Another loss of points I think. Although the field isn't that strong considering it's a Tier I. However it looks like Nicole will miss a seeding by one spot. :(

That's not bad. Although Shvedova can hit it pretty hard and might be specially motivated at home. I am a little bit torn about this tournament. I wish Nicole to do well, but on the other hand I wish Daniela would end this year as number 9. With the number of tournaments Nicole should play I see her as the only serious threat that could prevent Daniela from accomplishing that. So I don't know how much I should root for Nicole this time. :o

Vaidisova Opens With Win; Dementieva Survives Molik

MOSCOW, Russia - After a tough last few months, one of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's most talented young stars made a winning beginning at the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday as Nicole Vaidisova passed a tough opening round test in straight sets. Also among the winners was Russia's Elena Dementieva.

Vaidisova has had a tough go of things since making the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. She missed the entire lead-up to the US Open with a viral illness, then fell third round at the year's final Slam. A left hamstring injury kept her out of action in the weeks that followed.

Seeded No.8, Vaidisova certainly didn't disappoint in her first match of the week on Tuesday, battling past qualifier Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets, 76(3) 63. The two players held tightly to their service games throughout the opening set, trading breaks once midway through; but from 2-2 in the tie-break the Czech pulled away, winning five of six points to take the set, then four of the first five games of the second set to grasp control of the match.

"She's an up-and-coming player, and I really had to stay focused to get through that first set," Vaidisova said afterwards. "Once we got into the second set I felt a lot more confident out there, and I felt I finished strongly."

The Czech No.1 had a scintillating run to the semifinals here a year ago, winning a nail-biter over then-world No.1 Amélie Mauresmo along the way. Next up for Vaidisova is Elena Vesnina, who ousted qualifier Emmanuelle Gagliardi, 62 64.

"It was a good test for me today; I'll be playing another Russian next round, so obviously most of the crowd will be going for her again," Vaidisova declared. "I'll just need to stay concentrated and stick to my game plan."

Lunaris
Oct 12th, 2007, 04:18 PM
Nicole still have some problems with positioning and bending her knees, even when she is not under a big pressure and has relatively enough time to prepare her shot, which resulted into too many errors in key moments. Serena was overpowered by Nicole's flat shots in almost every longer rally and usually lost it, but when it was for example 15-30 on Serena's serve Nicole usually netted forehand or made another unforced error and Serena then was able to hit two or three good serves in a row. Especially in second set Nicole had some chances. I wouldn't say she choked that 5-3 lead though, Serena did what most players do after they're broken to rebreak. She was more agressive, made some rather risky shots, increased the pace and it paid off. In tiebreak Serena was very lucky, winning one point after netcord and another one after hitting a winner right on the baseline when both players were at the net. Serena's game these days looks to be only about her serve. When it's not working, like in second set, she's beatable. I liked how Nicole was exposing Serena's movement with good body serves. That was a smart tactic. She won many points after that and de facto eliminated one of the biggest Serena's strengths, which is return of second serves. Unfortunately it wasn't enough today.

Re: Nicole still have some problems with positioning and bending her knees, even when she is not under a big pressure and has relatively enough time to prepare her shot, which resulted into too many errors in key moments.

Sure, but Nicole yesterday was 10.000 times better on that regard than in any of her matches in Moscow last year, in which she sent every single BH ROS into the bottom of the net or into the doubles lane. It's a problem she'll always have because of her wide swings and very early takeback. One way to minimise these difficulties is to play from far behind the baseline like she did yesterday, to buy some more time to set up her shots. This on the other hand makes it easier for her opponents to open angles, but she scrambled surprisingly well and kept herself in the rallies better than I could have hoped.

Trouble is, Nicole's lower ranking means she now faces elite opponents earlier on the tournaments, and since she's not playing further than her seeding her ranking will stagnate at best. This season she has a total of 2 (two) wins over players ranked above her. That's just dismal whichever way you look at it.

Derek.

maybe it's just my opinion and it isn't true but I also followed her speed of serve in the match if I could see it and I saw some services over 190km/h and often over 180km/h.. I didn't see if Nicole changed her serve motion but I think she normally serves 160-175km/h like at USO... what do u think?

Where did you follow it? There were displays showing speed of serve on the court but all I managed to see was one 173 km/h serve. I don't think she served above 190 km/h, none appeared that fast. Of course I may be wrong but it really didn't look like that. 180 km/h could be possible though.

Yeah, I think I remember now there was one very fast serve called "let". It's important to hit the service box first. Sharapova's too hit some very fast serves recently but usually out. But we know serve is Nicole's most developed shot with a good deal of variety as well and she works very hard to improve it even more so it shouldn't be surprising to see fruits of her effort.

I tried to find it.. and I could see in second set when Nicole served she served from right side to the left and there was 19x km/h and Serena returned this first serve by forehand cross court which went so high and finished in out... I don't remember which game it was... but I hope I'm right and Nicole will serve better and better... I think she could have speed over 190 and over 180 permanently because her angles and variety is really excellent
