Well what would Wtaworld be without drama? Same as tennis, where we all love the drama on the court and all that awesome stuff . So I just wanted to start this thread to hear what people have to say or post about handshakes which have turned out to be horrible.

One that comes to mind is obviously Patty's "handshake" with Hantuchova. Or her semi-slap semi-handshake in Berlin with Ana (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dN3cREkFbmw. Or her lack of handshake at 2004 Charleston against Martinez. Alright this is not a hating session either because frankly I love Patty and her feisty attitude.

So, do you know any other :help: handshakes? =P Please post your stories! (Can't wait to hear about Rodionova :haha:).

You can find a "non-handshake" between Smashnova and Golovin on YouTube that's pretty amusing. Listen to Tati on the last point....

The infamous handshake between conchita and patty at charleston in '04

Patty didn't like conchita's mannerisms.. such as always wanting the same ball that she won the previous point with.. Patty got sick of it and started hiding the balls in her skirt :haha:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/baxr6/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER-18.jpg

When conchita finally won the match.. Patty acted as if she was going to shake her hand, then pulled away at the last second and called her a "disgusting bitch." :haha:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v390/baxr6/DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER-20.jpg

Conchita then turned to the ump and asked if she heard what patty said to her.

YEC 2001, Lindsay vs Kim, Lindsay was so mad at a line call, instead of shaking the umpire's hand, she hit her (the umpire's) chair with her racket!!
patty/conchita still the mother all all kinds of weird.

The handshake between Serena and Henin at FO 2003 was very rude, Serena was really pissed.
The one between Maria and Davenport at 2005 YEC, Lindsay didnīt wait for Maria to celebrate and shook the umpire hands before and "forgot" to shake mariaīs hand, then Lindsay came back and did it, roughly!

If I were Serena, I'd have gone to net to shake Justine's hand and then pulled back and raised my hand like Justine did while Serena was serving. Then I'd have looked at the umpire and said, "did you see that?!?" Justine is such a troll. She deserved a smack upside the head after that match, not a handshake. I wouldn't have risked contracting herpes.

As far as the Golovin/Smashnova match, I thought the Golovin's scream on match point clearly bothered Smashnova. If I were the umpire I'd have called a let point and had them replay it. It came out of nowhere and had an effect on gameplay.

Charleston 2004 - after loss to Martinezi Patty Schnyder lost to Conchita Martinez 4-6 3-6

Q. Are you ready for your doubles match mentally now?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yes. No problem. I've got some time. I had good food and talked with my partner. Q. When two players get into a match and they're really passionate about their tennis, sometimes, you know, you can get into incidents out there where it spills over into psychological antics. Can you talk about some of that going on out there today?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. I mean she does it to everybody, and I don't think she needs it because she has a great game. She's a great player, and I don't understand why she's doing this. I mean I love competing and I love playing good rallies, giving a good show to the people, and just yeah, having fun. Like with all other players you can have really good tennis and sportsmanship, and with her it's nasty play, and I don't think it should be on the court.
Q. Do you think she went over the 25-second limit?
PATTY SCHNYDER: I don't like -- I mean she's showing no respect to the ball person. She's like walking around between first and second serve, letting everybody wait. I don't think it's the way you should behave, and especially she has such a great career. Why does she need it? And such a good game this week, and I don't understand why she's doing it.
Q. Patty, you've really played well here before and you've been popular before, but the fans reacted there at the end, and I wondered have you ever been booed before like that?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yes. Of course. I mean I live my emotions, and if they don't like it, that's okay with me. I mean I like their support, but I don't understand why they support a face like Martinez who is showing no respect to umpires, to ball kids. I don't understand the crowd up there, I mean if they are doing that, but it's their decision, and I know what I'm doing on the court and it's my decision.
Q. Patty, when you approached at the net, it looked like you were about to shake hands and then you pulled away. Did you decide at the last minute?
PATTY SCHNYDER: No. I just wanted to look at her. I just wanted to stare into her eyes what I wanted to say to her and so I have to have the hand before and then I took it away.
Q. And what was said? Was there anything said, any words exchanged at that point between you two?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. Of course. But that's between me and her and it's not for you guys.
Q. We probably wouldn't understand it anyways.
PATTY SCHNYDER: Why? It was not Spanish. It was English.
Q. Patty, have you ever not shaken somebody's hand after a match before?
PATTY SCHNYDER: I don't think so, no. You know, I can lose, but I like to lose in a fight and in a good spirit and that's all right.
Q. Patty, did all of that affect your play did you think?
PATTY SCHNYDER: I mean it was hard for me to like focus on the game, and I think I mean we are some great players and we play differently, and I think we could have had a better match and better rallies, but it was not the case, and at the end she won.
Q. Last night against Lindsay Davenport where she was pounding -- you guys were pounding away at each other and you would wear her down, and today it seemed the other way. You were generating all the force on the ball when it was and she was coming back with all her variety.
PATTY SCHNYDER: I mean I had some variety shots as well, but I mean she's in good shape, and it's very hard to beat her, so I tried my best, and it did not work out.
Q. So you believe she's doing that to get on your nerves?
PATTY SCHNYDER: She does it to everybody. If you talk to Petrova yesterday. I'm going to talk to her, but I'm sure she's not too pleased how she behaved in that match as well.
Q. The reason I asked and I don't mean to split hairs, but the reason I asked is when we asked her the same sort of question --
PATTY SCHNYDER: I did not understand.
Q. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to split hairs, but I'm saying when we asked her the same question, her reaction is I'm not trying to disrupt anybody else. That's my pattern.
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. What would you say in her place? Would you say I do it on purpose and I like to do it?
Q. You don't believe her; right? Bottom line is you don't believe her that she just does that because that's her rhythm.
PATTY SCHNYDER: No. I don't.
Q. Patty, you've got an obviously very strong year here and played well in Australia and good tournament here. Next week, of course, is Fed Cup, and my guess is you'll probably play this woman again.
PATTY SCHNYDER: That's true. Yeah.
Q. Does it provide any sort of extra motivation? Do you think it'll be more interesting?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Extra challenge I would say. Extra challenge, of course, and I mean some days I know that I'm playing good. I know that I can beat her. So we'll see what happens.
Q. Is there anything you can do to prepare yourself to play a game where it's slower and more articulate?
PATTY SCHNYDER: It looks slower, but it's really fast. The spin she gets on that ball is very hard to handle, so it's a different kind of game. I mean it's not really slow.
Q. I guess I'm talking about slow because of the dead time.
PATTY SCHNYDER: Okay.
Q. There's additional dead time in there.
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. I hope I have -- like probably I'll have a better umpire who will tell her something or I don't know, I mean with the crowd in Fed Cup, probably it's easier for me because everybody's cheering and you have to wait more anyways than in a normal tournament, so I don't know. I can tell you after the match.
Q. Do you feel like the umpire lost control of things, that he should have interceded?
PATTY SCHNYDER: He should be more -- I mean, how do you say that, dominant. I mean really -- yeah. I think he should like say something a little bit.
Q. There was a point in the second set when the match was close and it was getting out of your reach where you were forcing every point. It was either a winner or an unforced error. There was a string of six or seven points like that, most of which you were losing. Did you feel at that point that you were hitting hard or hitting drop shots all out of emotion or were you just so fired up at that point that that was the only thing you could do?
PATTY SCHNYDER: Yeah. I mean I was losing, so I tried something, and it's really hard to -- yeah, with her balls to hit good winners, and sometimes you just look stupid, I mean with her game. It's really hard. She makes you look stupid sometimes, so I really tried, and tried to change something, and yeah, it didn't work out.
Q. Did you try too many drop shots?
PATTY SCHNYDER: No. She's so far behind the back, so I think it's a good shot with her.
Q. She did say to us that she was open to talking to you. Do you feel the same --
PATTY SCHNYDER: No. I don't want to talk -- I mean I don't need to talk to her. I don't need to get along or speak what happened. I mean I don't need that. She can do whatever she wants. I don't need her.

The press always plays dirty, like that thing with Dementieva vs. Pierce in 2005 I think it was. But LOL at "you'll probably play this woman again" THIS WOMAN, seriously and when she comes to interview he would suck up like crazy, "Conchinita, what do you think of this woman's behaviour? She called you bitch didn't she, so what does this mean to woman's tennis, do you think this will make it loose fans?" (I would answer no and this thread suggests that we lOOOve it)

Good that Venus didn't react, if it would be Serena I can imagine an uproar, blood and parts of that hanger lying around.

Pay attention to the: "of course Kournikova the attractive annnnnd glaaamorous younng ruussiaan plaaaayer, who's been getting a lot of meeedia attttention ... i think you can call her a young russian millioner" LOL the girls are playing a match, we had "THE BUMP" and they turn to kournikova...

The Bovina/Schiavone is by far the worst handshake of all time (worst than Patty/Conchita!!!0

I saw it live and they were about to fight!!!
Both were annoyed by their opponent's loud grunts and during the handshake Schiavone was pissed because she lost.

Fran kept Elena's hand for a few seconds to talk to her and Elena had to hit Fran's hand with her racket to take her hand back....

Then they exchanged a few words!

That was fun

I remember someone telling me about Schiavone squeezing Bovina's hand in some European tournament. That would be awesome to see

I remember that.Seemed to me that Schiavone hit Bovinaīs hand with the racquet, but i didnīt understand why she did that, i didnīt see all the match but from what i saw it was everything ok. It was really fast, and Bovina didnīt react... maybe i didnīt see very well, but i think it was with the racquet and i never forgot that.

Thx, i always thought that was Schiavone who hit with the racquet, but i never knew really well what happened there... i wasnīt really looking at the tv when they went to shake hands but when i look again i saw that, and seemed that schiavone hit bovinaīs hand with the racquet and schiavone said something also. I see maybe the last set of the match, and with that end of the match the only reason i found for that was Bovinaīs grunts. I think Schiavone didnīt like that.

I don't need her.

although i know Patty's actions were very childish at the end i have to say when i read this interview i understand at least her motivation and think she's made some fairly good points about Martinez. She handled herself terribly.

And the Ivanovic handshake  i completely missed that episode of Patty Schnyder on how to behave like a petulant child as an adult.

What's her problem with Ivanovic or even Hantuchova?
Maybe the handshake after those matches (Berlin and Luxemburg) wasn't warm, but they were still really tough and tight matches, and it's really harsh to lose them (and she has so many of those this year.. which has'nt been great for her so far..). Women arent men! On men matches, they can give a hug and be nicer, but I never saw a women match which was tight and the handshake was warm.
ZAnd BTW there are bad umpires out there... and what will you say about Conchita being rude to the ball kids, and her thing, that she wanted to use the ball she won the last point with? that's pretty annoying.

And one last thing: Was this match high quality? And woh won the match at the fed-cup?

Patty used to have a long history with Kournikova, as well.

I remember one year at the Australian Open they played against each other in a doubles match, and Patty was quite clearly aiming the ball at Anna and at every opportunity she would try and hit Anna. I remember her partner at the time, Sonya Jeyaseelan, was smiling wryly, but also trying to encourage Patty to focus on the tennis rather than Anna's head. I think Anna/Zvereva ended up winning that match 6-2 6-1, and Patty gave Zvereva a friendly smile and handshake, and then didn't even look at Anna, barely touching her hand.

LOL! It's one of the things I always pay attention to especially if it was a really competitive match. Some (not a lot) of the handshakes are so cold that you'd think they thought their opponents had cooties or something. ;)

Oh please, it's supposed that players knows how to behave as adults. This kind of players who smile when they win, and act like this when they lose... it's so childlike... furthermore when you're a famous person.

Regarding to Conchita's behaviour, I agree that it's pretty annoying, but that's the life. If Conchita can't be penalized, you must hold on as a professional you're. Life is full of annoying things, but you can't go through life insulting people and doing these king of things.

So Patty's childish behavior is one of them, and there is nothing we can do about it..
She insulted Conchita, yeah, but she told her what she thought (She would do it on court or off-court, does it matter?) and it's not like she ran to press and told them what she said to her..

This is not the first time Smashnova behaved badly. Second round of wimbledon agains Marosi(then Aracama) she felt Aracama's then husband was coaching so she took a ball and tried to throw it at him, but hit an old lady instead. She was not ejected from the match and ended up winning and Aracama was not happy especially since she never won a round at a slam after that.

I was there, and she hit the ball in his direction but it hit a young French woman not an old lady. There was a long discussion at courtside with the tournament referee, loads of tears from Smashnova, but the woman who got hit came over and asked that the match continue, she didn't want it stopped because of her getting hit.

All who are critisizing Tati for her screams need to understand why she did it. It was match point and she thought Smashnova's ball landed out and she had won so she screamed, then on the next show (realizing she had gotten a bad call) she screamed once more to prove a point to the umpire. The inntention was not gamesmanship, but of course on wtaworld, it must be. :tape:

Smashnova was just being a "sore loser," really. Although the screams were a bit much.

That's loads of crap in 1 post. It was Smashnova who got the bad call earlier in that game. And not 1 wrong call was being made in favour of Smashnova the entire game. The screaming at the end by Golovin was to destruct Smashova and she know she can only do it on Match-point without being caught- now that's a true bitch.

Tati :hearts:  !
I loved it and I almost died when I saw it live particularly because Anna acted like a bitch the whole match and Tati didn't say anything.. :rolls:

First of all, it was a tiebrake, not a game. Second, if you watch the clip again you can clearly see Tati's backhand was on the line. Third, I already explained Tati's first scream was for joy as she though the match was hers and the second was because she was mad and thought she had already won. Fourth, Tati is by no means a bitch. She's in fact one of the nicest players on tour and you can see that by all of the friends she has and who they are. On the other hand, everyone knows about Smashnova. :tape: So happy she retired...

I interpreted it differently. I thought Tati was screaming louder bc well it was labored match point, in tons of matches when the intensity is up the grunting gets loud. I thought the screams got louder bc 1 she put a little extra on one of her shots, then the last grunt which was loud, was made because she thought she had made an error. I know when I hit a shot that I think is forsure an error , I make a scream like that, not intentional, just happens bc of the disappointment

Watch the clip, when does Tati ever show that she thinks she won the match mid point? She is still moving her feet and looks to be still "playing" the point.

You could always say maybe she thought she missed with both shots since both shots she hit landed near the line, but I think she made both screams right as she hit the ball. Im guessing it was intentional, but Im not completely sure.

Frankly, I don't remember anything bad from this match. I suppose they had a problem going on, or maybe just the way Fedak always says "Come on Come on Davai Davai!" after each point may have annoyed Kuzzy very much.... but really, that is a mystery for me! :wavey:

those screams are ridiculous from golovin! and then she wears skimpy tennis outfits like that one. if i was anna i would've got her in the locker room and taught her a thing or two about decency and sportsmanship. as for the kuznetsova one it looks as if svetlana just wanted to get off the court as quickly as possible. she showed little respect towards her opponent, although there wasn't really anything that happened; nothing like the golovin smashnova match. i still can't believe she got away with it!
