Elena Dementieva, Barbara Schett and Patty Schnyder all had great 2000, 1999 and 1998's respectively by reaching the top 10 and having solid results and at least having a very good grand slam and then the next year when great things were expected of them they dropped for various reasons.
Although Schnyder didn't finsh in the top 10 but at number 11 she still had a great year and was just pipped by Steffi's late charge at the end of the year.
But will there be a 2001 player, a player who did great last year and this year as failed to live up to it.
It could be Kim because she could drop because of injury and has many points left to defend for the rest of the year and is on 1399 point so far this year.
Dokic is on 1547 points so far this year. She could just remain in the top 10 but she is stubborn and won't change her gameplan and also her schedule, so I don't think she will get better results than last year and also the European indoor events will be a lot stronger than last year.
Justine is normally a favourite for this kind of thread and she has near enough guaranteed her top 10 position for the end of year by amassing 2318 points and she has a tier 1 title which is better than last year.
So will be there be a player this year to follow the pattern of previous years?

i htink Kim, but only because of the injury

anabel...I wouldnt really put Silvia in this category as she is 30 years old, and is pretty much playing at the same level as last year. She is really playing with no pressure at all, cos she is in her final years on tour.

anyway, my pick is Meghan Shaughnessy. Shes already on the slide.
Jul 15th, 2002, 03:14 PM
Of course Amelie :bounce:

Eggy, are you saying that Daniela and Anastasia will have great years this year and slide next year?
Jul 15th, 2002, 03:25 PM
ermmmm i hope not. I guess i didn't quite read the thread :o
always do that :o
Meghann Shaughnessy for 2001
Anna Smashnova for 2002

Comparing Demeniteva with Schett or Schnyder is not really fair. Dementieva maybe didn't improve since 2000, but it could be the case that she just didn't improve as much as her competition, while her rankings and results are still pretty solid, while Schnyder and Schett are nowhere near where they were few years ago neither gamewise nor in rankings..
Jul 15th, 2002, 03:56 PM
Shaugnessy is the only real candidate, but honestly, has anyone seen her improving even more than she did in 2001? I doubt so, with her game and physique she probably peaked, so there was not much of expectations, unlike in case of Dementieva or Schett.
Hantcuhova or Myskina could be the case, but for 2002, not 2001.

Kim? Only because of the injury, cause she still got pretty good results in the beginning of the year.
I agree with Meghann
Last year and at the beginning of this year, many people would have thought of Justine probably... But she proved them wrong already :D
Jul 15th, 2002, 04:08 PM
Kim can't belong to this list simply because she is a much bigger player so far than these three girls, simply incomparable scales. Besides it would be very surprising if Kim gets out of Top 10.
Jul 15th, 2002, 04:59 PM
defo Meghann shes already down to 20:eek:
Jul 15th, 2002, 05:42 PM
No, I don't think about Kim!!!
Look at her results at the beginning of the year!! Winner of Hambourg beating Venus Williams, semis at the Aussie Open!!
If she drops out the Top 10 it will be only because of her injury!!!

Well I think that Kim has had a pretty good year to start with - SF Oz and her big win in Hamburg.
My vote goes for Amelie - although she's won Dubai and SF Wimbledon this year, she's not really done much else. Last year she won 4 titles and reached the final of Rome.
It was always going to be a tough act to follow .

I thought you were saying surprise rising top 10 players:
i'd agree with Eggy, Dani and Nastya for sure.
I think Meghann will really fall. She had an awesome yr in 2001 and now her results are real crap
