Here is mine based not on who my favourite player is, but players who in my opinion tournament directors, promoters, TV and fans are after

1. Serena --- undisputable leader

2. Maria --- even with the crappy season she is having, she is still a top 2

3. Venus --- def rose in the ranking after Wimbledon and great playing on hard courts

4. Justine --- #1, the most dominant player in 2007 with the most complete game but too robotic at times

5. Lindsay --- successful return, more to come?

6. Jelena --- when is her next meltdown?

7. Ana --- some great play this summer plus a cutie with the very short skirt

8. Martina H --- brand that doesn't need marketing

9. Amelie --- still enigma, in a way, even after winning GS titles

10. Nicole --- blonde, hard hitting, hot headed

-----------------------

It is, of course, subjective but, to repeat, not based on my preferences of any particular player.

Thoughts?

I agree for the most part except I think Ana and Martina have more star power than Jelena

I don't know. It was a tough choice, but Jelena with her on-court behaviour (some of which is cute) definitely has won a lot of points. She was on US TV even when she played a pretty boring match against Sybille.

sounds about right....i'd actually put ana over jh just because of prettiness (is that even a word? lol) and youth and her not being robotic

Hingis should be higher. No matter how badly she is playing, people want to see her. When she was on an outside court at the Australian Open in 2006, there was no way anyone else was getting in, it was absolutely packed. Ivanovic and Jankovic are equal quantities IMO.

Hantuchova deserves a place, perhaps tied with Mauresmo. Daniela often tops most popular player polls and wins hottest player awards too. According to tournament directors is very sought after.

I don't think Nicole is really known to the casual fan.

I think Ana should be ranked directly after Justine because she is quite well known and I think tournament directors promote her quite a lot .

Unforunately for the rest of the top 10, Justine's tennis is what drives her popularity. This is tennis, afterall (not who's prettier, etc. etc.). The way she made people gasp at some of the shots she produce at the Open confirms this.

Considering at least one-sixth of the world's population (India) thinks Sania is a superstar, then I'd definitely think she's on the list.

This doesn't apply to Serena or Venus? I'm pretty sure I heard audible gasps during their matches with Sharapova at the AO and Wimbledon this year.

Contrast their media exposure BEFORE their major wins, to their exposure afterwards.

Well, it is subjective because it depends entirely where you live. If you're in America the Williamses are way bigger stars than if you live in Britain, I'm sure Ivanovic & JJ are bigger stars in Serbia, it's all about nationality and is different everywhere.

Given I'm in Britain and we have no national biases towards players here's my thoughts on the star power in this country :

#1 : Sharapova
- It's not even close. She owns the tabloid interest in the sport over here, I live in Birmingham and she is the sole face of the tournament at the Priory Club. Played all her matches on show courts at Wimbledon this year.

#2/3 : Venus/Serena
- Venus because she always wins Wimbledon, Serena because she does talk shows like Jonathan Ross when she comes over. Neither drop below court 2 at Wimbledon.

#4/5 : Henin/Mauresmo
- Henin on talent, this may shock but for example my brother has very little interest in the sport and I was watching the Toronto final and he came round and he didn't have a clue who Henin was (she's been the opposite of media-savvy until this year). Mauresmo is very recognisable and has the game to suit grass, former Wimbledon champion so I'm sure Eastbourne would have a heart attack if she didn't come. Both played only 1 match off the show courts in the first 4 rounds of Wimbledon.

#6 : Jankovic
- Didn't go lower than court 2 in singles this year, add in the mixed doubles win watched by more people than saw the Ladies' final, the column inches about her and Murray, for now at least she's right up there but at the beginning of the tournament the top brass at SW19 preferred Sharapova vs a Thai doubles player for Centre Court over the #3 seed vs. a British player which they dumped to court 2. :help: Before the mixed run she was probably around Hingis.

#7 : Davenport
- Very recognisable still, former champion, if she gets back to top 10 she'd be above JJ but for *this* year right now the circumstances are exceptional and she's probably below her right now over here.

#8 : Hingis
- Still hot stuff after all these years, losing her star power though with disappointing results here as if she couldn't even get a show court at Wimbledon this year playing a British player whilst being ranked in the top 10... :help:

#9 : Hantuchova
- Took over from Kournikova & Schett as the one player the BBC was guaranteed to show multiple matches of in the first week of Wimbledon, gets fans to the smaller courts and has very vocal following. Gets given Court 2 against unseeded Likhovtseva (only Venus and Sharapova got better courts that day) and 13 against Srebotnik with only JJ, Henin and Serena getting better courts.

#10 : Ivanovic
- She packed out court 13 but didn't make centre court until the QF. Got court 13 behind Venus/Morigami on 2, Dani/Serena on 1 and Justine/Patty on Centre for her 3rd round match. Got court 2 v Petrova when JJ/Bartoli and Amelie/Nicole made the show courts for her 4th round match. She's only been news since the French Open over here but very much on the way up.

agreed, but they still would bring more people into the seats and more likely to be scheduled on a centre court than players not mentioned in my top 10 imo

Martina's star power is being highly wanted (among top 3 last year) by tournament directors even after 8 years of winning her last slam; has been no. 1 searched in yahoo and google many times :)

And who can forget the spice girls Martina and Anna together?

And of course she was the first female athlete to be on the cover of the American men's magazine GQ in June 1998 and one of five female tennis players named to the 2000 Forbes magazine Power 100 in Fame and Fortune list at No. 51. :)

So I guess she should at least be in the top 5 always :P

i honestly don't mean this in a mean way, but mauresmo is known by many non fans, just because she is pointed out as the manly looking one, even talk shows use her for their jokes, one about a male big brother contestant (with a slight resemblance) sneaking out of the house in order to win the womens singles at wimbledon :tape:

Williams sisters, Hingis and Sharapova are the most popular players around the world. I attended to US Open this year and it was almost impossible to get anywhere near the court where Hingis was playing. It was absolutely packed. Venus and Serena are not only tennis superstars, they are celebrities. Maria is not as popular as sponsors want us to believe or at least that was the case at US open. Henin is very popular too due to the fact that she is no.1 in the world and became even more popular after she beat the sisters back to back in New York. Kim was a fan favorite as well. Too bad she retired.
