She gets a bye and only one other seed in her quarter.

Anna back from the high of Fed Cup win. I think she needs to have a good tournament here in preparation for Kremlin Cup. She has a lot of points to defend there. Good thing she's on the easier part of the draw but of course it's still not a guarantee that she'll win but I will be surprised if she doesn't reach the final.

Gdog - Anna and Dani cannot meet in the final. Only in the semis. ;)

She has her Guangzhou points (120) to defend this week too. Her draw is the easier half but there's still plenty of tricky players in the mix.

Who doesn't read RR? Sorry if I seem a bit slow on this.. ;)

I still think it would be great if Anna has a thread at RR but if it's too difficult to change then I guess the status quo would have to stay. :)

Yes of course, almost forgot Anna's first title came at Guangzhou. :) She can gain those points by getting to the semis. I'm kinda worried about Marion, they have never played and she can give players with weak serves a difficult time. Anna moves the ball around very well though so that's her big advantage. :D

I saw Anna in the Frankfurt airport on Monday afternoon (yesterday). She probably was on her way to Luxemburg.

I was on the way home after a trip to Moscow, where I supported Russian men and women in the Fed Cup final and Davis Cup semifinal. I saw Anna on the court and in person very close to me during the final with Italians, but seeing her at the airport was a different story. We are used to seeing players in their uniforms, but not in casual clothes. Anna was wearing jeans and short jacket. She passed by next to me and looked very nice. :hearts: She was in a hurry, and her father was with the luggage 10-15 miters behind her. He looked tired. It probably takes a toll on him to travel around the world every week at his age. :worship:

Her serve is a liability. Too many double faults, getting into double figures. It's not just odd matches anymore, frequently Anna is serving 8+ double faulters per match which isn't good enough for top 10.

Her serve and her net play need work. This match is only a Tier II QF. It's not that important.
But Anna's game has to be more solid, because the indoor fields this fall will be tougher than Cincy Stanford and her half of the draw in NY.
She's going to be playing better players than Bartoli every tournament from now on.

When Anna broke back for 33, I thought she would win. Now come Justine, Serena, Jelena, Sveta, Ana.
Soon Maria and Venus.
These indoor draws are going to be stacked.

Well you can't win them all. I caught some bits of the final set. Marion's defensive shots were very good and as expected she put pressure on Anna's serve by standing in on the return. She seemed to get a lot of success pressing towards net also. I was interested to see that Anna actually had a very high winning percentage at net.

Anna hit more winners than errors and she hit a lot of winners. Marion actually hit more errors than winners but I guess a few important points decided this. Total points won: Marion - 110; Anna - 107.

With this loss Anna drops 50 ranking points and with Ana Ivanovic winning today she also drops back to #6 in the table.

We all agree on this. Her net play was actually very good in the Bartoli match going by the stats but yes, in general it needs work.

And I don't think these improvements can really start to happen until the off-season. Next year everyone will be looking to scalp her so she needs to come back even better than before and cement herself in the Top 5.

Bartoli looked awful today. I guess that long match wore her out.
Anna's not in the top 5 anymore. She had 3 weeks in there. She has to hold serve to stay there.
It's the same with Nadia. If you're broken 2 times in a row in the 3rd set, you aren't going to be in the top 5.

Hi all! Back from my weekend rest and sadly I had no internet access at home. Haven't been able to follow Anna's progress after her 2nd round win. But as it is, it looks I didn't miss much. My worry that Bartoli's return of serve will be difficult for Anna's weak serve has been proven true. Oh well the indoor season has just begun and Anna is playing consecutive weeks.

I wasn't really expecting Anna to play in Stuttgart with the Kremlin Cup coming right after it. I guess with the early loss in Luxembourg she didn't get the much needed warm up that she wanted. Stuttgart always had a tough field, Anna needs to be tougher mentally to get far.

Anna only played 2 matches in Luxembourg and her draw is very difficult in Stuttgart, so I don't think playing this week will hurt.
Moscow is Anna's first title defense, but the field will be much tougher this year. Might as well get a few points here.
