View Full Version : Are Rivalries Dead??

Following tennis this week, I just thought it was a shame that Justine Henin and Venus Williams always seem to avoid each other. That made me realize that we don't have anymore rivalries at this point in time in tennis. The only thing that comes close in my mind was the rivalry between Mauresmo and Henin in 2006. We really dont see the top slam winners/challengers go at it much anymore like they used to.

Hingis-V. Williams: 11 times between 1998-1999
Hingis-Davenport: 20 times between 1997-2001
Serena-JCap: 9 times between 2000-2002

Rivalries help generate fans and buzz around tennis. They create drama, great matches, and sustain interest. Does anyone think we'll see something like Hinis-WilliamsX2 or Venus-LIndsay or Capriati-Serena? I think there's a lot of potential to the Venus-Justine matchup but I doubt these players will ever play the same tournaments except slams and maybe Miami.

its because the only people who can consistently challenge justine, don't hardly play any tournaments, and usually not the ones that she plays

The WTA tour has deer in the headlights syndrome right now. Who knows when they'll wake up from this nightmare :help:

Maria Sharapova vs Serena Williams is a fan rivalry, not an actual rivalry.

Of course, women's tennis suffers from having had the greatest individual rivalry in the history of sports. Compared to Evert-Navratilova, nothing we have today comes close to a rivalry.

Sharapova is 5-6 combined against the Williams sisters. The matches are usually dramatic and two of them stick out as two of the best matches in recent years (AO '05 and WIM '05).

What's the problem?

Maria vs. Venus:

6-3, 6-4
6-4, 6-3 >>two okay matches
7-6, 6-1 >>only the first set is good
2-6, 6-2, 7-5 >>god-awful
6-1, 6-3 >>complete beatdown

Maria vs. Serena

6-4, 6-3 >>didn't see it, cant tell
6-1, 6-4 >>not competitive
4-6, 6-2, 6-4 >>awful ending to a fairly good match
2-6, 7-5, 8-6 >>Very high in drama, pretty good in quality
6-1, 6-2 :tape:
6-1, 6-1 :help:

Sharapova-Williams hasn't provided a good match in over two years.

I think Serena vs. Henin is a rivalry, we've had like 4 matches this year and I won't be surprised if we get another one before the season ends.

I think so too. You know it's going to be a good match whenever these two are up against each other, especially because they are both very competitive and don't like losing against each other.

Henin seems to be the only one with her eyes wide open. The rest of the field can't seem to catch up with her long enough to create a unique rivalry. That's what happens when you dominate the field.

The Venus/Serena/Henin triangle is a big rivalry although venus and serena are yet to play each other this year.

I can see a Vaidisova/Ivanovic and a Sharapova/Golovin rivalry in the future although the last pova/tati match was horrible.

Tati/Pova will never be a rivalry because even though Tati is talented, she will just not beat Sharapova enough to make it a rivalry (although I doubt she'll even get one win off her).

But I agree with the Ana/Nicole rivalry, I think it could be one.

I agree and that's why I lost interest for a few years. Case in point, even when my favorite Martina Hingis returned I wasn't that excited. Seeing her back was great but the tour itself? Not so much. I'm trying to get back into it but it's difficult when there aren't real rivalries or teen phenoms (mainstays of the WTA since its inception) to sustain my interest. It's as if things have neutralized and players are just good today, not great.
