Sam out till most likely end of the year...

After a series of unfortunate mishaps in the last couple of months, Samantha again finds herself unable to compete in this week's China Open in Beijing. After a tough week's training in New York, Sam was again struck down by illness. After flying home to Florida, she found herself in hospital and has been diagnosed with Viral Meningitis. She remains in hospital for now while she recovers.
Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges (the soft tissue membranes which cover the brain and spinal cord underneath the skull and spinal column)
Most cases of viral meningitis are usually mild and most people make an excellent recovery. About 10 days is the expected recovery time.

Unfortunately for Sam, she will now have to withdraw from Beijing, Seoul and Japan while she regains her strength. She is still hoping to compete in the last few events of the year, hopefully including the Madrid Championships.

My brother had meningitis earlier this year and it was quite serious, he was in intensive care for a few days and in hospital for several weeks. He then couldn't do any sport for 12 weeks once he left :eek:

What an awful season for Sam, I really feel sorry for Sam, at a time of the year where she really needed to step up her game she has to pull out with a virus. Hope she can get better soon.
