- in this case, Venus -- are but a shadow of the force they once represented.

Venus and Serena can still both turn up the heat sporadically, and woe betide any opponent who catches them in such a mood.

Yet most of the time they are consigned to losing matches to opponents who are, let us face it, journey women. Razzano is actually no mean player, and was a great junior player many moons ago. But she is hardly class A, and not a player anybody can claim to be of great potential, having been around the block a few times already.

And we're told that Venus looked happy at the end

By the way, before people invoke the injuries clause, if Venus cannot last through a couple of tier 3 or 4 tournaments, against players who probably hit in their local park, then that further underlines my argument.

Did you see her give any excuse? Most of the time it's the fans of players that bring up the injury rather than the players. If you have issues take it out on the fans not the players.

BTW in any of you took the time to read Venus blog you would see she gave every opponent their due respect before and after each match. She never underestimated Razzano and in fact felt it would be a tough match.

WHATEVER!!! why don't you go hit with these so call local park players. Tummy aches has caused some to withdraw but Venus lost in a final to a player who's had two great weeks and people call that player a local park player. Venus played through and Virginie won fair and square.

Venus said she felt the injury in the first set but she played on because she wanted to win. Maybe the anxiety to finish it in two sets caused her to choke, and yes she choked but so what she's not the first and won't be the last.

"It started to hurt in the first set,'' said Williams. "I wanted to play because I wanted to win, then in the third set I couldn't get my leg up on my serve so I had to get it taped.''

She also said she was not tired so she's not making any excuse

"I wasn't tired,'' said Williams, who won the Korea Open on Sunday. "She managed to play good at the right moments so congratulations to her, she's had a great year.''

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/news/story?id=3051436

There is no need to attack the sisters, and pretend that they are only player that can lose a match that is seemingly in their grasp or that they should have won. Wimbledon 2007 semis against the year's 2 GS winner is a good example. The US Open 2007 defending champ loss is another. Even the great ones win some and lose some.

Let me point out the gaping hole in the floor beneath you - before I let you drop.

First of all, I'm sure you're right that Venus has faced many opponents who desperately want to win against her. They play, as you say, as if their lives depend on gaining 'the scalp'. In making this statement, you are implicitly acknowledging that Venus is the better player. Therefore, the overarching question is why on earth Venus could not play like her life depended on not being some nobody's scalp, as the champion she is supposed to be. Instead she is all glistening white teeth at the end.

Injuries? Well, I notice that I acknowledged them, and you didn't. I know too that Venus is no spring chicken - I never argued that she was. I think she probably is injured, and that it was responsible for her loss. I was merely stating a fact: Venus is not physically capable of winning as often, and as impressively, as she once did. And apparently you agree.

First of all, I would agree that Virginie won fair and square, even if Venus was injured. I don't think I ever suggested anything to the contrary. After all, Virginie has played as many matches in the last couple of weeks as Venus. If she's entered doubles competitions, as she might have done (I haven't checked), then she's played more matches.

And I'm laughing at Venus complimenting Virginie on her "great year". Venus probably doesn't give a damn, let alone know Virginie's ranking. Top players rarely have much of an idea of the rankings below the top 25.

The quotes you use prove what exactly? Do they prove that Venus is indeed a great force in women's tennis on a regular basis? No, they seem to prove what I was suggesting: Venus and Serena, great players though they indisputably are at their best, are not able to play to that level any more often than sporadically.

So when you rush for your pistols, remove them from the holster before you pull the trigger ;)

I think that's unfair to say for Venus. Not everyone is able to keep a high level 24/7. It makes Justine such a special player that she is able to sustain such a high level almost every time she plays. It's also a testament to how she manages her schedule. It's also a result of winning breeding confidence and getting on a roll to sustain that level.

We can't say that Venus isn't able to play at a high level no more often than sporadically. This is the first time in 3 years that she's been on such a good stretch for more than just one or two tournaments. The last time I remember is the clay season of 2004 and then she got injured.

I don't know how much the injury played into this.. Venus did play terribly in the previous round so it could just be that. Let's just wait until next year before proclaiming that Venus hasn't changed. IMO, she's turning the corner and when she gets some tourney wins under her belt and goes deeper in slams, we may see a return to 2003 consistency.

You are the one pulling out Pistols where they are not needed so check yourself before you give advice.

The word "UPSET" in sports means an unexpected result or reversal and this happens on a regular basis to a bunch of players and not just the WS as you were so quick to point your pistol on. Why are you so worried about the sisters sporadic play? Just concentrate on your faves, yeah unfortunately for them they are injured often but so what they still prove that they can win when it counts on the big stage.

As for Venus compliment to Razzano, why the need to laugh? If she had said opposite people like you would be the first to jump on her negatively. None of the top players give a rats arse about they low rank players they beat but they just do the politically correct thing after and poor on praises so...

Oh and if makes you feel better to think my quotes helped your cause, then WOOHOOOOOOOOOOO to you!

Seriously people, stop bitching. Both the Venus fans and the pathetic trolls who always pop up everytime Venus loses. You people, and you know who you are, are the most pathetic posters on this entire site.

You can't win them all, and if Venus' blog is any indication, she's still playing next week. She'll have another chance!

everyone always has something negative to say about venus.hell she could have retired when the injury came.i saw the match.she could not push off on her leg.i knew something was wrong and she was fighting herself.yes razzano won but she herself knows that it wasnt due to her fighting venus it was due to venus fighting herself and not able to execute because of the injury.it was written all over venus's face.but again congrats to both ladies venus made another final a week apart and won a title.so no head hanging down there.she just needs to stay healthy and she will be fine.i would say though that i wouldnt play anything else and just get ready for the australian open in 08 but venus knows her body.again congrats vee because you still outlasted most and to know that she didnt retire as some players would do when the pain sets in.she still gave the crowd a show and there money's worth.

Yes, they are.

Is it just me, or was the guy calling the match the worst announcer in the history of tennis? When Razzano was serving at 5-4, 30-30 in the second set, the guy said, "I know I should be neutral, but I hope Razzano wins the next two points and takes the second set." I still can't believe he said that.

I think we are going to see more losses from the WS as they go into decline from this year. The hot new players coming up all have the games to beat the WS and losing to razzano just confirms it, she is not even a new face. And everytime a WS loses, all the excuses about injuries will come up. So they always lose just because the oppenent hits more lucky shots or they are injured. Getting tiresome.
Face it, they are just getting beat because they are in decline, and more players are coming up with the game to beat them. Already Justine is dominating them.
I don't want the WS to retire as it is always fun to watch them play against other more interesting players, but it's obvious that they are in decline.
It is also rather silly for some WS fans to call other players like Justin chokers when it is so clear that venus choked all those MPs away, and to an "unknown" player also. Guess the new big chokers are the WS.

I must co-sign with my fellow Venus fans. How can one player when she loses be such an orgasmic-inducing event for people? I'm always happy when Henin, Jankovic, and Hingis lose but to be so blatant in hatred just astonishes me, still.

And I agree with darrinbaker. That guy's name is John Burgess. Who the hell is he? He's an awful commentator, and I'm tempted to contact TTC about him.

Razzano is a really good player and been underranked the past year and a half. She's a solid top 25 player and can beat the best on her day, as her history has shown. She's the true definition of an "upset specialist."

She deserves every moment of glory she has. :yeah:
