View Full Version : Jankovic has a chance to be the year end No.1?

Does she have a chance?
If she really has one, it will be a huge joke for the ranking.
2 GS championships in a season won't be the year end no.1.

wouldnt be the first time... In 2003 Henin won 2 GS titles and Serena won 2. Yet Clijsters ended the year as #1. With that said. No Jankovic doesnt have a chance... isnt she like 2000 points behind?

Justine was YE Nr.1 in 2003 ... Clijsters just won the YEC ...

Yes, I checked the race ranking, only 680 points difference.
If Jankovic wins the Moscow (430 points) and Zuich (430 points), she still could be the No.1.
At least, could be the same level with Justine before the YEC.
Right?

The race rankings and entry rankings are different. Race points take all tournaments together, while ranking points only take the top 17 points. Jankovic would lose some points and therefore not be able to use all the points that she got from the 3000 tournaments that she played in this year.

The race counts all your points you earned for the year. The ranking only count your 17 best results.

@ LoveAndy: Jelena won't fly to Moscow. ;)

here's what confuses me about Jankovic's schedule: she played the US Open, then flew to Asia for two tournaments, then flew to Europe for one tournament, and then she's back in Asia for another. That's just bad scheduling. It's one thing to play four straight tournaments in roughly the same geographic region. It's another to fly thousands of miles to go between Stuttgart and Bangkok. I don't care that she plays 25+ tournaments a year; as long as she can do it she should. But that kind of traveling? not smart.

Hmmm... This happened to Venus in 2000 and 2001. Not an unusual occurence with the current ranking system.

Well, theoretically she does: For whatever reason Justine decides to retire real soon and asks to be taken off from the ranking list...

No, I donīt think so.
I like that crazy girl a lot, but letīs be realistic.
Justine is the real fully deserved number 1.
I think the position 3 is already very high for her. It will be tough for her to hold that position, when Sharapova, Ivanovic, Venus and Serena play their best tennis and the younger player like Chakvetadze, Szavay attack.
