It happens a lot. WTA has some weird, topsy-turvy matches. Specifically, my favorites like to give me a heart attack with scorelines like that.

Serena's match in Miami was great not just because the bagel, it was because the drama, saving 2 match points, the crowd, was the final, defff a match to remember.

Realistically its not as weird as it sounds. We all know about players tanking matches because they only agreed to play a given event to avoid a financial penalty for skipping an event or to collect an appearance fee. (Sampras once "presumably" :tape: did in Dubai, where he went from the airport to the arena, not the hotel, lost, picked up his check and went right back to the airport).

So call losing a set 6-2 or worse in a winning match a "mini-tank". That the player was conserving energy in a set she didn't think she could win, and maybe "measuring the lines" (and linesppl/ump) or whether certain shots were working against that opponent. Maybe the bagel is rare in that they don't want an unnecessary 0-6 on their record, though I doubt that "went 148 matches without suffering a bagel" is a stat anyone outside of here :o would follow.

How bout this one, Virginia Wade was leading Nerida Gregory 6-0, 5-0, 40-0 at the 81 Family Circle Cup and lost the match 6-0, 6-7, 2-6.

Mind you Virginia was long past her peak in 1981, but Gregory was hardly a known player but got put in the record books for that one match.

Imagine the field day that crappy journalists would have with that one.

Sabine Hack once played Mary Pierce in a tour final, causing Mary Carillo to jokingly refer to it as the "all-verb final". I have to admit, Hack versus Pierce does have a menacing ring to it. (And, yes, I'm aware that Hack in German is not pronounced as in the English verb.)

It happens all the time! (a player gets bagled and wins the match), especially in doubles.

Maybe she was taking something that puts one to sleep for a set. :tape:

Maybe she took something that left her without petrol in the 2nd set

Didn't see one of the most famous examples from the Open Era listed:

1983 Roland Garros R16
Kathleen Horvath d. Martina Navratilova (1) 6-4 0-6 6-3

Navratilova was the world #1, the top seed, and the defending champion. Her stunning loss to Horvath turned out to be the only defeat she would suffer all year, ending 1983 with an unmatched 86-1 win/loss record that stands to this day.
