I was watching the special on CNN last night on Venus and Serena and thouhg I have seen them as youngsters many time playing tennis, this time something hit me. During practice I noticed that Serena was grunting as loudly as she does on the courts. based on what some of you posters think, was she trying to intimidate Venus in practice? You all claim that her grunt in competition is fake and is meant to intimidate. Why would she grunt in practice?

I remember when I first read about Venus and Serena around 10 years ago, I heard their practisematches were tough battles and that must have been because they were competive soon after they serious became pro so they must have had some good practise.
so I guess even in practise they give it their all and when serena does that, it goes with a lot of noise;)
I don't think it is fake at all, what a crap:(

Yes, Irma. Rick Macci said in the interview that early on, their practice matches against each other were dog fights. Richard hated it because he did not want them to go at each other that way. He then had them play the top boys at Macci Academy. Serena was so intense as a kid that the grunts were really loud...

Kart, that is my point. They say that her grunting is fake, it is meant to intimidate the person she is playing. So I said if she grunts in practice why would it be fake if she grunts in competition? :wavey:

You didn't actually think anyone BELIEVED that 'grunting as intimidation' line did you?

Yeah, Serena must have been practising the loudness of her grunt... if it doesn't work perfectly, she can't win her matches. It is definitely the most important aspect of her game.
