MOSCOW, Oct 5 (Reuters) - World number one Justine Henin has pulled out of next week's Kremlin Cup with a shoulder injury.
"We were told Henin had suffered some injury to her shoulder and although she is still playing this week, she would not play the following week as she wants to have some rest," Kremlin Cup executive director Alexander Katsnelson told Reuters on Friday.
The Belgian is competing at the Stuttgart Grand Prix this week. On Friday she beat Russian Elena Dementieva 6-4 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.
World number two Svetlana Kuznetsova has replaced Henin as top seed in Moscow.
Three former world number ones, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Marat Safin, have received wildcards for the combined men's and women's tournament starting on Monday.

Why do tennis stars have to lie? They always come up with some injury. Be honest and say I want to relax for a week and would rather play in Zurich.

On her website, It did not say she was going to play Moscow. It was, as of about 2 weeks ago, Stuttgart, Zurich and YEC.

because the wta forces them to play, and if they don't, they just say they are playing when they have never committed, and hides the commitment list.

If the wta stops lying, maybe the players will.

Will she still play tomorrow's semis against Jankovic though?

At least she will be more fresh for Zurich. :)

On her diary entry and on her website, more than a week ago, she said she would play Stuttgart, Zurich and YEC. It's obvious that the WTA was trying to hide it from those who don't go to Justine's official website.

this is so funny, as she will play against jelena tommorow, maybe win, and then play the finals in Stuttgart, and suddenly the injury will prevent her from playing in Moscow?? how far ahead can Justine see into the future. as someone said she should have jus said she wants some rest, and would rather play in Zurich...

Henin has been plagued with a sore shoulder since Toronto, so its no huge surprise that she wouldn't want to play consecutive weeks in a row. As someone else stated, she didn't list Moscow as a tournament she would play on her website, so this isn't a huge shock.

Obviously to pull out of a tournament without making the WTA unhappy, you have to come up with some sort of injury excuse, not just "oh bleh I hate Russian food." Or as Lindsay pointed out, the WTA just has them sign up to put butts in seats and then tells the player what excuse to use. It's standard.

Justine "Nostradamus" Hénin foresee a shoulder injury next week. That sounds credible. And people talk about Maria faking injuries. Oh well :o wtaworld logic at its peak!

The WTA is a joke, it's so ridiculous that they force players to enter tournaments, it turns more people off to the sport if you tell them someone's coming and then don't than if they don't ever enter in the first place. It's not like they don't have other stars like Sharapova and Serena anyway.

Hopefully, next time some other top players do this, Henin fans won't be so hypocritcal but I doubt it ;)

"Unfortunately , I couldn't go to Beijing because of asthma problems, but after a few days of rest, I gradually began to train in Monaco. I have less than a week left to practice for Stuttgart, and be in form. After that tournament I will play Zurich then Madrid for the WTA Championships.", from Justine Henin's diary entry on her offical website on 24/09/2007. ;)

Justine was not lying...
She was never gonna play in Moscow this year.
It was not even an option for her when they scheduled her 2007 repertoire...
It was the WTA who included the world number 1 in the commitment list...
Justine already had this nagging shoulder injury woes even before the USO...
Maybe they just assumed the injury as the reason but it didn't come from the Justine camp...
Spare us the controversy...

Justine has never entered the Mascow. The WTA automatically enters top players to certain Tire 1 events. Why Justine need to come up with injury execuse for an event she's never planned to play? It's "WTA's execuses"

I remember Davenport said last year or so that WTA enters players to events that they are not going to play, and then announce the withdrawl before the tournament start, making the players looking really bad.

I dunno - it might be a TPT (Tour Placement Tournament). Gold Exempt players 1-13 are subject to two TPTs each half of the year. They used to call them hard designated tournaments - only one a year. They forced Kim to play Toronto in 2005 - 4 tournaments in a row. She didn't want that but she was told to and did it and won. There are hefty fines for not playing a TPT.

an injury excuse in order to skip a tourney you weren't even playing, is probably not as bad as recalling this "shoulder" injury but only in the matches you lose
