Obama Demands Fairness in Jena 6 Case

Senator Barack Obama made the following statement today in response to the Jena 6 case.

"When nooses are being hung in high schools in the 21st century, itís a tragedy. It shows that we still have a lot of work to do as a nation to heal our racial tensions. This isnít just Jenaís problem; itís Americaís problem."

"There are a number of signs that the system is not working in this case. Itís a problem when criminal charges are brought against some students for fighting, but not others. Itís a problem when a public defender doesnít call any witnesses. And itís a problem when a prosecutor decides to try teenagers as adults for a school fight, a charge that could leave them in jail for the majority of their lives. That is why I join my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus in calling on the judge to consider all the relevant factors and calling on the District Attorney to drop the excessive charges brought in this case. And I, along with other members of the CBC, will continue to monitor this case closely."

"Going forward, we have to fix our criminal justice system. Whether itís Jena 6 or Genarlow Wilson, itís long past time for us to admit that we have more work to do to ensure that our criminal justice system is fair. We must ensure that both victims and defendants can receive equal justice under the law, regardless of race, wealth, or other circumstances."

i thought Bell was the one already convicted:confused:

i'm just listening to the michael baisden show and i believe they said all adult charges were dropped. but they are still charging him as a juvenile.

i think the others are still in doo doo. bell is actually still in doo doo since they could easily try to give him lots of time as a juvenile.

bell is being released though.

JENA, La. (AP) -- A state appeals court on Friday threw out the only remaining conviction against a black teenager accused in the beating of a white schoolmate that raised racial tensions in his town.

Mychal Bell, 17, should not have been tried as an adult, the court said in tossing his conviction on aggravated battery, for which he was to have been sentenced Thursday. His conspiracy conviction was already thrown out by another court.

Bell, who was 16 at the time of the beating, and four others were originally charged with attempted second-degree murder. Those charges brought widespread criticism that blacks were being treated more harshly than whites following racial altercations involving Jena High.

Mychal Bell is still in prison waiting to see what the DA will do next. Hopefully, as a juvenile he'll be able to get out with time served.

I can't go to Jena on the 20th but will be wearing my black in support.

thats because you are stupid.

anyway, glad to see those adult charges get tossed out. they should never have been tried as adults for a school yard fight.
