For all you statisticians out there! Just noticed that Alona Bondarenko (currently ranked no. 21) is playing the $100,000 event in Kharkov, UKR. Has anyone else been ranked so high at the time they were playing a challenger?

Nathalie Tauziat played $ 50,000 Val d'Ois challenger tournament in 1991 and she was ranked 13th.
She also played there next year, when she was ranked 14th.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld was ranked 19th, when she played $ 75,000 tournament in Ortisei 2006.

Muller often plays challengers instead of tour events when she is ranked in the Top40.

Nicole Arendt (top ten doubles player at the time) won Tier I Rome in the mid-90's and the following week played a $10.000$ challenger in France right before the French Open :haha:

Hmmm, Dechy was #13 you say? I wonder what the chances of #3 playing a challenger are...

Wow those are some crazy stats.... and I'm sitting here thinking Yvonne Meusburger should not have played Bronx. I see now that there has been worse cases.

If there's no tournament that week I can definitely see Jankovic taking her overplayed ass to a challenger.

Pretty good, I'd say, especially if there are no WTA tournaments that week :haha:

frenchy the marion hater forgot to mention that she absolutely dominated her way to the dubai title, but whatever. as this thread goes to show, plenty of players ranked above marion's 40 at the time have played itf tournaments, and not all of them have won.

Chanda Rubin won Salzburg-2 in 1996 while being ranked No.12 in the world. She defeated then-No.185 Shaughnessy in the first round, then-No.161 Vento in the semis and unranked Lucic in the final.

$100K's are essentially like the old Tier V tournaments that were phased out of the WTA a few years back, so I don't think it's that bad that Alona and her sis are there. It's a great coup for the event to have it's two best players in action.

and some of the challengers in Europe do have a much better field than many asian WTA events
