She just completely outplayed her in every department, excellent performance. No shame for Serena to lose to the #2 player in the world who's playing like it as well. Serve too good, not making mistakes, Sveta is scary when she's like this and Serena couldn't raise her game. There was a point early in the first set where Serena did a serve and looked as if she wasn't expecting it to come back and ended up losing the point. She just couldn't raise her game to the required level. Well done Sveta... :yeah:

Oct 5th, 2007, 09:00 PM
I'm not surprised at all with this result, considering the way Kuznetsova played against Radwanska. I thought the standard of the 1st two sets in that match was the best tennis I have seen all year. Svetlana simply played to the same standard again today. Serena played good too, not as a good as Agnieszka played against Svetlana two days ago but still pretty good. For me this match confirmed just how amazing the Kuznetsova/Radwanska match Wednesday was. If Kuznetsova can keep it up, admittedly a big ask, she has every chance of getting another win against Henin in the final too.

WOW! what a win for Sveta! I knew she was playing well against Radwanska, but when was the last time she played two great matches back-to-back? Miami '06?

Very well done, and glad to see you're serving and volleying now and then. And if those returns were any indication, you've started to take a long hard look at your fitness, too.

Now of course comes the real test: can she play a third great match against a hot Tati, who has had some pretty nice results indoors the last few years? I think she knows what to do, now, but she's due for at least a set-long let-down. Hope she can make it to the final, Justine will be a nice challenge!

I think Serena is the same, maybe better, than Melbourne. Serena may have gotten complacent after her win in Melbourne and Miami. She fought, and won with a less than perfect game and form, and frankly she thought, as did many here, that she would continue to win whenever she wanted. But the game and opponents do change from time to time. She won't have a string of Petrovas, Peers, subpar Povas and JJs playing all the time.

provide quotes from the text to explain your reasoning! :D

"I made so many errors, my balls were just flying and there was no wind," Williams said. "There were hardly any rallies. It was hard to get any rhythm because I was making so many errors. I was just spraying balls all over."

Good Sveta was with us for most of the match today. Bad Sveta took over for 2 games in the middle of the first set, but then she thankfully left us alone.

Seriously, Kuznetsova played a fantastic match. The serve was always keeping her out of trouble when she got into it, the second serve returns were giving Serena yips, the groundies were huge and accurate and the variety was very nice too - some good net approaches in the match from her. One of the best tactically aggressive matches Sveta has played, for sure, against an opponent who is not easy to put away with this sort of a scoreline, no matter how she plays, because of her fight.

Serena, though, played a bad match, no question in my mind. It was not happening for her. Serving was poor, groundies had little control and she didn't much seem to care until midway through the second set. She tried to fight but she couldn't string it together for long enough to really make Sveta wobble and throw her a bone.

In my view, Serena is still carrying a bit of extra weight - I was watching her against Justine in Rome 2002 yesterday and that was her in great shape. She's definitely a little bigger right now - and slower. She seems half a step late on some of her shots and has to take big lumbering strides to reach some balls because she doesn't have time to move more naturally onto the ball.

I also think she's been searching unsuccessfully for her best tennis since she won Miami and it's clearly not back yet. She can dismiss lightweights easily enough but when someone with a bit more game comes at her, she can't seem to dominate them the way she once could.

Meanwhile, watching Sveta today - she had this walk going between points - an almost arrogant stride around - like she owned the place. I was happy to see it. She had the body language of someone who is world #2, believes she is, and she played like it. Her attitude in the match was near perfect. I hope she can keep that up.

I wasn't able to see the match or follow live scores. But judging on her appearance, I would say she's still not even in good shape. She still looks big to me and people are saying she wasn't moving very well or bending her knees into shots. She has NOT been practicing... I just feel like she isn't in tennis 100% right now.

I thought she has a bad knee. I think that is why she wasnt' bending maybe?

Exactly. Pathetic performance. She's not putting forth any effort to get better either. That's the worst part about it.

Congrats Svetlana. I would say that this beat down would wake Serena up, but 3 beat downs from Justine didn't do it, so why should a loss here.

Serena

i agree-sveta did play well but serena has been disappointing over the last few months. i know shes been injured but its almost like she just expects everything to click straight away and she'll beat the top players, it aint happening-she hasnt beat a decent player for a long time. with a little more effort, maybe the real serena will show up again

Serena has lost weight since the beginning of the year, but is playing more heavy footed than she was in Australia, Miami, and even Wimbledon. She hits a shot and goes flat footed and isn't anticipating. She can go practice forehands for hours on end, but until she drops some weight she is working against herself.

That's a little unfair, don't you think? It's not as if she lost to the world number 200. Kuznetsova is #2 in the world. It was hardly a given that Serena would steamroll her even at her best. Venus and Henin have both cited Kuznetsova as one of the most dangerous players on tour. Serena probably shouldn't have chosen a stacked field like Stuttgart to try and build some momentum. The quarters are too early for top 10 players to face each other outside Slams and Tier I's.

Hit more winners than UEs in the first set. Only thing wrong was 1st serve %age. Only started playing "awful" in the last few games of the match where frankly, she tanked it because she just could not get up to Sveta's level.

“I was very happy with my game today,” said 22-year-old Svetlana Kuznetsova. “Serena hit the ball very hard. It was fun out there. I’m loving my time here in Stuttgart and playing in this wonderful arena. It’s just great.”

“It was a crazy match,” said Serena Williams. “I made so many unforced errors today. The balls were flying all over the place. I don’t know what happened. It was strange. I found a little rhythm after some long rallies but then I just didn’t have the game to beat Svetlana.”

Serena needs bionic knees. She doesn't move like she used to, and she likely never will.

Serena isn't moving as well as she was in Miami this year atm. This has nothing to do with the knee injury imo. She moved like a gazelle in 2004, AO 2005. Her biggest problem is her groundstrokes. More so than ever before in her career, they've gone awol.

Renalicious
Oct 6th, 2007, 01:00 PM
Her main problem is her footwork. She's not taking those needed little steps to get in position, as a result, her groundstrokes are off.

Imo her problem is lack of confidence in her ground strokes, this has been getting progressively worse. She just doesn't have that faith to go for a shot and know it will be in. Footwork is a problem, but I've never known her groundstrokes be so awol. Even at the US Open in 2005, her movement was horrible, but her groundstrokes were more secure than they are now.

True that. If you watched the YEC 2004 - the first 4 games of the 3rd set. She just totally went for her shots and hit CRAZY winners! Her balls were so powerful, yet they were in. It seems now like she doesn't have that belief in herself, and maybe she thinks that if she gives power to the ball, it'll go out, so she goes for average-paced shots.

This is bad, because power was definitely one of the strongest points of Serena's game. Without it, she'll be a pretty average player.

Serena is most likely trying to substitute for lack of match play. When she played in Miami and even the AO she went for all her shots. I really think staying in Europe will be good for her game. That instinct will come back if she plays more but until then she'll get the same results.

Kuznetsova won what, 15 points in a row from the end of the 1st set through the start of the 2nd? And the way she changed pace was simply eye-opening.

Hope she can build off of this, even though she lost to Golovin.
