JON STEWART, the popular late-night political satirist, will bring his smirking charm to the Oscars once again as host of the 80th Annual Academy Awards -- a decision that has some in Hollywood scratching their heads.

Stewart's statement, included in the Wednesday morning release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, was typically self-deprecating.

"I'm thrilled to be asked to host the Academy Awards for the second time," he said, "because, as they say, the third time's a charm."

The Oscars will air live on ABC from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on Feb. 24.

The award show's ratings dropped 8% the last time Stewart hosted in 2006, and his sarcastic sensibility that often lampooned Hollywood's self-reverence didn't play so well with the all-star crowd.

The Oscars need ratings to remain relevant. That's the primary concern. It's not about whether his jokes are intellectual or not. It's about who can bring in the ratings.

I don't even know they have a host anyways. All the stars just sit there with collagen lips poked out looking at the host half crazy. I would never advise anyone to host the Oscars, just a bunch of elitist snobs waiting for the comedian to bomb.

2008 is election year. It seems to make sense that they'd ask him back. I thought he did okay last time but wasn't amazing. In fact I thought he played it kinda safe.

Best recent host for me was Steve Martin in 2003. It was when the US had just gone into Iraq so he had to tread a fine line and he aimed most of his jokes at the celebs:

"Halle Berry is here, whose win last year broke down barriers for unbelievably hot women."

"Roman Polanski is here - get him."

"It was so sweet backstage. The Teamsters are helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his limo"

I wish they would get Whoopi back. In my opinion, she's been the best Oscar host I've seen.

Dude the Oscars are irrelevant now just like most awards. Some peeps still love movies but the internet has taken away a lot of the interest. Besides who even has the attention span to sit through a film anymore? Maybe theaters should install computers? LOL
