If you would have asked me three months ago i would have said that Tamira will in it for sure.

But now i think that Agnes has a better chance to win it

2006 Ranking: Agnes - 207
Tamira - 181

2007 Ranking: Agnes - 23
Tamira - 39

2007 W/L-Record: Agnes: 49-13 (without Challengers 44-13)
Tamira: 30-14

GS Results: Agnes: AO - not played; FO - 2nd Round; Wimbledon - 2nd Round; US Open - QF
Tamira: AO - 2nd Round; FO - 2nd Round; Wimbledon - 4th Round; US Open - 4th Round

Tournament Titles: Agnes: 1 (Palermo 07)
Tamira: 1 (Portoroz 06)

These stats give preference to Agnes ... although i have to say that the GS Performance of Tamira is better (because she had very constant results) and Tamira is 2 years younger :p

Sure, we'll have to wait till the end of the season but what do you think?

Who will win the Award and who should win it?

I think agnes will win but I want Tamira to win.. but siriously, it's tough one... I think they both deserve this..
they both were consistent this summer but Tanira's achievements through the all year were better the Agnes

If Agnes finished this year in TOP20 (she not defend nothing from 2006), and Bartoli not stay in TOP15 (she is current #11, but must defend two tier-III titles from 2006) - Agnes Szavay have chances for MOST IMPROVED PLAYER award!!! In that case, Tamira will win easy Newcomer of the Year award (Azarenka is only other candidate, but Paszek have better year no doubt).

2007 is year of SZ big promotion - SZaway and paSZek!

Szavay is quite a lot better, IMO. Tamira is good though, but her year just simply doesn't have the highlights Szavay's does. Szavay doesn't even have the AO as a result. She'll be top 15 soon.

I'm not so sure Agnes Svazay counts as a newcomer. Prior to the start of this year Agnes had been in the main draw of 7 WTA tournaments. She even reached the semifinals of Modena way back in July 2005. I also have problems with the idea of selecting Tamira Paszek. The girl actually won a tournament last year, so I don't really consider her a newcomer this year.

Contrast this with Agnieszka Radwanska last year's newcomer of the year winner. Radwanska played her 1st WTA tournament main draw in May 2006. Paszek played her 1st WTA main draw in October 2005 and Szavay played her 1st WTA main draw way back in February 2005. How ridiculous would it be if this year's newcomer of the year made their debut on the tour before last year's newcomer of the year?

Come on guys, Paszek and Szavay are definately both strong contenders for most improved player but if either of them get the newcomer award something is very wrong.

Infact, unlike Aga last year, there is not a single player in the top 100 right now who has not played at least one main draw WTA event prior to the start of the year.

With that in mind I would say Olga Govortsova and Raluca-Iaona Olaru are probably most deserving of the award. Neither player was in the top 250 at the end of last year and neither player had yet won a match on the WTA main tour. They are I believe the only two players in the top 100 with those distinctions. In addition both players are now in the top 75 and I'm pretty sure both will finish in the top 60 if not higher. Indeed Olga is already ranked 60 and Raluca is not too far behind her at 71. I would say who most deserves it between these two will depend on who does better over the last couple of months of the year but in my mind the award has to go to Olga or Raluca.

Well that last post of mine seems to have put an end to the Paszek vs Szavay for newcomer of the year discussion.

If they do vote the newcomers that way, Raluca should get it. Or maybe Sorana if she climbs a bit more ranking spots. Do they do base this decision on only ranking jump?

I think its got to be Agnes.. Tamira has been around for a while now and therefore her rise whilst been great hasnt been a huge suprise where as Anges has come from no where..

Szavay Most Improved; Paszek Newcomer. Radwanska won Newcomer last year right?

Yup Aga won it last year as a bone fide newcomer having played only one qualifying event on the WTA tour previous to 2006. And she lost that in the 1st round. She didn't actually play her 1st WTA main draw match until May 2006 so she was a genuine newcomer last year.

I hope the same can be said about the 2007 winner.

Szavay will win it easily. If not, that's just because she'll get the MOST IMPROVED PLAYER award...

I don't think that's how they count it, though. Isn't it something like the highest ranked player who had never been in the top 100 before? I think that's the way it works at least.

Spirlea won it in '94 when she'd been in semi's of tournaments and Hantuchova won it in '01 when she'd been to the quarters of Tier III's a year and a half earlier, so I don't think it necessarily means newcomer to the tour, I think it's newcomer to the top 100...

Maybe there's an age thing involved too? But Spirlea was 20 when she won it, so maybe not.
