Lindsay is just so much talented that her strokes will never leave her even in long layoffs.

Lindsay showed a lot of mental strength at *3-2 in a long game with several break and game points in which she produced and ace at deuce... I was VERY excited when she held and then she did well to break Jelena after Jelena was up 40-15 and then she served it out to love.

she was playing crap, no point in defending her. it's sad how you all turn defensive when someone points out the truth.

I'm not defending her, just pointing out the huge gaping holes in your logic. You cannot determine the quality of a player and where they deserve to be in the rankings based on one match, hence my point about Aga.

Anyway, congrats to Lindsay. She may be coming back after a while off, but she's a GS winner with 50+ titles to her name.

Lindsay won because of her talent.

She has proven everytime she came from a long lay-off that she can compete right away at the top.
Her groundstrokes never leaves her. Maybe her serve will fluctuate but her ball striking ability is just so natural to her and only needs few training cuz it does'nt require too much effort.

As for JJ, no worries, your still the 3rd best player in the world.

This confirms my impression that if Davenport, Mauresmo, Capriati and Kim would be back on the tour, Jankovic and Ivanovic would not be ranked where they are ranked now.
I've watched a lot of matches of this the US Open, and for me the best players were Venus, Serena and Henin. The upcoming youngsters are good but I haven't for example seen anyone of Kim's caliber.
Davenport's return is a blessing for the tour.

Incredible result. I think a lot of top players now will be really concerned about Davenport's comeback, if they weren't already. There are so many players now ranked in the top 10, 20 who have had so much trouble with Lindsay's style of play over the years and were probably thankful to see her go. But she's back and means business! I love it. This is the year of the Mums, no doubt. :yeah:

and what is this suppose to mean? jelena has had one of the hardest schedules playing week after week, and is just plain tired. this loss means absolutley nothing, and it's sad of you to say something like this, after all the wins jelena has had this year. good for lindsay to beat jelena, but this means nothing in terms of jelena's quality as a player!

I didn't train much and it's tough to get motivated here. But it's OK, now I can finally go to the beach

Jankovic became involved in a number of disputes with Sri Lankan umpire Asitha Attygala, especially late in the third set, and she refused to shake hands with the official at the end.
"It was a nightmare being out there," she said. "I'm coming from the US Open and we are used to challenges (Hawk-eye line-calling) at the big matches.
"The umpiring was just terrible. When the ball was in, he called it out, when it was out, he called it in."

Davenport said: "When your opponent self-destructs, that's good from your perspective. I just worried about my own game.
"In professional tennis you have to deal with line calls. When she blew up I knew I had a great shot at winning."

Sep 14th, 2007, 02:00 PM
Both are great players!

The reason JJ lost was she needed rest after long season. Other reason is she seems not 100% at all ready for this tourney after US Open, as mentally she was exhausted too and hadnt been practising or focusing much on tennis last couple of days. She was too busy with outside court activity. I wasnt surprised at all with the result as JJ wasnt at her best condition bust she managed well to just hanging there but not good enough to beat LD.

The reason LD won was she was the fresher of two and she knew that JJ wasnt at her best so LD used her experiences just to play her game and hanging there to beat shaky, self-destructed, emotional JJ. Seems JJ letted her emotionally down at the end of the match... =(

JJ, go back home and take rest now, ready for other tier 2 or 1 tourney in next couple weeks. Just take rest, and focus back to your goal as it near the year ending.

LD, keep up ur confidence! I believe your experience will bring you to beat players in main draws. As long you believe with your game play, you can take this title home with ya!

Anyone agree with me???

Someone was mentioning Jelena's h2h against top players earlier and I think Jelena's head is the main reason for that awful record. Most of those matches were 3 setters, but somehow Jelena manages to get upset with something and just "blew" it in the end as LD said. When she gets a good coach that starts working with her on her attitude and her mental state I think she can be a real threat to everyone.

Not to take anything from LD - what an amazing feat to play 3 months after giving a birth and winning at this level!

I must admit I was concerned for Jelena and her prospects this match. But as far as Lindsay is concerned - it will be interesting to see how she does now.

Now for this totally meaninless and irrelevant post on Jelena:

Jankovic vs
Henin 0-7
Clijsters 0-6
Davenport 0-4
Myskina 0-3
Mauresmo 1-5
Sharapova 1-3
total: 2-28

And some were whining about Kuznetsova being No.2...

So WTF is your point. Apart from this match against Lindsay - Jelena was ranked below these players when they played and no way was she expected to win when she played these matches. And even in this match - no-one knew what Lindsay would be like after her 1 year break - but that's not that long really. And we all know that she was a top player with 50+ titles and God knows how may weeks at #1.

What is interesting is when JJ got those wins against Maria and MoMo. They are this year. She's made a start to try to turn it aroung against some of these players that haven't retired - even though she was still ranked below them when she won against them.

No. That stat he gave still matters. The truly good players always beat the top players on their arrival. Serena beat several top 10 players as soon as she got on tour, so did Venus, etc. That is how you separated the great from the good.

Well you are allowed to post - but it's pretty meaningless and off topic. I think it would be a better idea if you created a separate thread on Svetlana and Jelena's ranking and Jelena's losses against players she was ranked below - most of them over a year ago - and not expected to win anyway.

This thread should be about congratz to Lindsay and commiserations to Jelena - and issues in the match.

 Amazing that Lindsay is straight back in title contention at her first singles tournament. Could this be a better comeback than Hingis? Looks that way.

Lindsay is amazing! This doesn't mean the standard in women's tennis is dropping. We are witnessing the comeback of one of the all-time greats. It's not Jankovic's faults, just Lindsay's great play.

Boo Jelena, boooooooooo!
Tennis is SICK. I mean, Lindsay is great, we all know it! It's a great win for her obviously but franckly! JJ is ranked 3rd!
Once again, tennis's losing credibility.

What just like when Maria lost to Rawandska at the USO?!!! :tape:

Give Jelena a break...its no shame losing to Lindsay, if she lost to a player ranked outside the top 100 without 50 titles, 3 grandslams and $21m+ in prize money and a winning H2H against Venus, then you should be worried!

Amazing stuff from Davenport. Hope she kicks Hantuchova's ass in the final.

WOW. I have to say I am unbelievably but pleasantly surprised. I didn't think Davenport had a chance in hell at winning this match. Jankovic go take a week off or something.

This is one of the most shocking results of the year, for me at least.

Congrats, Lindsay!

And some (read: JJ's fans) were whining a lot about Kuznetsova being No.2.
I've read dozens posts of Sveta's "undeserved" rank. Why am I not allowed to post the same about Jankovic?

If you had posted just that, that would've been fine. Instead, for at least the 2nd time, you've posted skewed stats to try and "prove" your point about JJ. How did you choose this list of players for these stats? Because she has abysmal records against all of them? What does that prove exactly?

You'll say it's because they're all grand slam champions. If that's the case, you have to use ALL of JJ's stats as such. You left out Kuznetsova, Hingis, Pierce, S. Williams, and V. Williams...in other words, the gs champs JJ has positive or even records with. It would've still been an effective argument, but you just wanted to make it look worse to suit your purposes. I could make a similar list only using a few players for Sveta and it would look just as bad.
