I was wondering how Maria would play in Korea after winning in India last week and then taking a long flight from India to Korea. I would think Masha would have been suffering from jet lag for her opening matcth in Korea. But atleast she won. Hopefully she improves her level of play for the rest of the tournament.

Seems like Masha had an attitude after the match and during this interview. She got to Korea on Monday and didn't play until late Wednesday afternoon, would seem to be enough time to rest. Maybe she was still jet lagged....

I was watching the livestreaming for a little bit,at one point she hit a winner and the crowd was silent then the next point she did a fault which got cheered then followed by a double fault which also got cheered, maybe she just didn't appreciate that. She also looked a bit tired during the match.

Also regarding the match she played okay but her opponent played well too much better then i was expecting. Next match Maria should be more settled.

Thanks, Ana! Even though Masha knew she was playing a Korean in Korea, must be hard to have the crowd against you. Especially so after the support she seemed to have received in India, and the love she gets from her many internet sites.

Kirilenko Blogs From Seoul

SEOUL, Korea - She burst into prominence by capturing the prestigious China Open title in Beijing in September 2005; and this past weekend, almost exactly two years later, she captured her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title at the Sunfeast Open in Kolkata. Now, one of the game's most talented young stars shoots for No.3 in the Korean capital of Seoul, as Maria Kirilenko competes at the Hansol Korea Open. The 20-year-old Russian also joins the list of Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Player Bloggers at the Tier IV stop.

It was pretty difficult, but I was able to win my first match today. I think I had a hard time adjusting to not playing under a roof like I did last week, and the girl I was playing - Kim So-Jung - played really well. She attacked with her forehand and was running really well, so I had to start hitting more to her backhand. I played better as the match went on and did well on the important points, and was able to win in straight sets. It was even tougher than the final in Kolkata! Luckily it wasn't so hot today - we played at 4pm so the Sun wasn't really beating down. There were clouds out too. It was different breathing because we were outside but that's about it.

I began my day at 11am with a practice session and because the day's first two matches were so long I had some time for a little nap in the player lounge :) My father didn't let me sleep too long though! After the match I felt dead so I had a massage, then talked to my boyfriend who is back in Russia for about an hour. And now I just had my dinner from room service, tomato with mozzarella, steak and mashed potatoes. Usually, I like to have fish at night, but I felt the need for some more energy for tomorrow. And I'd like to get to sleep pretty soon tonight so I won't have trouble waking up tomorrow!

There are a few things I like to do on the road to keep from getting bored, aside from talking to friends back home, which I obviously love. Here I brought some movies from Moscow, some Russian magazines and my Game Boy Advance. Outside Russia it's difficult to find Russian things, so I'm really happy I brought those magazines. And I know the Game Boy is really for kids, but when I'm alone I really enjoy it :) Back home I have lots of games but I only brought one on this trip, a Pirates of the Caribbean game. I think it's really fun and should be enough for three weeks of travelling. I bring my iPod with me everywhere but I haven't been listening to it much here.

Tomorrow I play Yuan Meng and again I've never seen her play. I've seen her around at tournaments. But tomorrow's match is another one where I'll have to figure her out on the court. I'll probably have a late breakfast then go to the club, because I have my practice court at 2pm. We'll probably go to the gym too...

I'll talk to you all tomorrow night after the match!

I wondered how Masha would do in Korea suffering from jet lag after flying from India to Korea and getting used to the different playing conditions. It seems like she played a sluggish match. But she won and that's the main thing.

Hello again everyone :)
So today when I came to the tournament for practice it was very windy outside, and eventually it started raining, so after the first two matches were done they moved the rest of the matches to indoor courts. I thought that was cool, because I played indoors all last week in Kolkata so I'm kind of used to it now. I don't mind this change at all. My match against Yuan Meng was still hard, although not as tough as yesterday's match. Unlike yesterday, Yuan's backhand was better than her forehand, so I played more to that side, and I won in straight sets.
Actually the first thing I did when I got to the courts today was an interview with GOM TV. The Tournament Director asked me if I would do it and I had lots of time so of course I said okay, and I was pretty excited because the guy who'd be interviewing me was apparently very famous in Korea. They asked me a few strange questions - like was I nervous, and how I felt about being compared to Sharapova. I'm so tired of that question! I don't know why people keep asking. I'm actually good friends with Maria. Whenever we're at the same tournaments we talk and even when we're at different tournaments we'll text each other. When she was at Fed Cup in Moscow she was keeping me in the loop, which was great. We first met when we were playing the juniors so I've known her quite a while.
Anyway, one of the other questions they asked me was if I'd try on a traditional Korean dress, and of course I said yes. I tried an Indian dress on in Kolkata for a photo shoot and it was so different and interesting, so I was very happy to do it for them here too. So they gave me a box, and I thought they'd be giving me the dress in there, but when I opened it there were two Korean dolls. It was really nice of them, but it wasn't what I was expecting, although they are really nice! I've attached a picture of the dolls...
Other than the TV interview and my outdoor practice session, I practiced indoors for about 20 minutes before my match. Afterwards I stretched, got a massage, and actually I just came back to the hotel 10 minutes ago. We've already ordered room service. I've asked for seafood salad and fish with rice. Not another steak today... I think the one yesterday was enough!
I'm playing Castaño in the quarterfinals tomorrow. I've never played her, but we have practiced together, so I do know a little bit about her. Her coach is always trying to be really cool - he's always speaking so loud so everyone can hear him, and so everyone knows he's there! It's really funny :)
Thanks for reading, and I'll talk to you all again tomorrow!

Hey everyone!
Another good day - I won my quarterfinal against Castaño today, actually it was probably my quickest match of the week. For the first time I felt I had a great start, going up 5-0. She won three games in a row there but I won all the games after that. In my other matches I wasn't starting so well, so I think I'm really starting to find my best tennis here. It's funny, like I talked about yesterday, her coach was being really loud, especially when she was winning those games. I have a lot of people cheering for me here so it makes sense he was being really loud! I really appreciate all the fan support here actually, it's just great :)
Still no dress... if you remember from yesterday, I thought they were giving me the dress in that box but it was the dolls. Maybe tomorrow? Anyway, speaking of dresses, it has been two years now I've been wearing Stella McCartney dresses, and I'm so proud to be doing it. I love them a lot. I've had nice comments from fans and other players too. Actually, I have a pretty funny story. Ana Ivanovic told me once she wanted a white dress and in the airport she saw a woman with one on, and when she came closer, she saw it was one of Stella McCartney's white dresses, like one you'd wear at Wimbledon! I see them in the stores and I am proud I'm the only player wearing them, too :) It's a great opportunity.
I caught some of the Szavay-Daniilidou match today as I'm playing the winner in the semifinals. It was an interesting match but unfortunately Szavay pulled out with her injury. So, I'm playing Daniilidou tomorrow. She won this tournament a year ago and so she must be comfortable here. She was playing really well. I am just going to prepare like I've prepared for all of my other matches. I haven't played her before so again I'll just have to play my best and figure things out on the court. This one may be my hardest yet so I'll probably try to be focused and keep to myself a little bit more tomorrow. Whenever I think I'm going to be having an easier match, I talk to everyone and just relax, but I think this one is going to be a little different...
Other than that it was a pretty normal day. I spent the time before my match at the club, then after my match a massage, shower, then watched their match, then came back here. We actually went out to eat tonight, to a buffet restaurant. It was really good, they had all kinds of meat, everything. Actually in the end, I got dessert, this marshmallow on a stick that you dip in chocolate. It was sooo good. I don't think it's Korean because I saw it in China too, so maybe it's an Asian dessert. I definitely don't keep myself from dessert - I'm lucky, because I don't get fat from eating them, so I'm not worried. I just eat it when I want. I don't eat it too much though, just because there aren't a lot of desserts I do like. I would have to say my favorite dessert is... tiramisu :)
I think I'm just going to check some e-mails and talk on the phone a little bit, then have another early night. Oh, and I've put a picture of me up again... one day was enough for the dolls!!
Talk to you all tomorrow,
Maria

great win against Eleni! After dropping a few set points in the 1st serving at 5-3, she held her nerve to win the first and then absolutely dominated the 2nd set.

She also had one of the best shots I've ever seen where she hit a winner on a running one-handed passing shot with her left hand (she had to switch hands to just reach the ball)! It was awesome.

Congrats Makiri on reaching your second consecutive finals! Now the true test comes in the form of Venus Williams. Not alot of people are expecting you to win this match ( except for me!) So, there's nothing to lose here. You're gonna be the underdog in this match, but who doesn't like to root for the underdog??? Hopefully you can win the crowd over and have their utmost support. Forget about your past results against Venus. This is the PRESENT. Don't be intimidated by her, she's just another opponent on the court that YOU CAN DEFEAT! "I thought she played fantastic," said Williams on Kirilenko. "I've never seen her play that well, and so aggressive, and not so many errors. I think that was really, really good on her part. She was just playing so well that the only choice I had was to try to play better than her."

Great effort from Maria, and I hope she is not too tired for the AIG

Maria should have found a way to beat Venus especially with Venus playing with a leg injury. But Makiri didn't find a way to win. :( Losing with a good showing isn't good enough for me and it shouldn't be good enough for Maria. Although it's a good sign that she's improved her play in the last couple of months.

Even though you lost the finals to Venus, I'm still proud of what you have accomplished here in Hansol. Everyone expected a 2 set sweep from Venus, but you were able to push her to 3 sets. I kinda agree with what you're saying Cat, but if you compare Makiri's current form compared to last year, you should be happy with her vast improvement in her game. Hiring Van Harpen was an obvious key in her success. Remember when everyone last year were clamoring for Makiri to hire a coach??? I know you have high expectations for Makiri and believe me she does as well. She still has to prove she can beat the top elite players. At least she's heading in the right direction to success. It kinda reminds me the run Chakvetadze had last year where she got to a couple of finals and won titles.
