Its far worse in New Zealand

On my 16th birthday I went into a clinic to give blood, I was refused. A tear rolled down my cheek as I left the clinic (thankfully my bf was with me)

If you've had anal, even if its using a condom and lube (and even with someone in the AIDS foundation) you cant give blood for 10 years after that occurance. Also if you've either recieved or given Oral then you cant for 5 years. There is some lobby groups out to extend this to 20 and 10 years as well - Its strange how in some ways New Zealand is the most accepting of gays, but it others the discriminate against them so much

On my 17th birthday I went alone to the clinic and walked did, filled in the form as usual that reception gives us, filled it in, handed it back, waited to see the reaction on the receptionists face when she started reading it (I also listed a number of STDs, including some that men cant actually get), then I walked out of the clinic with my head held high :)

What I don't get is that my anatomy teacher joked that I'm can be "a dangerous vampire for Halloween", because my blood type doesn't work with 97% of humans.
But from what I've read I can be the universal donor of plasma? So for blood and plasma, it's like the other way around? All websites say that AB+ people should be plasma donors, because it's so rare.
Also not sure about donating.. I'm a healthy student (who needs money of course), but I work physically and play tennis every day without any days off  Should I be the plasma donor still?

^ I think 85% of people are positive and only 15% negative. At least that's what I think it is in Ireland. I've heard that blood types vary by country/region but I don't know if it's the same for rhesus.

I'm B+

I only know because I donated blood. It took my 3 attempts to do it. The first too times I couldn't fill the bag in the allotted time so my blood could only be used for testing. After I successfully donated I never donated again because the Irish Blood Transfusion Board doesn't allow any male who has ever had gay sex to donate blood!

Well, that's the thing! I guess a guy could go in dressed in a rainbow flag but if he fills in the form and answers all the questions 'no' (there's a little interview in a private alcove!) then they can't or won't stop you...although you never know. They admit that their policy is homophobic but won't change it. I think there was some scandal in the 90s (or possibly earlier but it only broke in the 90s) where people were infected after being given transfusions.

In terms of plasma donation, you should only receive plasma which does not contain an antibody which could attack your own red blood cells. So for example, you're AB which means you are a universal plasma donor but can only receive plasma from someone else from the AB group. Your blood does not contain either Anti-A or Anti-B antibodies. Therefore you can donate plasma to anyone because your plasma does not have antibodies that will react with any blood type.

In blood donation however it's the complete opposite though. AB is a universal recipient (can receive blood from all blood types because it has no antibodies) but can only donate blood to people who are AB as well. This is because the presence of either the anti-A (Group B) or anti-B (Group A) antibodies or both simultaneously (Group O) will react with Group AB blood (because AB has both A and B antigens on it's red blood cells) and the blood will coagulate.

A little complicated to understand but I hope that helped

Povin
Oct 4th, 2013, 07:17 PM
Thank you! :worship: Great explanation! I didn't know it's the opposite way for plasma. I definitely should donate it then since mine is rare, maybe I should ease up my "physical" schedule thought to help it recover
